Emma Margaret Lennon and Family

Emma Margaret³ Lennon (Margaret² Blaney, James D.¹) was born in Buffalo, Erie Co. NY on 30 May, c. 1861. [1] Like her Aunt Mary Ann Blaney, she was a milliner. She was one of the few Blaney descendants of her generation to leave Buffalo and indeed led a rather exciting life for a woman of her conventional background.

On 26 December 1882, at the age of 21, she married John D. Deckert at St. Brigid's Catholic Church in Buffalo. [2] The two made their home in Montana, where John had a homestead claim for 160 acres in Prairie Co. Emma proved the claim in 1884, indicating that John's claim must have been entered in at least 1879. [3] It is unclear how Emma, living in Buffalo, came to meet and marry a man homesteading in Montana. According to the register of the Sacred Heart Church in Miles City, Custer Co. MT, John died on 8 October 1883. His funeral service was performed by Chaplain Lindesmith of the U.S. Army. John was was 35 years of age, suggesting a birth year of c. 1848. [4] His only child was born a month later. Emma stayed long enough in Montana to prove the claim.

After John's death Emma returned to Buffalo, where she appeared living with her father in the 1892 census. On 20 November 1895 she married Millard F. Henderson at St. Joseph's Old Cathedral in Buffalo. The census records for his son indicate that Millard Sr. was born in Texas. It is possible Emma may have known Millard from Montana, since the two soon set off for there, settling in Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, where their son was born. Family members recall that Millard went off to join the Alaska Gold Rush and died there c. 1899.

After the loss of her second husband, Emma again returned to Buffalo, where she started a millinery shop with Anna G. Smith. By 1910 she had her own shop. She died in Williamsville, Erie Co. NY 23 February 1945 of meningococcus meningitis after an illness of seven days and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemtery.
