Some of John LOOP's lines can be traced back seven generations, to Germany and Switzerland.

In the chart below, a person's father has a number that is twice the child's number and a person's mother has a number that is one number higher than the child's father's number.  Thus the father of number 6 is number 12 and the mother of number 6 is number 13.

First Generation

1. John LOOP (Christian, #2) was born on 23 Jun 1811 in Augusta County, Virginia.1,2 He married Margaret Rebecca SPOHR in 1829.3 He died in 1855 in Henderson County, Texas. He moved to Indiana in 1832, two years before his parents followed; then to Missouri (date unknown); about 1843 to Fannin County, Texas; and before 1850 to Henderson County, Texas. He was a farmer and mechanic and a Democrat.4,5,6  To read about his wife, their children, and some of their descendants, click on his name above or click here.

Generation Two

2. Christian LOOP Jr. (Philip LUPP, #4) was born on 17 Nov 1788 in Rockingham County, Virginia.7,8,9 He married Eva AIRHART (see #3), daughter of Christian EARHART and Elizabeth ZIRKLE, on 11 May 1810 in Augusta County, Virginia.10,11 He died on 20 Sep 1879 in Beckville, Montgomery County, Indiana, at age 90.12,13 He was buried in Providence Cemetery, Montgomery County, Indiana.14 While in Augusta County, Virginia they were members of St. John's German Reformed and Lutheran Church. In about 1834 they moved to the western edge of Boone County, Indiana, near Montgomery county. The trip from Virginia was by horse and wagon through wilderness and took four weeks. The Airharts migrated with the Loops. Five of the girls walked the entire trip. (One history says that Christian had a sister, Catherine, who accompanied him and Eva on the move and that he had two brothers, Phillip and Jacob, and some sisters who remained in Virginia.) The nearest mill was ten miles away, on the Cox River. One account of those days in nearby Montgomery County says that 'many of the farmers took their wheat to Chicago to market. The pioneers here lived in log houses, wore clothes made of flax and wool, raised on their farms, and woven, cut and made by the wives and daughters, and their food was of home production, varied by game from the forest.' In 1855 the Loops sold the Boone County farm and bought a farm near Beckville, in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, Indiana. He owned 220 acres when he died. He did all his business in German, although he could write his name in English. He was a life-long Democrat. Both belonged to the German Lutheran church.15,16,16a,16b,16c

Children of Christian LOOP Jr. and Eva AIRHART (see #3) were:

Andrew Loop

3. Eva AIRHART (Christian EARHART, #6) was born on 7 Apr 1793 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.27,28 She married Christian LOOP Jr. (see #2), son of Philip LUPP and Catherine _____, on 11 May 1810 in Augusta County, Virginia.29,30 She died on 28 Sep 1866 in Montgomery County, Indiana, at age 73.31 She was buried in Providence Cemetery, Montgomery County, Indiana.32,33

Generation Three

4. Philip LUPP (Ludwig, #8) was born on 1 Apr 1763 in Upper Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania.34 He married Catherine _____ (see #5).35 He married _____ _____. He married Catherine MINGA on 14 Oct 1805 in Augusta County, Virginia.36 He died in Botetourt County, Virginia. He was christened at the Blue Mountain Reformed Church in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He married two or three times. His first wife, Catherine, was the mother of his first child and possibly his first five children. He must have been living in Rockingham County, Virginia by 1788, as that is where his son, Christian Jr., said he was born in that year. By Sep 1801 he and a brother, Simon, owned land in nearby Augusta County. A few years later, probably in 1811, the family moved to Botetourt County, where he presumably was living when he died in the summer of 1824, as his will, dated 24 Jul 1824, was probated there in Oct 1824. Virginia records consistently spell the name as Loop, so it seems to have been with Philip that the name changed from Lupp to Loop. He was a farmer, and quite likely he still spoke German.

Children of Philip LUPP and Catherine _____ (see #5) were:

5. Catherine _____ married Philip LUPP (see #4), son of Ludwig Christian LUPP and Anna Maria SPATH.56

6. Christian EARHART (George, #12) was born circa 1767.57 He married Elizabeth ZIRKLE (see #7), daughter of Andrew ZIRKLE and Mary Catherine _____, on 25 Oct 1787 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.58 He died in Jun 1834 in Augusta County, Virginia.

Children of Christian EARHART and Elizabeth ZIRKLE (see #7) were:

7. Elizabeth ZIRKLE (Andrew, #14) was born on 3 Oct 1770 in Virginia.59 She married Christian EARHART (see #6), son of George EARHART and _____ _____, on 25 Oct 1787 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.60

