Mrs. Margaret Amanda Clayton, amiable wife of Capt. Joseph A. Clayton, died on Tuesday the 29th day of July 1873 of pulmonary consumption.  She has been a long sufferer and a patient one.  She was illy prepared in her feeble condition to bear the shock of her husband's misfortune.2  Her decline was rapid, she never rallied again but her nerve gave way under the sudden unexpected blow.  The path of sorrow and that path alone, leads to the land where sorrow is unknown.

1. Joe Guthrie, Corsicana, Tex., provided a copy to Roger Bartlett on 31 May 1973.
2. She had been ill for some time when her husband's arm was mangled by a threshing machine, and the news of the accident is thought to have hastened her death.  He died two days later.  Mattie Beth Harper Moore, "Historical Facts About Rice and Chatfield, Texas, Navarro County, and of Families of Both Communities," in Navarro County Scroll 1967 (Corsicana, Tex.: The Navarro County Hist. Soc'y, 1967), pp. 28-35.
