Daniel William3 Lennon (Margaret2 Blaney, James D.1) was born in Buffalo on 29 July 1867. [1] In 1886 he was listed in the Buffalo city directory, living at home and working as a machinist. Intermittent listings in the city directories indicate that he continued in that profession for many years. Only one listing noted his employer: in 1896 he was working for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. [2]
William apparently married c. 1887, since in 1888 the Buffalo city directory no longer listed him at his father's home at 378 Fulton but at a new address at 35 Porter. [3] His bride was Anna Haley, born c. 1869 in Ireland. [4] The 1930 census record for their son, James J. Lennon, is more specific about her birthplace, indicating that James' mother was born in Northern Ireland. [5] Both the bride and groom were about 21 years of age when they married.
The family moved frequently and ranged wide; the Buffalo city directory shows them at various addresses throughout Buffalo, west on Porter St. near the lake front in 1888, to the south on Fulton Street not far from the Lennon family home 1891-7, to the east on Bailey Avenue near Buffalo's city line in 1906, and finally to the north on Elmwood Avenue in 1911. [6] During that time William and Annie had at least eight children. William changed trades around that time, as the city directory listed his occupation as "salesman." That occupation may have led him away from Buffalo, as the family did not reappear in the city directory. [7]
Annie's death may also have contributed to William's decision to leave Buffalo, since on 26 October 1920 the widower William D. Lennon of Pontiac, Michigan married Marion J. Thomas in Buffalo. Marion was born c. 1882 in Bradford, PA, the dughter of George Thomas, born in Buffalo, and Frances Wakefield, also born in New York State. She was 38 and still single; William was 43. [8] Marion was an Episcopalian, according to a notation on William's baptismal record at St. Brigid's Church. The two were married at the Buffalo Chancery. (Since Marion was a Protestant, they could not be married within the sanctuary at that time.) [9]
