Descendants of Unknown Father Lane Generation No. 1 1. UNKNOWN FATHER1 LANE was born WFT Est. 1542-1589, and died WFT Est. 1581-1668. Notes for UNKNOWN FATHER LANE: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3055, Date of Import: Jul 21, 1996] I thought it would be of value to include the Preface of the pamphet that I compiled most of the information on the Lanes. Dennis Eugene Kane Genealogical Notes on the Families of Daniel Lane 2d and Mary Griswold Lane of Killingworth and Wolcott in Connecticut, copyright 1899 by H. W. Lane and A. C. Beckwith, The Independent Print, Wlkhorn, Wis.: PREFACE. In 1874 Rev. Samuel Orcutt published his invaluable "History of Wolcott, " containing, besides other matter, partial genealogies of about sixty of the old families of that town. In 1897 Rev. James H. Fitts, of Newfields, N. H., published the second of a series of three volumes of Lane Genealogies, - these volumes designed to include the descendants of eleven earliest settlers of the name, among whom no bond of relationship is so far discoverable. The second volume contains the descendants of ROBERT LANE, of Stratford, Conn., and, as far as here known, is a valuable contribution to New England Genealogy. Both these compilers fell into probably then unavoidable errors as to the Lanes of Wolcott. Few or no similar conpilations are free from inaccuracies, nor is it likely that this pamphlet will be found flawless. There is found some conflict of "authority, " or, at least, of statement, especially as to earlier generations of a few allied families. This, however, is usually in those details that, for the purpose now in hand, and under the difficulties and impossibilities attending pursuit of extact historical truth, must be regarded as of minor importance. It is hoped that no greatly misleading errors can be found, and that they who are most nearly concerned may find herein, as to their honored ancestors, a reasonable approach to such fullness and accuracy as is now attainable. But this little work is not offered as genealogy's "last word" to the living descendants of Daniel and Mary Lane. Whoso detects and corrects errors and knows or finds matter herein omitted may by so much add very disirably to the history of the Lanes of Wolcott. It has not been the purpose in these pages to set forth a Lane Genealogy, but to supply a few corrections and additions to the books already published, based in part on further examination of records at Killingworth, Watterbury, and Wolcott, - but more on the personal knowledge of living or lately living individuals of the sixth and seventh generations, descendants of five of the children of Daniel and Mary Lane. Such as the work is, some coming genealogist, in an as yet unborn generation, may find it of some small service. The circumstances under which it has been compiled and printed have made it desirable to go to press without waiting longer for more than a fairly full collection of desirable contemporaneous matter. Were printing delayed for twenty years longer something yet would by wanting; for much waiting as well as working is needful. To the records of Connecticut towns is owed most of that which is herein brought together as to the earlier generations of our various ancestral families. The continuity of the records is often broken by post-revolutionary neglect, but much oftener by the great westward movement which has dispersed the later posterity from sea to sea and between the limits of our zone. The period from 1775 to 1825 is from numerous causes one of much genealogical difficulty. Many a name and date, with other facts of value, have gone from us forever at the death of each gray-haired relative, in whose accurate memory alone that now so much desired knowledge was stored. This had been far otherwise had the now gray-haired living found earlier interest in that branch of man's history the province of which is to give to each individual, of what ever esteem in the world's sight, a place - and that with precision - in the lengthening muster-roll of once honored and now numerically great families. Much yet may be saved from the oblivion which already has overtaken much of the century's unwritten family history. If so wished, the compilers of thes few Notes will co-operate, as best they may, with their kindred of any family name in doing this for us small but to posterity true service. At some time far to come, posterity, which cannot be graceless, may value such service as we value both the service of our record-keeping colonial ancestors and the unusual care of some grand-parent who had the then rarely-given faculty of "looking before and after, " - genealogically. Since the first five generations of the Lanes and allied families were, as far as known, of Connecticut from earlier settlements until about 1800, it has not seemed needful to repeat the name of the state with each mention of a town in that state. A like omission has been made as to well-known towns of other states. It is probable that no great geographical difficulty will be met. The following explanation is made, of course, for such as never knew the venerable mother-state, and who hitherto have not found occasion to study the classic details of its map and to read the profitable history of its ancient towns. Stratford (by its Indian name of Cupheag) was organized in 1639 and received its present name in 1645. It is fourteen miles west of New Haven and forty-nine miles southwest of Hartford and near the mouth of the Housatonic. Before the last federal census was made, its western part, the borough of West Stratford, was annexed to Bridgeport, leaving to the present town about 2600 inhabitants. The first society of Killingworth (native name Hammonasset) was settled about 1660, and was included in the county of New London until Middlesex county was set off in 1785. This, the southern part of the ancient town, in 1838 was organized as the town of Clinton. The second society was formed was formed in 1735, then known as North Killingworth. The towns of Killingworth and Clinton are twenty-five miles east from Hew Haven and about thirty-seven miles south-and-by-east from Hartford, and are near the Sound. In 1890 their population was for Killingworth 582, and for Clinton 1384. Wolcott, at first included in Waterbury, was set off in 1770, and, following an ingenious Connecticut custom, was then named Farmingbury, - becuse it was formed from Farmington and Waterbury. In 1779 the eastern part was returned to Farmington, and in 1796 the town was re-named in honor of the older Governor Oliver Wolcott. It lies in the northern part of New Haven county, and adjoins Hartford county eastwardly and Litchfield county northwardly. It is nearly equidistant, - about 25 miles, - from Hartford and New Haven. In 1890 its population was 522, a gain, in ten years, of 29. Plymouth and Cornwall are in Litchfield county; Bristol, Plantsville, Southington, Wethersfield, and Windsor in Hartford county; and Guilford in New Haven county. The towns here named are the principal ancestral places memtioned in the following pages. Three of the "four descendants" mentioned on the title-page are Mrs. Joseph F. Smith, of Bristol; Mrs. Elisha R. Newell, of Plantsville; and Hiram W. Lane, of Russel, Penn.; each of whom has made personal examination of the several records at Waterbury and Wolcott. Most of the information relating to Mary Lane Alcox and of Daniel Lane 3d was patiently and carefully collected by Mrs. Smith. Besides her genealogical contributions, Mrs. Newell has furnished some interesting observations on the now venerable village of Wolcott. To Mr. Lane fell the brief history of the Camden branch of the family, and his liberality made it practicable to print that which it was at first intended to deposit in manuscript with the Historical Societies at Hartford, Albany, and Madison. The compilers have availed themselves most thankfully of the courtiously-given services of , among others, Mrs. Franklin F. Knous, of New Haven; Theodore F. Lane, of Wallingford; James Shepard, of New Britain; Hon. William Wallace Lee, of Meriden; Dr. George L. Parmele, of Hartford; B. Howell Griswold, of Baltimore; - all favorably known in the field of genealogical investigation. Among the town-clerks of Connecticut, none has been of more essential service than he of Killingworth, O. L. Dudley, Esq. Whatever the library of the Wisconsin Historical Society could contribute has been placed most freely within reach by Messrs. Reuben G. Thwaites and Isacc S. Bradley, respectively the secretary and the librarian of that useful and ever-growing State institution. One of the compilers owes at least some indefinite acknowledgment to his old friends, Messrs. Park and Kenney, of the Elkhorn Independent, for the unusual facilities accorded for the mechanical work of this contribution to our family history. Elkhorn, Wis., Feb'y 28th, 1899. Child of UNKNOWN FATHER LANE is: 2. i. DANIEL2 LANE, b. WFT Est. 1581-1616; d. WFT Est. 1641-1699. Generation No. 2 2. DANIEL2 LANE (UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born WFT Est. 1581-1616, and died WFT Est. 1641-1699. He married HANNAH WFT Est. 1621-1656. Notes for DANIEL LANE: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3055, Date of Import: Jul 21, 1996] Excerp from Genealogical Notes on the Famileis of Daniel Lane 2d and Mary Griswold Lane: Note - 1. Charles Lane, of Stratford, was born in 1629, if his age at death, in 1729, was given truly, 2. Daniel Lane settled at New London in 1651. 