Generation Four

8. Ludwig Christian LUPP (Johann, #16) was born on 7 Jan 1733 in Hof, Germany. He married Anna Maria SPATH (see #9), daughter of Johann Georg SPADT and Eliza Caterina _____, in 1756. He married Catherine PETERS on 1 Feb 1796. He died on 28 Jun 1798 in Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, at age 65. He came to America at age 20 on the ship Rowand, arriving in Philadelphia on 29 Sep 1753. From Hinke, Ministers of the German Reformed Congregations in Pennsylvania: "Shortly after his arrival, Lupp settled near Strausstown, in what is now Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County. Here he was at first the schoolmaster of the parochial school. But, owing to the lack of duly ordained ministers, he gradually assumed all the duties of a pastor . . . He was one of the numerous independent ministers . . . as there were not enough ordained ministers to supply all the Reformed congregations." For many years he ministered to parishes in Strausstown and Bern in northern Berks County. He then moved to the Lebanon area (in the next county west of Berks County) and served many parishes in what were then Lancaster and Dauphin Counties. He married three times, although only two of his wives' names are known. Hinke's book quotes from the "Hebron Diary": "[In 1789] I was in town and heard the Reformed pastor Lupp deliver a funeral sermon. I rejoiced over his evangelical discourse, since he is at other times a legalistically pious man, who attacks sins and evils with the thundering words of the law, which may result in shocks, but in the end the sheep that go astray are not sufficiently directed to the source of healing and life." Hinke also quotes one of Ludwig's successors, Rev. Henry Wagner: "He was not a man of classical education, and had not been regularly prepared for the ministry; he was, however, a well-read man, and pious servant of Christ, and much devoted in his pastoral attention to the people of his charge. It was his regular custom, in his pastoral visits, wherever he remained over night, to have the neighbors invited, in order to spend the evening with them in prayer and religious conversation. He seems to have been untiring in his pastoral labors to promote true piety and godliness among the people entrusted to his care, as a true shepherd of his flock." In 1792 he laid the cornerstone on the First Reformed Church in Lebanon, which still stands, on 10th Street, as the UCC Church. His grave marker is a replacement. The original was in German and translated: "Here sleeps a grey head Ludwig Lupp Minister for 12 years in Lebanon 1733, he was born January 7, 1733 Married 3 times He had 12 children, of whom 5 survive him. He died June 28, 1798 His age 65 years, 5 mos. and 3 weeks. It was my profession and my worldly office To teach what God and Jesus pleased To preach the gospel pure and true And to call sinners to pennance [sic], attonement [sic], and penitence So adieu! Friends, follow my teaching and my word Then we will see each other again at heaven's gate."

Children of Ludwig Christian LUPP and Anna Maria SPATH (see #9) were:

9. Anna Maria SPATH (Johann SPADT, #18) was buried in Salem Lutheran Church, Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. She was born on 5 Apr 1732 in Hesse-Nassau Province, Germany. She married Ludwig Christian LUPP (see #8), son of Johann Henrich LUPP and Anna Elisabeth RUBSAMEN, in 1756. She died on 27 Sep 1794 in Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, at age 62.

12. George EARHART married _____ _____ (see #13). He lived in Rockingham County, Virginia.  To go to a separate page on George Earhart and some of his descendants, click on his name above or click here.

Children of George EARHART and _____ _____ (see #13) were:

13. _____ _____ married George EARHART (see #12).

14. Andrew ZIRKLE (Lodowick, #28) was born in 1737 in Telford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.64 He married Mary Catherine _____ (see #15) circa 1763 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.65 He married Elizabeth HOTTEL on 17 Nov 1794. He died in 1816 in Forestville, Shenandoah County, Virginia.66 His schooling probably took place in the Little Zion Church, built on his father's land about 1730. His father died when he was about 9 years old, and his stepfather died a couple of years later. He probably moved to Virginia with his widowed mother in 1753, at age 16. In 1757 he bought 224 acres from George Brock, Jr. on both sides of Holman's Creek in what now is Shenandoah County, Virginia. Forestville now sits on the north end of this tract. He lived in the two-story log house built by Brock in the late 1740's or early 1750's on the north side of Holman's Creek, near Forestville. His home was about a mile from that of his brother, Michael. He farmed and operated a flour mill that he built on Holman's Creek about 1760. Indian raids occurred in the area until 1766. He engaged in several land transactions, including a land grant from Lord Fairfax in 1755. He was an elder of Rader's Lutheran Church, about one mile west of Timberville, Virginia. He wrote in German. He was in the Virginia Militia in 1775. He had no children by his second wife, Elizabeth. He probably died in May or June 1816, as his will was probated on 10 Jun 1816. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Rader's Church cemetery.

Children of Andrew ZIRKLE and Mary Catherine _____ (see #15) were:

15. Mary Catherine _____ married Andrew ZIRKLE (see #14), son of Lodowick (Ludwig) ZIRKLE and Maria Eva BEAR, circa 1763 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.81 She died before 1794. She was buried in Rader's Church Cem, Timberville, Rockingham County, Virginia.

Generation Five

16. Johann Henrich LUPP (Henrich, #32) was born in Hof, Germany. He married Anna Elisabeth RUBSAMEN (see #17), daughter of Henrich RUBSAMEN and _____ _____, on 18 Aug 1715. He was the schoolmaster in Marienberg parish, Hesse-Nassau Province, Germany, residing in the village of Hof. Apparently he was highly regarded in his parish, for he is recorded as godfather to many children who were not related to him.

