Notes for NATHAN GRISWOLD: Thinking he could do better then to be a famer after having become quite prosperous in that line, having a good farm and blessed with a family of three boys and five girls, he became a produce dealer. He bought farm produce of farmers and seld it in the cities, mainly in Syracise. He failed in business and lost his farm. Already fifty or more years of age, he went through bankruptcy and had to begin allover again. He got possession of 200 acres of land most of it covered with hemlock trees, lumber not being much value in those days. He made a contract with the village of Ithaca to pave the principle street with hemlock plank. He built a sawmill, and with his two eldest sons, he cut done trees on his land and sawed the logs into 3 inch plank. He drew the plank to Ithaca, 14 miles away, and built the plank road the lenght of State street. The road was still in good condition over 15 years later. With the money he made on the contract he paid for the 200 acres, tore down the log home he was living in and built a large pretty home. Notes for ABIGAIL LANE: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3055, Date of Import: Jul 21, 1996] Extract from Genealogical Notes on the Families of Daniel Lane 2d and Mary Griswold Lane: Removed about 1815 in the direction of Ohio, but the route, sojourning places, and the end of the journey, are alike unknown. It is said that she died in January, 1871, - perhaps in Ohio. Neither place nor time of Her husband's death seems discoverable. It is not an easy task to follow a westward-moving family, - and that one a dividing and still westward-moving family, through unorganized towns in half-organized counties, as must be done, if it can be done at all, in tracing out the builders of new states, in the heroic half of this century. The scanty recollections of two very old men, sons of Abigail Lane, are genealogically invaluable; for they serve in some sort to bridge the gap in time and space between Wolcott and farther Ohio, and to preserve the connection of their diverging posterity with their mother's olden house. Children of ABIGAIL LANE and DAVID MATTHEWS are: i. MARCUS A9 MATTHEWS, b. August 16, 1811; d. October 21, 1835. 111. ii. ABNER T MATTHEWS, b. July 11, 1814; d. March 1867. 112. iii. Notes for ASAHEL GRISWOLD LANE: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3055, Date of Import: Jul 21, 1996] Extract from Genealogical Notes on the Families of Daniel Lane 2d and Mary Griswold Lane: Asahel was taken by his widowed mother to Warren, Penn., whither she removed in 1815; engaged early in the lumber industry on the Allegheny and Ohio rivers; removed to Russell, (also in Warren county), in 1832; married Betsey; served two terms (1865 to 1871) as treasurer of Warren county. Asahel G. Lane was a man of more than usual ability and of correspondingly high character, and easily found his place among the leading citizens of his county. When, in 1840, he lost all his property that fire could destroy, and his remaining assets were by many thousand dollars less than his liabilities, he neither proposed nor accepted compromise, but at once set about rebuilding his business from the foundation. His well-directed energy won its deserved success, and long before his death he had regained his loss, and thenceforward prospered steadily. Throughout his career he had the respect and confidence of his community. The stout old pioneer at Stratford had no worthier descendant than this widow's son at Russell.
