1. Name of second husband sent to me by Carroll Warschak email--

2. Some information about the Cuellar family in Texas I haven't made a connection to this yet. I recieved this from Paula Cuellar, a Cuellar researcher.

"Hi Tawsha,

I have been going to San Antonio Library in genealogy. All the
Cuellar's came from Spain through Mexico. Here maybe this will help you
I do believe you Bernito Cuellar is related to my husband. Also all
the cuellar's are related through thur the following information please
let know good luck also if you go to the main library to look you won't
find cuellar's as cuellar. You have to look under Hispanic or Mexico but
remember the cuellar's are spanish mostly. From a town in spain called
Seqovia Spain. And they are jewish turn to Roman Catholic. Here you go
this is what I have found lately .

In 1950, Benjamin Cuellar and Benjamin Cuellar, Jr. introduced their
magisterial genealogical study entitled, Saltillo, Revilla and San
Antonio-Frontier Crossroads for a Group of Pioneers. Centered on the
Lisarraras y Cuellar family, this detailed work encompassed many families
who settled that area of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico which includes
the two Laredos, Zapata and Ciudad Guerrero. It was fitting that this study
appeared on the bicentennial of the founding of Revilla (Ciudad Guerreo or
Guerrero Viejo.) We are fortunate that this wonderful forty-seven year old
legacy can still be obtained.
As with any study, however exhaustive it may be, there is always new
information that comes to light. This was the case when a trip to the
Saltillo municipal archives resulted in obtaining the last will and
testament of the progenitor of the Lisarraras y Cuellar line in northern
Mexico and beyond-Bartolomé de Lisarraras y Cuellar. Other testaments of his
descendants were also found. This bonanza helps to illuminate the
progression of this family line through the early years. The following study
is meant to contribute in a very small way to the Cuellar masterpiece. In
essence, it just fine tunes some details.

Bartolomé made his last testament on 19 February 1674. In it he stated that
he was a resident of Saltillo, but originally from the Villa de Salamanca in
New Spain (in the present Mexican state of Guanajuato.) He stated that he
was the legitimate son of Antonio de Lisarraras and Ana de Cuellar. He
declared that he was married to María Guajardo and his legitimate offspring
consisted of 1) Ana, 2) Miguel, 3) María Juana, 4) Sebastiana, 5) Melchora,
6)Clara, 7) Tomas and 8) Ascencio. He mentioned that his daughter Ana was
married to Juan de Arispe. Of interest is the fact that Bartolomé mentions
that some documents showing ownership of land he inherited from his parents
were in the possession of his cousin Nicolas de Lisarraras who lived in the
Valle de Salamanca-a clear indication that others of the Lisarraras family
came to the new world besides Bartolome's father. A cursory look at the
records of Guanajuato revealed various individuals in the region carrying
this Basque surname.

"Twenty days into the present month of March [1705], passed from the living
into eternal [life], Asencio de Cuellar..." so state the probate papers of
Asencio, Bartolomé's youngest son. Ascencio died intestate, leaving a widow
with five minor children. His wife was Ana Garcia and his five children were
1) Juan Antonio, 2) Tomas, 3) Bartolomé, 4) Joseph Martín and 5) Lucia. The
Benjamin Cuellar study lists an Asencio who married an Ignacio Oranday in
Saltillo on 18 December 1734 as another son- I have not been able to
substatiate this. This assertion is echoed by Rodolfo Gonzalez in his work,
Apellidos de Tam., N. Leon, Coah. y Texas. Additionally, Guillermo
Garmendia's study, Origen de los Fundadores de Tamaulipas-Laredo, mistakenly
places Tomas's birth in 1713 and Bartolomé's birth in 1712. As one can see,
this is not possible since their father died in 1705. A more precise date
for Tomas' birth is 1696 if one believes his death record recorded in the
parish archives in Guerrero Viejo. The records state that Tomas was 81 years
old when he died on 9 March 1777. His brother Bartolomé died earlier on 7
June 1775. Most of those carrying the Cuellar name in South Texas and beyond
descend from Ascencio through his five children.

It was Tomas who along with his father-in-law, Miguel Martines, took the
first petition and memoria in the summer of 1750 to José de Escandon asking
to settle the villa that became Guerrero Viejo. When the fall of 1750 was
battling to overtake the summer heat, Miguel Martines, his sons-in-law Tomas
and Bartolomé Cuellar and eleven other families reached the site of the
future Guerrero Viejo as its first settlers. Later on in October, Vicente
Guerra-Cañamar arrived with the the rest of the families that were recruited
for the settlement.

Returning to the Cuellar study, on 3 July 1715, Captain Miguel de Cuellar,
legitimate son of Captain Bartolomé Cuellar and María Guajardo, made his
last will and testament. He was married to Theresa de Aguirre. The marriage
produced three children, 1) Miguel, 2) Captain Bartolomé and 3) Ana. Rodolfo
Gonzalez in his Apellidos etc., mistakenly assigns a fourth son named
Nicolas to this Captain Cuellar. Benjamin Cuellar's study skipped this
Captain Cuellar and mistakenly listed the younger Miguel (the grandson) as
being the son of Bartolomé Cuellar and María Guajardo. Additionally the will
states that Ana was married to Antonio Lobo Guerrero.

