NOTES FOR WILLIS: The following is taken from the records of the Probate Court for the Countyof Wayne, File No. 7730. Estate of Willis R. Harrison, formerly Willis Sharp; Adoption and Change of Name.
"May 28, 1875. Agreement for adoption dated May 28 1875, signed by Martin Harrison, Harriet M. Harrison and Mary Ann Sharp and acknowledged by them on May 28 1875, filed, setting forth that Martin Harrison and Harriet M. Harrison, his wife, each with the consent of the other and with the consent of the mother, his only surviving parent, have adopted as their child Willis Sharp, a minor, who was born on April 8, 1874, and hereby declare that they intend to make him their heir, that they desire to bestow upon him their family name and to change his name from Willis Sharp, as he has heretofore been called, to Willis R. Harrison, Mary Ann Sharp the mother and only surviving parent of said William (sic) Sharp, hereby consent to the adoption and change of name of her said child as above stated. May 28 1875. An instrument in writing heretofore executed and acknowledged having this day been presented to and filed with said Judge of Probate wherein Martin Harrison and Harriet M. Harrison, his wife, declare that Willis Sharp, a minor child of the age of 1 year, is adopted by them as their child with the consent of the mother and only surviving parent of said child, that they intend to make such child their heir and that they desire to bestow upon him their family name and have him bear the name of Willis R. Harrison. And Mary Ann Sharp, the mother and only surviving parent of said child, having therein given her consent to such adoption and change of name of her said child and said judge being satisfied of the good faith of such proceedings and that the said Martin and Harriet M. Harrison are suitable persons to have the charge of said child, Court ordered that said Martin and Harriet M. Harrison do stand in the place of parents to said child and that his name be changed to Willis R. Harrison." (Volume 100, page 158.)
Mary Ann Sharp was apparently the "hired girl" in the home of Arthur A. Harrison and his wife Florence Trowbridge. [Arthur is son of Alexander Harrison, a brother of Martin.] Martin impregnated her; the child was born; and Martin (according to family lore) refused to acknowledge the child or his part in fathering the child. By the time the child (Willis) was a year old, family pressure was brought to bear and Martin agreed to adopt the child.
We can only imagine what Harriet thought, or what her daughters thought, of all this. Charlotte Dell Harrison was 17 when Willis was born; May Cornelia Harrison was 16.
Martin Harrison died intestate. His estate of approx. 100 acres was claimed not only by Willis and his wife Cora, but also by Joseph Clarke, Jr., son of the deceased May Cornelia, and his wife; Myrtie Randall Wallace, daughter of the deceased Charlotte Dell, and George Randall, son of Charlotte, and his wife Lottie; and Ruby and Creola Combs, granddaughters of Charlotte Dell. It was only after much legal bickering, claims and counterclaims, that the North 20 acres of the East 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 24, and the West 12 acres of the South 45 acres of the East 1/2 of the NorthWest 1/4 of Section 24, Town 2 South, Range 9 East, Nankin Twp., Wayne Co., MI, was deeded to Willis and Cora Harrison.
