Augustus Otto Goetz and Ruth Goodman

Augustus Otto4 Goetz (Marie Blanche3 McGowan, Elizabeth 2 Blaney, James D1.) was born 3 October 1897 and baptized at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. His mother's cousin, Everett Carlisle, was a sponsor.

Gus attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was on the varsity crew. He worked for a time on Wall Street as a bond salesman and trader. 1930 found him working in a legal office in Ocean City, NJ. He made the New York Times on 17 August when he rescued a young woman from drowning in the surf, and won a dance contest with her later that night. That year he decided to see Europe while he was still young, and on the voyage there met the daughter of a well-known theater producer. They discovered a common interest in writing and the theater, and were married on 11 October 1932. The bride commented in a New York Times article (19 Dec 1995) many years later: "...my mother was very disapprovingly She said 'He's a drunk.' But I found him the most enchantingly witty man I've ever known in my life, and I've know some very, very witty men."

Ruth Goodman was born in Philadelphia on 11 January 1912, the daughter of Phillip Goodman, a prosperous theatrical producer, and Lily Cartun. In her father's home she met some of the day's great talents of stage and pen; when she was sixteen, George Gershwin made a pass at her in a rowboat! (New York Times, 19 Dec 1995) Together, the Goetzes adapted a number of novels to the stage, and won the Oscar for Best Screenplay for "The Heiress," (1949) an adaptation of Henry James's novel Washington Square. Their screen credits also include Sister Carrie, based on Theodore Dreiser's novel of the same name.