The younger Miguel de Cuellar died in Saltillo on 8 January 1756. He was
married to Margarita de los Santos Coy and they had two children from the
marriage. They were 1) Santiago and 2) Theresa. A third child for Miguel was
3) María Ignacia, but from the way the will mentions her, she was conceived
outside of his legitimate marriage. The will on occasion mentions his
father-in-law, Don Lazaro de los Santos. Also mentioned are his brother
[in-law] Don Pedro de los Santos and his sister [in-law] Doña María de los
Santos. He also mentions a sister-in-law, Doña Josepha Baez Treviño, the
same Josepha Treviño Maya that Gonzalez's Apellidos etc. mentions as the
wife of Miguel's brother, Bartolomé. Benjamin Cuellar speculated via a
dotted line that this Miguel de Cuellar perhaps was the father of the Ana
Josepha Lisarraras y Cuellar who married José Cayetano Canales on 26 January
1755 in Revilla. This is not the case as will be explained. Ana Josepha
Lisarraras y Cuellar actually was the daughter of Tomas Cuellar and María
Ines Martines. A deligencia matrimonial in the parochial archives of
Guerrero contains Josepha's marriage petition in which she states that her
parents were indeed Tomas and María Ines.

The Lisarraras y Cuellar family and their decendants have profound roots in
the Spanish Borderlands dating back to the seventeenth century. Listed below
are some of these pioneers and their descendants that tamed a semi-arid land
and made it prosper through the centuries. Some twelfth, thirteenth and
fourteenth generation descendants were left out for privacy reasons.
However, if some of those want to be included in this chart, please e-mail
me tejasjj.

11. William Blue, March 2000, Tawsha's Genealogy file.
. William Blue -Blue researcher in Seattle, census records of MO and Grayson county TX, marriage record.
Here is the information I received from William Blue;

Hi Tawsha

Sarah and Emma BLUE in the 1860 census are in the following family from 1850:

1850 Grayson County TX
350 M. BLUE 25 M Farmer VA Son of Wm., below

William is the father of Meredith BLUE. He was a preacher and moved around a lot - based on the birthplaces of his children and the M.E.C.S. (Methodist)

He told me to check the library at SMU and see if they have a record of him as a preacher. but i haven't had the time to do that yet.

It looks like he was in MO in 1840, so I checked there and found him in Benton County MO.

So, Meredith BLUE and Ellen KAYS are the parents of your Suel BLUE/BUNCH.
Suggest you look for guardianship and adoption records in Grayson Co. TX or Sevier Co. AR.

William appears to be in the following family:
1.1.1.9 David BLUE (ca1774-1844), m1.1796 Alice DAWSON, m2.1836 Mary "Polly" COOPER (b.ca1790). David was born in Hampshire Co. VA and, when he became of age, he left Virginia to move west with many of his brothers and sisters. He and his brother, Abraham, first went to Nelson Co. KY, where David married Alice (Ally) and Abraham married Sally DRAKE. Ally was a daughter of Thomas DAWSON. The next record we have for David is his signature on a "Petition of Citizens of Dearborn Co. (IN)", dated 13 Feb 1806, asking for "a post road from Cincinnati to Lawrenceburgh, thence to mouth of Kentucky River". Then in March 1807 his name, along with that of his brother William, appears on a census list for Dearborn Co. On 23 Apr 1808 he purchased 151 acres of land in Dearborn Co. (Sect. 2, Twp. 5, Range 1W) from George Crist. Three years later he sold that land (151 acres) to John Crandon. This land was near that which his brother, Abraham, owned and sold in 1810. David then made three purchases of land near Laughery Creek in what is now Ohio County IN; two (1812 and 1817) in the west half of Sect. 27, Twp. 4, Range 2W; and one (1814) in the SW part of Sect. 22, Twp. 4, Range 2W. In 1809 he received a Federal land grant for the SW qtr of Sect. 1, Twp. 5, Range 2W. He is described as living in Butler Co. OH at that time. In 1813 he assigned this patent to _____ Dawson. Federal census records indicate that David was living in Dearborn Co. in 1820 and 1830. In 1829 he purchased several lots in the town of Hartford from John Livingston. Over the time period from 1829 through 1837, David sold his property in Dearborn Co. and by 1840 he had moved to Ralls Co. MO, where he was living near his brother Jesse. Alice appears to have died between 1830 and 1840, for in the 1840 census David's wife is two decades younger than the wife he had in 1830. His marriage to Mary took place in Ralls Co.and the 1850 census of Ralls Co. MO shows a Mary BLUE, age 60, living near David's grandchildren. He may have m.1833 Sarah ANDRES in Union Co. IN. David died in Ralls Co. MO and his estate was settled in that county in 1846. Son William did not receive a share of the estate, so he probably died before that time with no heirs of his own.
There was an unidentified David BLUE living in Hamilton Co. OH at the time this David was living in neighboring Dearborn Co. IN. The Hamilton Co. David had a wife named Abigail, probably Abigail WITHAM. He was a taxpayer in Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co. in 1808 and 1810.
1.1.1.9.1* John BLUE (b.ca1797), m. Rebecca _____ (b.ca1802).
1.1.1.9.2* Margaret BLUE (b.ca1800), m. Joshua WILSON (b.1800). She was age 16/26 in 1820 census.
1.1.1.9.3 William BLUE (b.ca1801), m.1828 (prob) Mary ROSBERRY.
1.1.1.9.4* Nancy BLUE (ca1809-1867), m.1831 Michael McGUIRE (1807-1854).
1.1.1.9.5* Maria BLUE (b.1810+), m.1831 William McGUIRE (ca1809-1850).
(Census records indicate that David and Alice may have had as many as five sons and three daughters.)

The marriage of William to Mary ROSBERRY is deduced from the marriage record in Dearborn Co. IN. The date (1828) does not match the ca1825 birth of Meredith BLUE, so that presents a problem. Also, William in TX was married to Elizabeth, not Mary. Of course she could be Mary Elizabeth ROSBERRY.

You can trace the ancestry of David BLUE, above, on the BLUE website.

Quote from Jo Watts this was a Family Legend in her family, her father first told me of this, I haven't checked it out yet though but it is interesting,
"Notes for SUEL BUNCH:
Family legend states that the wife of this Suel Bunch, as a child, was stolen by Indians and not found and rescued for many years. The family story goes on to say that the book written by Alan Lemay and subsequent movie, "The Searchers", starring John Wayne, was based on this story."

17. David Bunch, May 2000.
"At age 51 Suel married Hannah Mullins," quote from Hannah and Suel's grandson David Bunch.

And even if a marriage record isn't found Suel BLUE/BUNCH lived with Hannah Mullins for 7 years in and around Ardmore and Madill OK, and that I believe is considered common law in the state of OKlahoma.

21. She died from complications from surgery
22. Maud was first married to a Hess, but he "never came back after he went to the pen." The way Grandma remembers it, is that "he took the blame for something", and was sent to "Leavenworth, Kansas." "Troy run him down", but he never came back. Troy is Maud's oldest Hess son. Lewis is the other. Later, she married a Brinkley."
Quote from Cassie New, wife to Jack New-Maud's brother --I received from their grandaughter Debra Greenlee.
23. Quote from Maudiene Hess-granddaughter of Will Hess,
"We know that a rich Aunt got him out of prison, some way, and took him to
California. He settled in the Long Beach area. There he ran, on, a
gambling ship from there to Catalina Island. He re-married (we Never
knew if he divorced Maud or not, in those days, some say they got away
with it) and had a daughter.
He was a big winner one night, as the story goes, and won about
$30,000.00. He never returned home.
They later found him in a car that had crashed into a bridge, what
happened know one knows, but the money was gone.
He was buried in North Hollywood. There have been many stories
circulating around this man, for as long as I can remember. My Dad and
Uncle never mentioned him. But later they did get to know their half
sister.
In the area of southeastern Oklahoma it is well known as "the bootlegging
country". Most of the hills were full of renegades, outlaws, people
running or hiding for one reason or another. Alot of mobsters and
outlaws, hid out there, even Bonnie and Clyde were known to have been
there. Most people were not willing to talk a lot about the actual
facts of their lives in those days. Even though they loved to tell
stories and some times you would hear a different version, of the same
story, from different people. That's what I found with Wayland Hess.
There are many pieces to his story. Most people still remember the Hess
name in southeastern Oklahoma, but, few that remain, are welling to talk
about it, even to this day."
24. Direct quote from Lenae Smith, " Waylon was a gambler. One night he had won a lot of money and after leaving the establishment was robbed and killed--shot I believe. Helen waas a small but fiesty woman put him in the car and drove him somewhere to be buried. He was born 1887 and died 1926. I am still trying to find out more information about him."

(Gearldine Brinkley) and she would fish in the pond in the back of the house, but mostly she would fish in the one in the front of the house. She would spend hours fishing with her big fishing hat. We would go down the hill and fish with her. I would talk to her on the phone all of the time. She made the best biscuits and homemade soup.
43. Debra New Greenlee.
"Until he died, Grandpa lived in a one room, corrugated tin-sided house, no bathroom, no water heater. (It had only three sides when they moved in, out of a tent, in a driving rain storm.)
I spent many weekends with them as a child. Mind you, my new Father (I don't like to call him stepfather, he's too dear.) was an affluent building contractor, and we were used to nice things. I'm sure this explains the vivid recollections.

Occasionally, Grandpa would take a dip in the irrigation canal across the street in order to bathe, otherwise, I kind of doubted that he did. He dipped snuff, and drank a lot of beer. He used to keep an old trailer on the place, with plywood sides, to throw the beer cans in. When he had a trailer full, probably 5 X 8 X 6 or 7 feet. he took it somewhere to sell the tin.
Grandma's drinking glasses had all come, originally full of snuff. (You've undoubtedly heard of snuff glasses.)
Grandma used to heat water in a cast iron kettle on an old gas stove, that of course, required matches to light it, and filled a washtub in the middle of the floor to bathe me, this when I was between 8 and 10. (1964-66) The stove also doubled as their heater on cold days.
They raised a garden for their vegetables. Grandpa raised peaches for income, and they "cured" olives. Grandma says that for years after he died, people would call her asking to buy more olives. I remember the varying stages in oak barrels, out under a shade tree.
I think most of their meat was catfish. They fished a lot, and lived pretty near a river, which helped. They kept bees, and of course, sold the honey, too. He had a lot of little enterprises. He trapped fur, I can remember stretched beaver and muskrat pelts, drying in an out building, which was stacked with canned fruits, and trapping and fishing implements. I feel like I've lived in two different times!
Grandma still has the wringer washer and the treadle sewing machine that she always used. Washing was a job undertaken in the outdoors.
Grandpa had an old bench seat from some old car set up under a black walnut tree. He w ould sit there and have me run in the house to get him another beer while he made trumpets for me out of mature onion stalks. Then he would make a whistle out of a blade of grass set across his thumbs. I think it frustrated him, as much as it frustrated me that I could never make either one make a sound!
He played the fiddle! Well! Imagine him stomping his boot, singing and fiddling all of those old songs that you don't hear anymore!
Grandma would pick wild raspberries with me, then mash them, and add sugar and water for the most wonderful summertime refreshment in the world! Then there would be the biscuits, dripping with butter and honey, cut fresh from the comb (sitting in a saucer on the table)." Quote from Debra New Greenlee about her memories of her Grandfather "Jack" New.

" Emma Farley was born in Doyle Arkansas a few miles east of Nashville. Then the Farley's moved to Center Point Arkansas. In Nov. of 1897, The Farley's moved to Goodwater, OK(a few miles east of Idabel, OK. They moved in a covered wagon. Not too long after they moved to Goodwater, Ok William Farley caught pneumonia and dies. The winteer of 1898 is one of the coldesst on record for the Ark-La-Tex. Shortly after William Farley died, John William Singleton went to Goodwater riding a horse named Nag to help Betty Farley raise her children. One day John and another brother were playng with and Indain boy on the front porch of their house. John and his brother were laughing and the Indian boy got mad cause he thought they were laughing at him. John William Singleton ran out of the house and kicked the Indian off the porch.

History of Ultima Thule

Ultima Thule is Greek for the ultimate or last place - it referred to
the northernmost part of the habitable ancient world.

Ultima Thule in Sevier Co. is the last place in Arkansas before you
come to the Oklahoma line.

If you were traveling West in a covered wagon on the Fort Towson trail
in the late 1800's, you would come to Ultima Thule just before you
exited the United States -- beyond was Indian Territory. It was the
border crossing town into Indian Territory on the most traveled road
through south Arkansas.

The Fort Towson trail went from the crossing of the Mississippi River
at Point Chicot,
through Camden, AR, through Washington, AR (the Confederate Capital of
AR during the Civil War), through Paraclifta (the dominate town in
Sevier Co. before the railroad), and through Ultima Thule before
entering Indian Territory and going to Fort Towson, the major western
military outpost in southeast Indian Territory.

141.

I have a David Bunch that married a Bettie Cunningham both 17, both of Ultima Thule in Sevier County Arkansas. Nov 11, 1899 it was with written consent of Mrs. R. Cunningham mother of Bettie. This Mrs. Cunninham was Rosa Waldon prior to marriage to Cunningham. Interesting here is I also have another Bunch that belongs in my Blue -Bunch family but I can't find out where she belongs. Her name is Lucy Bunch and she died having her second son. She married Manny Waldon. same name as this Rosa Waldon., maybe a connection here?

(Note: Manny Waldon was the husband to Lucy Bunch .she died during child birth having Willie. There is a strong probability that Lucy is either the daughter to David Blue/ Bunch or Asa Bunch. Manny remarried to a Minnie.)

Gearldine Bunch Brinkley remembers that one of the Bunch men ran the railroad and she remembers that their daughter married a Waldon.

Note: David Blue/Bunch and Suel Blue/ Bunch had a sister Lucienda Blue that also married a Waldon.

DINWIDDIE. He was a carpenter and painter. Baptist religion. I remember
him being a tall lankly stuped person and was sickly. Probably attributed
to the paint. He had breathing problems and he and his family lived in New

"My mother had told me that her mother and Mr. BRINKLEY had divorced when she was a
young girl. That her father was phyically abusive to her, but not to SETH
or MYRTLE. My mother always walked with a limp that she, SETH and MYRTLE
attributed to Mr. BRINKLEY kicking her off a a porch and breaking her hip
when she was a young girl.

She also described Mr. BRINKLEY as being a "dapper dan" and womanizer. That
he also dressed in a clean stiff white shirt and black tie every day. That
he was bald headed. There was some story about him running off with a share
cropper's young daugther.

She also told me that her family lived in Idabell, OK for a while."

this is a quote from an email that Billy Seth Ball sent me about Elrod Coleman Brinkley.

