WILLIAM HAROLD11 WHIPPLE (EDNA10 CARMER, SARAH9 GRISWOLD, NATHAN8, ASENATH7 HURD, ABRAHAM6, DANIEL5, SARAH PICKETT4 LANE, ROBERT3, DANIEL2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born August 30, 1908. He married RUTH HARTIN May 05, 1951, daughter of WILLIAM G. HARTIN. Notes for WILLIAM HAROLD WHIPPLE: Harold and two of his friends, Donald Fox, and Lynn Knapp, went on a see America first jaunt riding in an ancient Model T "Flivver" with the inscription "Gloversville Gloves America". Their trip was documented in the local papers. When Harold went into service he was promoted from Private to Sergeant to Staff Sergeant to Technical Sergeant within his first year. He was sent to India, near Lahore in July 1943. Transfered to China in October 1943. Met Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai-shek when the Chinese notables made an inspection of their outfit. He found the generalissimo a bit older than he expected but nevertheless still a vigoorus and personable man. He also wrote of the great charm of Madame Chiang and stated that she had personally given him a small porcelain figure of a woman which he hopes to be able to preserve and bring home with him at the end of the war. Promoted to Master Sergeant in Oct. 1944. Served two years in China as armament chief of the 28th Fighter Squadron of the Chinese-American Composite Wing, a part of the 14th Air Force. On dec. 6, 1945 Harold received the following citation: Bronze Star Medal Citation. Master Sergeant William H. Whipple, 32291854, Air Corps distinguished himself by meritorious servive in direct support of combat operations from 1 May 1944 to 15 July 1945 as Armament Chief of the 28th Fighter Squadron. During this period, while stationed at advanced bases in China, Sergeant Whipple has displayed a quiet, conscientious, efficient leadership that has produced a superior armament section. His expert workmanship and powers of improvisation when adequate materials were not available have contributed largely in keeping the squadron's fighters at a maximum operational level. Coolness and Outstanding leadership when the net reported hostile aircraft in the vicinity is one manifestation of his courage and untiring devotion to duty. During the enemy push on Laohokow, and while this field was crowded with aircraft requiring maintenance, Sergeant Whipple found himself the only American present in the armament section when the big push started. Characteristically he buckled down and kept the guns firing irregardless of what organization to which they were assigned. The accomplishments of Sargeant Whipple during the cited period reflect credit upon himself and upon the Army Air Forces. (There were about 40 planes of 3 or 4 squadrons. the push lasted a week or 10 days) The C. J. Stoner Studio Inc., Interior Decorators, who also dealt in china and pottery. Clarence J.
