1. Ida Carolyn CLAYTON (pictured above--portraits courtesy of Ann Fortson Marcy), first of the eight children of Joseph Alvey CLAYTON and Margaret Amanda POOLE, was born on 24 May 1848 in Washington County, Texas.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 She married James Thomas FORTSON, son of Benjamin Joseph FORTSON and Elizabeth Ann Titus HOLLIDAY, on 20 Jun 1867 in Navarro County, Texas.8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 She died on 30 Aug 1910 in Rice, Navarro County, Texas, at age 62.16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 She was buried in Old Cemetery, Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas.24,25,26,27 She attended Independence Academy (predecessor to Baylor University), at Independence, Texas, and was far-sighted and accomplished in business. Although she was a Methodist (there is no record of her husband's church affiliation), a Baptist elder, Josiah Leake, performed their marriage.28,29

James Thomas FORTSON (pictured above--portraits courtesy of Ann Fortson Marcy) was born on 27 Sep 1840 in Monroe County, Mississippi (near Aberdeen).30,31,32,33,34,35 He died on 11 Jan 1892 in Rice, Navarro County, Texas, at age 51.36,37,38 He was buried in Old Cemetery, Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas.39,40,41 He arrived in the Chatfield area in 1848 and attended the Chatfield public school. He served in the Confederate army, entering in 1861, and was wounded three times; one bullet hit his arm, and another passed through his body, entering near his spine and exiting through his chest. He was a farmer and stockman. He and Ida lived in Chatfield for a number of years and then moved to near Rice. After he died she moved the family into Rice.42,43

died on 1 Aug 1938 in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, at age 68.54,55,56,57,58 He was buried in Oakwood
Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.59,60 He was named for his uncle, John FORTSON, who died in 1868. He was about six feet tall and at age 62 weighed about
215 lbs. He and his brother, Joe, owned considerable farm land in Navarro County. In Rice
they also operated a cotton gin and owned interests in the First State Bank and a

2. Martha Eugenia ('Mattie') FORTSON (Ida CLAYTON) was born on 4 May 1868 in Navarro County, Texas.95,96,97,98,99 She married J. Curtis GLENN on 15 Nov 1891 in Navarro County, Texas.100,101,102,103 She died on 20 Sep 1893 at age 25.104 She was buried in Old Cemetery, Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas.105 She was known as Mattie and Big Sister. She was said to have died in childbirth, but cemetery records indicate that the child lived about four months and that she died about ten days after the child died.106,107

4. Joseph
Benjamin FORTSON (Ida CLAYTON) (pictured
at left--portrait courtesy of Ann Fortson Marcy) was born on 31 Mar 1872 in Navarro County, Texas.111,112 He married Lyda MCGEE, daughter of John
Abraham MCGEE M.D. and Laura Paralee SESSIONS, on 22 Jun 1904 in Rice,
Navarro County, Texas.113,114,115,116,117,118 He died on 22 Nov 1950 in Corsicana,
Navarro County, Texas, at age 78.119,120,121,122 He was buried in Oakwood
Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.123,124 He and his brother, John, owned
considerable farm land in Navarro County. In Rice they also operated a cotton gin and
owned interests in the First State Bank and a mercantile business, and Joe was president
of the school board when the 1912 schoolhouse was built. He and his family moved to
Corsicana in 1923. He was a director of Corsicana National Bank and the bank into which it
merged in 1931, the First National Bank of Corsicana, and from 1920 to 1927 he was
president of Corsicana National. He also had interests in ice plants in Corsicana and
Palestine, Tex., the Navarro Hotel in Corsicana, General American Finance Co. in
Corsicana, and a mercantile business in Rice. He was a director of the Trinity Improvement
Association. They lived in a large, three-story house at 220 N. 14th St. in Corsicana.
They were active in the Methodist churches in Rice and Corsicana and established a
scholarship in the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist Univ. He died after a
short illness following a heart attack. He was about the same weight and complexion as his

Lyda MCGEE (pictured at right--portrait courtesy of Ann Fortson Marcy) was born on 22 Dec 1880 in Rice, Navarro County, Texas.129,130,131,132,133 She died on 13 Dec 1967 in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, at age 86.134,135,136,137 She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.138 She graduated from Kidd-Key College in Sherman, Texas in 1901. Her Sessions ancestors were Scots who came to America in 1630. One of the immigrants, John, was provisional governor of Connecticut under King James. A son of one of John's brother married a niece of Daniel Boone, and the Boone name appeared in several subsequent generations. The Sessions family reached present Navarro County, Texas in 1846 when Isaac Boone Sessions arrived from North Carolina to settle in what was then Robertson County. He helped organize Navarro County, was foreman of its first grand jury, and served as justice of the peace and as commissioner for several years.139

Marcy) was born on 3 Apr 1884 in Navarro County, Texas.173,174,175 He married Laura Ursula ('Connie') CONRAD
on 3 Jul 1917.176,177 He died on 24 May 1959 in Navarro County,
Texas, at age 75.178,179 He was buried in City Cemetery, Mexia,
Limestone County, Texas.180,181
Laura Ursula ('Connie') CONRAD was born on 7 Sep 1892.182,183 She died on 31 Dec 1977 in Navarro County, Texas, at age 85.184,185,186 She was buried in City Cemetery, Mexia, Limestone County, Texas.187 She taught school in Rice. Her father was a doctor.188
Children of James Thomas FORTSON Jr. and Laura Ursula ('Connie') CONRAD were:
10. Anna Pauline FORTSON (Ida CLAYTON) (pictured
at left) was born on 26 Aug 1886 in Navarro County, Texas
(near Rice).200,201,202,203,204,205 She married Roger Frost ('Rod') BARTLETT, son of Jesse Marshall
('J.M.') BARTLETT and Mary Hester ('Mollie') CLOPTON, on 25 Dec 1907 in Rice,
Navarro County, Texas.206,207 She died on 30 Sep 1972 in Dallas, Dallas
County, Texas, at age 86.208,209,210,211,212 She was buried
in Rice, Navarro County, Texas.213
She was born on the family farm about two miles east of Rice and was named for Anna
Fortson Owen, a sister of her father. The family later moved into a house just north of
the Baptist church in Rice. She attended Kidd-Key College in Sherman, Texas. When they
married they moved into a house near where the Southern Pacific tracks crossed the Emhouse
road south of Rice; later they moved into Rice, a few houses south of his parents' home.
She died of cancer at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.214
Roger Frost ('Rod') BARTLETT
(pictured at right) was born on 7 Feb 1886 on the
family farm south of Rice, Navarro County, Texas.215,216,217,218 He died on 10
Nov 1942 in Rice, Navarro County, Texas, at age 56.219,220,221,222,223 He was buried in Rice, Navarro County,
Texas.224 After attending Southwestern
University in Georgetown, Texas for perhaps a year, he returned to Rice to farm and
operate various businesses, including a cotton yard. He operated a cotton gin at his
death. Active in local Democratic Party politics and mayor of Rice at his death, from a
brain tumor, in his later years he also was active in civil defense and boy scout work. He
and his wife lived in Rice and were Methodists.225,226,227