154. "Alma his wife died at 7:00 p.m. Sat. June 14, 1952." Quote from a letter I found in a bible written by Douglas O. Brinkley.
155. "Troy died 5:30 a.m. on June 16,1952." Quote from a letter I found in a bible, written by Douglas O. Brinkley.
156. Quote from Maudiene Hess Troy's daughter;
"Cause of Death: Auto Accidnet
When he was a young boy, he and his brother, were abandoned by their
Father. Some say he went to the pen, for something his brother did, and
some have other stories. We do know he was a gambler. For what ever the
reason, he left a wife and two little boys without a Father.
As a young man Troy wandered into the hills of Oklahoma. We know that
his grandfather and grandmother Hess lived in Wright City, by the census
records of 1910.
While in those Hills, he met a young fifteen year old girl by the name of
Alma Wolfe. Those two fell in love and were married when she was sixteen
and he was seventeen. 1926 was not the best of times and they moved in
with his Mother and second family, the Brinkleys.
He floated from place to place looking for work. Alma either lived with
his Mother or went back to the Wolfe place, to stay with her family. They
did not have a family until later in their lives.
In 1935, after several miscarriages, they finally had a baby girl and
three years later in 1938 a son was born. Times were still hard and he
had to provide for his family, so he hit the road again.
He was in Alameda, CA in 1941, working in construction. Also, in the
Merced and Modesto area. He traveled up the coast and was in the
Crescent City area, when the First Pacific Coast Torpedoed Ship sank on
Dec. 20, 1941. He went on to Medford, Or. and was there in June 1942.
In his picture album he has many pictures of the Ashland, Crater Lake
area. He traveled down pass MT. Shasta, as he stopped and took a picture
of it in the back ground.
He headed back to Oklahoma. He wrecked his pick-up truck on the way
back. He had come back to get his family. I just don't remember my Dad
much when I was that young, all I remember is the Wolfe place, cousins
and our animals and the quiet, of living in the Hills of Oklahoma. I
don't remember a war, as we didn't have electricity.
We started traveling, following Dad's work. Most of his brothers were
with us. We lived in Ardmore, OK, then on to Clifton, AZ. In those
mountains, we lived upstairs overlooking the main street of Clifton, we
were there for Christmas that year and Uncle Doug (Douglas Brinkley)was drafted into the
Army.
We moved on to Pleasanton, CA and we lived in a store front for awhile,
as places were hard to find to rent. Then on to Placerville. He settled
his family in a small house there. Mom's oldest brother John and his
family lived there. Also some of Dad's other brothers were there for
awhile. He and his brother Louis, bought a pear ranch, and Louis settled
on it and Dad headed for Alaska and Canada to work on the Al-Can
highway. When he came home he decided to head up north and that's when
we ended up in Cottonwood. He went into the car business.
We lived in Cottonwood for about four years and he moved his business and
family to Red Bluff. He had a good business going. Just started a Jeep
Agency and parts house, when our world fell apart. They had just had a
new little baby boy in Feb. 1952 and even though he was born later in
their lives, no baby could have ever been more loved or wanted more.
They were so proud of him and their two teenagers. They always loved
each other, through the thick and thin years.
He was a strict man, a very loving man, and one anyone could count on.
The best memorial I can give my Dad is he was a MAN OF HIS WORD and HE
LOVED HIS FAMILY as well as others. He taught us to,
LOVE THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART."

"I also give grant and bequeath unto my daughter Ellender Blue wife of

five dollars out ... my estate ... and at the death of Sarah Kays eight
hundred and twenty five dollars out of the [value of the] negroes first

William's probate file (case #681, on microfilm in Warsaw) has Elender
Blue's signed receipt for the $25 dated 12th February 1855.

Sarah Kays' will dated 3 February 1858 says "Sixth I give devise and
bequeath to my sister Elender Blue or Elender Bunch as it has been
reported she has since remarried to a Mr. Bunch twenty five dollars to
her and her heirs".

In William Kays' probate file #681 there is a undated petition for sale
of his slaves, apparently filed after Sarah's death. It reads in part:
"There is bequeathed to Ellender Blue wife of Meredith Blue & who now
resides in the state of Texas & has since intermarried with a man by the
name of Bunch the sum of eight hundred and twenty five dollars to come
out of said slaves".}