Children of Johann Henrich LUPP and Anna Elisabeth RUBSAMEN (see #17) were:

17. Anna Elisabeth RUBSAMEN (Henrich, #34) married Johann Henrich LUPP (see #16), son of Henrich LUPP and Anna Catherina WIEDERSTEIN, on 18 Aug 1715.

18. Johann Georg SPADT married Eliza Caterina _____ (see #19).

Children of Johann Georg SPADT and Eliza Caterina _____ (see #19) were:

19. Eliza Caterina _____ married Johann Georg SPADT (see #18).

28. Lodowick (Ludwig) ZIRKLE (Henrich ZIRCKEL, #56) was born on 9 Oct 1705 in Ittlingen, Germany. He married Maria Eva BEAR (see #29) circa 1732. He died in 1746 in Telford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. His first name may have been Johann. He probably had a son, George Henry Zirkle, by an earlier marriage in Germany. He came to America in 1725 with his father and twin sister. He owned some land in Pennsylvania, and they farmed near Telford, in the Philadelphia area. The Rising Sun Inn, built in 1739, a short distance from Little Zion Church in Telford, stands on his land. They were Lutherans, and he gave one acre of land to be used for a Lutheran church 'so long as soon a moon a shining' (so long as the sun and moon shine). He was a farmer and saddler.

Children of Lodowick (Ludwig) ZIRKLE and Maria Eva BEAR (see #29) were:

29. Maria Eva BEAR was born in Germany. She married Lodowick (Ludwig) ZIRKLE (see #28), son of Henrich (Henry) ZIRCKEL and Euphrosina _____, circa 1732. She married Christopher OTTINGER after 1746. She died after Aug 1753 in Virginia. She was buried in Zirkle Cemetery, near Forestville, Shenandoah County, Virginia. She, two daughters, and five sons moved to near 'the Forest,' now known as Forestville, in what then was Augusta County, Virginia (and now is Shenandoah County), probably in August 1753. In 1755 she obtained a grant or patent for seventy-five acres on a branch of the Shenandoah River; the warrant for the survey, which was made in late 1754, said that this land adjoined other land she owned. They may have lived around Culpeper, in East Virginia, for a year or so before settling in the Shenandoah Valley. She had no children by her marriage to Christopher Ottinger. She probably was buried in the Zirkle graveyard on the east bank of Holman's Creek, which now is a pasture without grave markers, about one mile northeast of Forestville.

Generation Six

32. Henrich LUPP (August, #64) was born in Hof, Germany. He married Anna Maria HIBGE in 1683. He married Anna Catherina WIEDERSTEIN (see #33) in 1692. He died on 5 Jan 1733 in Hof, Germany. He was christened in 1657 and presumably was born in that year. In a 1711 census he and Anna are described as 'poor in possessions.'

Children of Henrich LUPP and Anna Catherina WIEDERSTEIN (see #33) were:

33. Anna Catherina WIEDERSTEIN married Henrich LUPP (see #32), son of August LUPP and Layb PFEIFFER, in 1692. She died on 15 Aug 1727 in Hof, Germany.

He and Euphrosina lived in Ittlingen, in the Palatinate area of Germany, south of Heidelberg. They had six children. With his twin children, Anna and Lodowick, he came to America in 1725 on a ship from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, immigrating because of religious persecution. They settled in Franconia Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Children of Henrich (Henry) ZIRCKEL and Euphrosina _____ (see #57) were:

57. Euphrosina _____ married Henrich (Henry) ZIRCKEL (see #56), son of Johann Lofenius (Levenius) ZIRCKEL and Katharina HIRTZEL.

Generation Seven

64. August LUPP (Anthony, #128) married Layb PFEIFFER (see #65), daughter of Anthony PFEIFFER and _____ _____, in 1648 in Bad Marienberg Parish, Germany. He died in Dec 1677. He was buried in Bad Marienberg Parish, Germany. He probably was born in Bach and lived and died in Hof, both of which are villages in Bad Marienberg Parish, Hesse-Nassau Province, Germany, and he probably was a farmer. In the 1650 Beilstein census, he, his wife, and a child are listed in Hof, along with his brother Christian and her father. In the 1665 census the are listed with two sons and four daughters, still in Hof.

Children of August LUPP and Layb PFEIFFER (see #65) were:

His birth place is unknown, but in 1646 he married in Lusslingen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland and in 1648 he was living in the Village of Balm, Pfafficon Parish, Switzerland. Pfafficon Parish is a county known as Bezirkshauptort (Staatsarchiv Des Kanton Zurich). The family moved from Switzerland to Germany around the end of 1652, settling in the town of Reihen, in the Palatinate District, as did many Swiss Mennonite exiles. Henry likely was a brother of Clemons Hirtzel, who came from Winterthur, Switzerland. He was a Calvinist (Reformed) minister from 1651 to 1670 at Reihen, Kirchardt, Steinsfurt, and Stebbach, Germany. Peter Hirtzel, also from Winterthur and living in Kirchardt in 1658, may have been another brother. Reihen is on the Elsenz, a small tributary of the Nechar River.

Children of Hans Heinrich (Henry) HIRTZEL and Maria STEINER (see #227) were:
