OK, this is a little confusing. There is a passage in Crichton's book, regarding an entry in Lt. Col. John's diary that refers to the death of his brother. I am uncertain who this may be, as David BLACKADAR has Adam's death ca 1725, Robert died ca 1689 (as written by Crichton, himself), and there is a burial at Greyfriars for the death of a Doctor William in 1696. So, either Adam did not die in 1725, or the Doctor William at Greyfriars was not John's brother, or there was another son born to the Rev. John and his wife Janet HAINNING. The diary entry for May 9, 1711 reads: [338]
"May 9. Was at the Duke's quarters all the forenoon. Hearing of my brother's death in Scotland, I took the resolution to go to Courtray to communicate the melancholy news to my wife. I arrived on the 11th and bless the Lord who has given us a comfortable meeting with each other again."

There is another entry in Lt. Col. John's diary that indicates the death of another brother (I suspect it could have been Adam). The diary entry was dated 5 March, 1722: [338]
"March 5. Alarmed in the morning by an express, that my brother is dying. I made ready, and immediately went for Edinburgh, but ere I got in, he was dead. I doubt not he has left this valley of tears - this weary wilderness, to enter into that fulness of joy, - those rivers of pleasure at God's right hand."