Hello, It's great to hear from you. We live in Sulligent, Alabama
which is
about 20 miles from Amory, Mississippi.
Mother had always told me about her immediate family moving to Texas
for a
few years when she was a small child and they visited with her Great
Uncle
"O" Omar (brother to Sarah and Joel) when they were there. She never
told me
how they came to be in Texas. I don't think she really knew until about
twenty years ago.
Her great uncle's son, Joe Mitchell (I think he was Jack's son(Jack
being
another brother of Joel and Sarah.) was doing a family tree on the
Mitchell's in Texas and Oklahoma and they traced him back to Monroe
County
Mississippi.
They kept in touch with him for several years and Mother and a few of
her
family visited at a Mitchell Reunion in Oklahoma in the 1980's.
Anyway, they say that when my grandfather Arthur Mitchell was only a
small
baby, his grandfather (James Mitchell) owned a cotton gin just a few
miles
from Amory, MS. The gin burned and he moved his family to Oklahoma or
Texas,
I'm not sure which. Joel was the only child married and my grandfather
was
the only grandchild born at the time. Several years must have passed
and
James died and is buried in Texas. My great-grandfather Joel Lafayette
(he
was known here as Lafayette instead of Joel) came back to Mississippi.
The
other children must have married and had children by this time. I guess
it
was about a 5 year span because my grandfather Arthur always said he
went in
a covered wagon and came back to Mississippi on the train when he was 5
years old. James Lafayette brought his wife and children, his mother,
and
two of his sisters back (Cora and Bettie May). Cora married a Moffett
and
mother knew her well. Bettie May never married. Great-Great Grandmother
Eliza, Great Grandparents, Joel Lafayette and Zorado Paige Bott
Mitchell,
Great Aunt Bettie May, Grandparents Arthur and Daisy Shields Mitchell
are
all buried at Hatley Cemetary about 4 miles from Amory.

I borrowed pictures from Mother for family tree I put together for
Christmas. I felt so fortunate to have pictures so far in the past. I
have a
picture of Joel Lafayette and Zorado Paige Bott Mitchell (my great
grandparents) and all their children. Also, I have a picture of Joel F
and
Mary Jane Suell Mitchell (my great great grandparents) James was his
father) and some of their children, but I'm not sure which children. I
will
have to ask mother and email you back.

I'm a little mixedup. I was thinking James was Joel Lafayette's father
but
he was Joel F.'s father. Maybe James, Joel F. and Joel Lafayette all
went
went. I'm not sure.
Hope you enjoy the pictures.
On the picture of Joel Lafayette and Zorado Bott there are 14 children.
They
named one of their sons Joel, too. My grandfather Arthur is on the
bottom
row fartherest to the right. He fathered 7 daughters and 14 sons. He
married
Daisy Etta Shields and had 15 children (my mother included). When she
died
at the young age of 45, he married her younger never-before married
sister
and had 6 more sons. I'm including a picture of my grandparents, Arthur
and
Daisy Etta Shields Mitchell."

Daniel spent last weekend in Shreveport, Louisiana doing some genealogy in the library there.  He found the following census information on Sarah A. Singleton who was the daughter of John W. Singleton.

1910 Texas Census for Montague County (E. D. 171, Vol. 105, sheet 64):

Arthur Funk---age 18---born in OK
Hattie Funk---sister---age 30---born in AR
Willie---sister---age 26---born in AR
Lizzie---sister---age 20---born ?

When Daniel got home, we went online to www.USGenWeb.org and found a listing of cemeteries for Montague County, TX.  We found the following information listed under the Oak Hill Cemetery (Part 2):

On Row 32:
Funk, P. L.---March 19, 1848---Sept. 9, 1918
Funk, Sallie Ann---Jan. 10, 1860---Nov. 13, 1919
Funk, Hattie E.---1885---1954
Funk, Arthur A.---1902---1975

On Row 31:
Funk, U. S.---Oct. 8,1915---May 29, 1926
Funk, Hannie Lee---1891---1956
Funk, Bessie Grace---Oct. 20, 1898---Oct. 26, 1979
Funk, Arthur Fay---1927---1973

Daniel and I think it is entirely po ssible that son Annie L. in the 1910 census above is really the above Hannie Lee Funk.  Hope the above information is helpful.

249. John Rapp, March 12 2000, Tawsha's Genealogy file.
I do not know the parents of Elizabeth Dickerson. There is a Solomon Dickerson who shows up several times in Barren records, but I don't know that he is her father. The parents of William Kays were almost certainly George and Lettice (Letty) Kays who had a farm on Skaggs Creek, originally in Green County, then split off to be part of Barren County, and finally (in 1820) split off to form the northwest corner of Monroe County KY. George paid the taxes on the farm from 1801 (as I remember) until 1821. Letty then paid the taxes through 1827. The Monroe County courthouse was burned in the 1860s and all records were lost that might have given proof of their children. The Barren County records are intact, and the marriage register and marriage bonds between 1805 and 1818 suggest (strongly) that these six (at least) were children of George and Letty: William who m Betsy Dickerson in 1805, Sarah who m Francis Harris in 1805, "Mary ("Polly") who m Joseph Howard in 1811, Elizabeth who m Warner Howser in 1816, Hamilton and John. Elizabeth's marriage bond was signed by Hamilton and William, with the note "George Kays grants his permission". Sarah's marriage bond had the note "consent George Kays". There was a Thomas M. Kay who m Peggy McKey 20 Oct 1805. I don't know whether that is our family.
Much of the above (except for a photocopy of William and Betsy's marriage bond) I have gotten from other people or from published sources. There was a family named "Hays" that lived close to the Kays. Eventually (in the 20th century) one of the Hays ended up owning George Kays farm. Some people reading the handwriting of the court clerks and others have read "Kays" as "Hays". But I believe the above information is reliable.
Several people are very interested in "where did George and Letty come from and who were their parents", but there is no proof or strong evidence known at this time. Probably they came from PA. There were a number of George Kays living there, and one of them married Letty Hamilton in York County in 1778, but this marriage has not been connected to any Kays or Hamilton family as yet." Zion Cemetery--Mine Creek Township, Hempstead County Arkansas:

Zion Cemetery can be reached from Highway 24 East from the county line, turning right about two miles, then south about one and one-half miles on a county road. The map location is Section 34, Township 9 South, Range 26 West. It is described in a deed from C. M. and Josie Lewis to the Deacons of the Zion Baptist Church. Hempstead County Deed Book 204, page 43. Jan. 1, 1913.

