Had to let you know that I had submitted a query to the Lane List. You sent me an email saying to post to the query page also. I did and within 2 days I found the descendants of the Benjamin F Lane who married Elizabeth Ann Sears. I'm researching the Sears line. But I was able to provide the proof that Elizabeth was a daughter of Barnabas Sears for this individual. Barnabas' will does not list her, however I have a letter from her brother written to family in NC that identifies her as a daughter and who she married. Thanks for letting me know about the page. By the way because of the tremendous success of it. I have started a Southern Sears page, devoted to only Sears families in the south, as the northern Sears are covered by Ray Sears and his page. So if you know anyone looking it's at http://members.aol.com/LeeCoNC/Sears.htm
Thanks again a million times
- Dear Heather,
I am a novice with the net and genealogy. One of my first delights
with the net was to find a Lane Descendant site. I enjoyed every thing
I read and the queries were wonderful. After thinking about it for
some time I thought why not try?
Heather had my query posted in less than 24 hours plus she helped me
when she knew I was hesitant about the query. So, thanks for your help
and for a wonderful site.
Two weeks ago I received e-mail from Deanna Spingola. She had a lot
of information on my James Lane! There was a second marriage we knew
nothing about and children, a will, a death certificate. Wow, what a windfall.
I am sure everyone knows the joy I felt.
What touched me the most was that Deanna has not found her Lane
descendant but has kept all research of others and is so willing to share.
She has just created her own web site for her watercolor quilts and will
add genealogy soon. It is http://www.xnet.com/~spingola.
So , thanks to two great busy ladies that go out of their way to help others
that are less knowledgeable. It is nice to know there are caring people in
- I have a wonderful success story! I knew very little about my 3rd
gr-grandparents Valentine Lane (1807-1886) and Sally Loomis (1813-1890). I
posted messages to this list and the Loomis list with no response. A few
months later I posted again, and found out that the names were John
Valentine Lane and Sarah Loomis, and I got a marriage date for them. In the
mean time I found some Census records which listed some of their children,
and some records at the Family History Center which listed Valentine's
parents and siblings. Armed with all this new information I posted again,
and got a response from a non-relative, but a wonderful record keeper, DJ
Weber, who remembered someone else researching this same family back in
1989. (I said he was a good record keeper!) The name was Robert Clover.
Even though the Clovers had moved, I was able to track them down, and they
are descendents of Valentine's brother Hiram. And now the best part - After
talking to Marguerite Clover and agreeing to exchange information she
dropped the big bombshell - she had a photo of Valentine and Sally! My
heart started beating very fast! When I asked her what I could do to get a
copy of it she said, "Not very much, I'll send it to you."
The photo wasn't dated, but judging from their estimated ages and the style
of clothing, it was probably taken about the time of the Civil War. I've
kept it a secret for several months now, and will give it to my mother for
Mother's Day this Sunday. I can't wait to see her face!

- Hi all,
I have to admit that I feel like I have a GREAT success story! I had just
gotten the information that a cousin had accumulated over the years. She was a
lot smarter than I and started tracking down family years earlier, all without
benefit of computer. I was just learning computers when I got into genealogy.
Almost immediately into searching all family surnames of grandparents I hit on
a cousin! This was only within a couple of months. Dear Dan then forwarded me
on to my newest and "bestest" friend, Nancy! I saw she had reported success
here and I wanted to let all know that it's been so great, and they've helped
me to more and now I've got MORE that I have been writing home about and
connecting up all those old family names we grew up hearing about. This has
been such a great experience and I'd like to thank all the helpful people on
the list. This is a great list and so THANK YOU HEATHER! You're doing a great
job and seem to have some great help too. And Thank you Dan for getting us
all together! Nancy, you've been a real blessing!
- 20 years ago i found out that my ancestor Mary G. Lane m. Benjamin Colby Jr. abt 1828 at Newbury,Mass. then the Lane pursuit was on in a flash- I scowered Mr. Fitts 3 vol set on the Lane's of Essex Co.Mass/Casco Bay Me. looking and looking and looking. to no avail - no Mary Lane ! and to boot their was only one Lane at Newbury in that time period 1810-20 and that was Humphrey Lane. And he had no Mary Lane.
Then i put out a query recently on the NORTHEAST engine and lo and behold someone sent me the page on Humphrey Lane out of the book. I had looked at it 20 years ago. but no Mary ! And then I was reading
the Pettingell ancestry and saw an ancestor named Polly but her real name was Mary - well by jingo - Humphrey had a Polly ! And to boot she was b. abt the same month and year - and then it all fell into place!
My kingdom ! My kingdom ! My kingdom for a Polly !
My new LANE Line is mostly from Gloucester earlier of Casco Bay,Me.
Mary Greenleaf Lane m. Benjamin Colby Jr. - Newbury
Humphrey Lane m. Susanna Greenleaf - Newburyport
Solomon Lane m. Abigaill Gott - Gloucester M. 22 MAR 1764
Joseph Lane m. Deborah Harraden - Gloucester
John Lane m. Dorcas Wallis - Gloucester/Casco Bay
James Lane m. Ann White Casco Bay
I have been able to make great progress on most of the lines except Abigail Gott b. abt 1736 - if anyone has her ancestry please keep me in mind.

- Hi Heather,
I just wanted to let you know that another cousin saw my queries and all the Lanes that either of us knew but she knew it was the same family! Her father and my mother are first cousins but have been away from each other for probably 50+ years. What is stranger is that her dad and mom and she are all living here in WA, where my mom and myself and family are living. What's even stranger is that her dad's sis is living now in the same town as my moms brother, and they didn't know it! Now we are all getting acquainted/reacquainted! It's been a heartwarming year for me as far as family relations go! I've reached out in about 4 directions and touched! This all started with the Lane List! Thanks ever so much!