3. Catharine Lane was married to John Tuttle, of New Haven, in 1653. 4. Robert Lane settled at Stratford in 1660. As these four were contemporanious in generation, and nearly or quite so in immigration, they may have been children of one father. This may seem a shade more plausible as to Daniel and Robert from the facts that Robert's oldest son was named Daniel, and this name persisted in three more generations of Robert's descendants. Catharine and Robert had each a daughter named Hannah. If one may venture another guess, it might be that Robert's parents were named Daniel and Hannah. Of course, this is unfounded and unprofitable, but not more so than many another ingenious genealogical speculation. Children of DANIEL LANE and HANNAH are: 3. i. CATHARINE3 LANE, b. WFT Est. 1609-1636; d. WFT Est. 1658-1726. ii. DANIEL LANE, b. WFT Est. 1611-1655; d. WFT Est. 1625-1733. ROBERT LANE, b. 1639, Derbyshire, England; d. April 02, 1718, Killingsworth, Connecticut. Generation No. 3 3. CATHARINE3 LANE (DANIEL2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born WFT Est. 1609-1636, and died WFT Est. 1658-1726. She married JOHN TUTTLE 1653. Child of CATHARINE LANE and JOHN TUTTLE is: i. HANNAH4 TUTTLE, b. WFT Est. 1633-1676; d. WFT Est. 1650-1758. 4. ROBERT3 LANE (DANIEL2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born 1639 in Derbyshire, England, and died April 02, 1718 in Killingsworth, Connecticut. He married SARAH PICKETT December 19, 1665, daughter of JOHN PICKETT and MARGARET PICKETT. Notes for ROBERT LANE: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3055, Date of Import: Jul 21, 1996] Settled at Stratford in 1660. This information was extracted from a book given to Dennis E. Kane by his mother, Jane Louise Armstrong titled "Genealogical Notes on the Families of Daniel Lane 2d and Mary Griswold Lane Copyright, 1899, by H. W. Lane & A. C. Beckwith. The Independent Print, Elkhorn, Wis. Robert Lane, it may be assumed with confidence, was born in England. It has been said, through without show of proof or likelihood, that he was a native of Derbyshire. That he was born about 1639 may be inferred reasonably from these known facts; namely, - 1. A "home-lot" was laid out to him in 1660. 2. Dec. 19, 1665, he married Sarah Pickett, (who was baptized in 1648). 3. He served his town in the colonial assembly from 1699 to 1715. 4. He died April 2, 1718, at Killingworth. Then, if born in 1639, he was a landholder at the age of 21, a husband at 26, a legislator at 60 to 76, and died at 79. He is mentioned at Stratford as cow-keeper, fence viewer, and burier, and, in 1686, deputy to court of election at Hartford. In 1695 he removed to Killingworth, where he was active in affairs of church and town until his death. Robert was of even generation with Henry Crane; with the children of John Pickett, William Kelsey, Andrew Ward, Michael Griswold, and John Sheather; and with grand-children of George Hull, Joseph Loomis, Vincent Meigs, and the elder John Parmelee. That is, he was a generation younger than the settlers of Windsor, Hartford, Hew Haven, and Guilford, and was of the young freemen at the settlement of Norwalk, Stratford, and New London. The circumstances of his life at Stratford indicate that he was of the yeoman class to which England and America owe such large political and other debt. If he was of a Derbyshire escutcheon-bearing family, the burden of proof is on such as assert it. If, as intimated at page 172, Vol II, "Lane Genealogies, " there is in existence "a memorial of Lane aristocracy," its submissions to the Herald's Office for examination would determine, first, its genuineness, and then its proper custodian. The chances of finding such custody ever to have been with Robert Lane, though few among a thousand possibilities, cannot be set down definitely at zero. To such as are fairly informed as to early colonial custons it is somewhat significant that his name is never found in records with the respectful prefix of "Mr." It may be observed that while the Puritan founders of republican institutions in New England brought with them little knighthood and less nobility they were not social levellers. Birth and wealth, as well as official station, were respected and had due consideration, even in assignment of seats in the churches. Whatever mark of respect or distinction was our ancestor's right the clerk of his town was not likely either to be unaware of it or to disregard it. In England the name of Lane was ancient and sometimes honored. Robert and his father-in-law, John Pickett, whatever their ancestry, were men of character and capacity, --honored in their time, and most worthy ancestors of American freemen. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Native name Hammonasset, Connecticut.