In 1857, Elijah and Elizabeth Carey made a Deed of Gift of a parcel of land in which two acres were to be used for a Missionary Baptist Church and neighborhood school with the privileges of other Christain Sects preaching there when not in use by the Missionary Baptist, reserving to the church the privilege of continuing protracted meetings without disturbance of the school. .. witnesses, J. R. H. Cummings and William Bateman. Hempstead County Deed Book N, page 443. John Bush Robins and wife joined the church in 1860, he was llicensed to preach in 1864, ordained in 1866 and became the first regular pastor..

When the church was organized, a Presbytery consisting of Elders Don Cocchran of County Line Church and Elijah Carey of Ozan Church met and after a sermon, the principles of the Red River Association were adopted. A Church Covenat was agreed to by Brothers and Sisters desiring to be organized; William Craig with a letter from upper Duncaries Creek, SC; Robert Dillard from Pleasant Grove, Hempstead County; C. Clark from Friendship, AL; Brother W. Webb from GA; together with Jane Bateman, Jane Ludwell, Milly Singleton and Sister Morris were recieved by vouchers. By letter; Mary Thomas, Francis Carey and Elizabeth Carey.

After prayer the Presbytery extended to said Brothers and Sisters the right hand of fellowship, declaring them a Church of Christ according to gospel orders to be known as Zion Baptist Church, April 12, 1857.

This took place in a log cabin on the Terrel Lewis place. Tim Freel, a descendant who looks after the cemetery, believes that the original church burned many, many years ago. A new church building for Zion Missionary Baptist Church and Friennndship Lodge 519 was constructed down the road from the cemetery on an acre of land donated by Noble Rad Lewis and wife on Nov. 8, 1895. Hempstead County Deed Book 32, page 357.
256. The 1880 Mortality Schedule for Arkansas shows Elijah Cary, age 86 having
died in Hempstead Co in June of that year. (Appears to be a little conflict
on age since he shows to be 62 in the 1860 census.)
257. A bio from the May 30,1912 Baptist Advance, under Elder Elijah Carey states:
"I knew this brother when I was a boy. He lived in Hempstead Co., but had
come from Pike County (AR). He was a blacksmith by trade, and I used to go
to his shop to get work done. He worked for a living and preached for
souls. He in some degree got both as the reward of his faith and labor, and
died in the Zion Church which he had organized, and is buried there."
258. "The first book of minutes from the Mt. Zion church.
The minutes show an organization meeting on April 21, 1859, preaching by
Elder Carey and receiving by letter Elder Elijah Carey from the Ozan church
( a few miles north of Zion Church). In June of 1859, Elder Carey was chosen
as pastor. Zion Church is about 4-5 mile east of Nashville, AR, in the north
west corner of Hempstead Co." Quote from Rex Carey--Carey researcher.

Oad Pemberton and Wanna Mae Wingfield were my grandparents. They had
two
children Neil Ray Pemberton (my father) and Barbara Ann Pemberton. My
dad,
Neil passed away in February 1986. Barbara is married, with 2 children
and
still living in Stockton, California. I would like to know any
information
you might have on my Grandfather, Oad Pemberton. He didn't know
anything
other than his Father's name, Ray Pemberton. Also, Wanna Mae's given
name
was Wonnie Mae. She changed it because she thought it sounded strange.
Also,
she told me that her mother's name was Elizabeth, not Sarah. Please let
me
know if you have any clarification on this.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Pemberton

These are notes sent to me by Daniel Singleton. A Singleton researcher.

"This is the same family as the 1850 Census of Mississippi. RICHARD could have remarried of Tempe could have been a nickname. The ages are near the same and the family above was in Mississippi in 1850. The birthplace of the parents is confusing. According to the 1880 census, JOHN WILLIAM SINGLETON's parents are from North Carolina and Georgia. I believe that RICHARD SINGLETON is JOHN WILLIAM'S father.

John Farley told me in 1984 that JOHN WILLIAM SINGLETON, GEORGE SINGLEOTN AND MARTIN were kin but he didn't know how they were related."

358. I remember Rachel very well. My grandma Gearldine Brinkley fixed her hair for years. she always wore it in an updo which took a long time to fix. A few times she would wear it loose. She was always nice to me she would give me candy etc. one time I remember I was buying a doll and she gave me some money so I would have enough to buy it.

Adjutant General's Office, War Department NO 1618725 dated Feb. 11, 1910
"The records show tha James H. Coker, private, Company C., 36th Regiment Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, was enlisted March 22, 1862, and was discharged October 27, 1862, at Camp Bee, Texas, on account of disability.

Taken from "Some Coker Cemetery History" part 2- Sept 1998 by Bob Battaglia
"James Harrison Coker, son of Joseph and Malinda Coker, was born Oct. 22, 1827 in TN. He died 1892 and is buried at the Coker Cemetery along with his first wife Sarah Jane Gann. They were married in Cherokee Co., TX Sept 13, 1850. James Harrison was a teacher, a lay preacher and a farmer. He also did legal papers for friends. He taught in the Coker School and some of his grandchildren were in his classes. he was described as a quiet and gentle man, who wore a black frock-tail coat, and walked bent forward with his hands folded behind him. He was strict, it was said. His wife, Sarah Gann, died in 1870 at age 39. Tradition has it that she made a good home for her family and left her heritage in her children. They had nine children. One story handed down about James Harrison deals with Indians. He was approached by an Indian asking for a gallon of syrup. James refused, having only one gallon to last all winter. This angered the Indian and that night a group of warriors approached the cabin and spent the night making noise and threats. The frightened family stayed up all night. The menfolk standing guard and the women cutting gun wadding. At dawn the Indians left without further trouble. Sarah was said to be scared of all Indians from there on."

"Mrs. Minnis was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Toberman; she was born In Pendleton County, VA, April 14, 1827. When 8 years of age she came to Illinois with her parents. Later they moved to Iowa, where they remained 5 years, after which they came to Carrollton. This was in 1845, the subject of this sketch then being 18 years of age. The following year she was united in marriage to William New, who died the following year. Of this union one child was born.
December 11, 1849, she was married to James H. Minnis. In 1869 or 1870, Mr. and Mrs. Minnis moved to Trotter township and settled on a farm, living there continuously until her death. When a young girl Mrs. Minnis was converted and united with the Southern Methodist church. Her long Christian life was one of usefulness and good cheer, for she practiced in her daily life the religion she professed. She was an affectionate wife and a kind and Indulgent mother. For a half dozen years she had been very frail, but this was no bar to a woman of her strong will. However, on Febuary 1, when stricken with pneumonia, her family became alarmed, but in a few days she apparently gained the mastery over the disease and began to mend. Later there was a relapse, and from that time she sank steadily. She realized Wednesday that death was very near, but calmly she awaited the end. Fully conscious to within a few hours of the end, she expressed her satisfaction and declared that "all was well " and with these words as her last, the light went out."
389. John Toberman was born in Virginia in the year Washington died. He lived to be ninety years old and was a pioneer in Indiana, Iowa and Missouri. His father, Henry Toberman, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He served under both Washington and Wayne and received a bayonet wound at the capture of Stony Point. He enlisted at the beginning of the war and served seven years, until its close.
390. From Carroll County MO history book, quote,
"Frank Ernest Minnis was born in Carrollton, Carroll Co, MO, and was educated in the public schools of his native town. After the family moved to the country he assisted his father with the work on the farm until attaining his majority. He engaged in agriculture on his own responsibility and now owns one of the best improved farms in the county (1913). Mr. Minnis is one of the influential Democrats of the county, having held a number of important offices. He served as trustee of Trotter TWP for twelve years and was judge of the County Court from the Western district for two terms of two years each. It was during his term of office that the present handsome Court House was built. In all positions of public trust, Mr. Minnis looked to the interest of the people he served and was an honored and popular official. In 1885 he was married to Joanna P. Smith, born in Boone Center, OH, daughter of Jacob and Susan (Shride) Smith, both of Piqua Co, OH. "

Mary New (1860)
File No. C R. 090,508.79

State of North Carolina Court of Equity
Stokes County Fall Term, 1860

To the honorable, the Judge of the said Court,
The petition of John F. New. John F. New, administrator of Mary New, dec'd, James P. New, Mary New and Matilda who intermarried with Wyatt Hart respectfully showeth unto your Honor, that Mary New, widow of George L. New, late of this County, died intestate, sometime in April, 1860, leaving her surviving the following children and heirs at law, to wit; John F. New, James P. New, Mary New and Matilda Hart, your petitioners; and also David New, who resides in the state of Missouri and who is herein made a defendant; William New, who lived in Missouri but who died leaving an only child, John William New, an infant under twenty-one years of age and without a guardian, who is herein made a defendant, and for whom your petitioners ask that a guardian be appointed; Nancy, who married George Cloud and lived in the State of Alabama, but died leaving her surviving seven children, to wit: Columbus Cloud, Mary Ann who intermarried with F. J. Gililand, George L. Cloud, Rachel who intermarried with James Ridge, Jennie Cloud, Susan Cloud, and William Cloud, the latter three of whom are infants, under the age of twenty-one years and without guardians, for whom your petitioners ask that guardians be appointed and whom they herein make defendants; and Martha, who intermarried with Woody Burge, and lived in Missouri, but who died leaving the following children, to wit: John William Burge and Nancy Burge, who are of the age of twenty-one years, and Richard Burge, Calvin Burge, Mary Burge, George D. Burge, Martha H. Burge, Woody C. Burge, and Matilda C. Burge, infants under the age of twenty-one years and without guardians, for whom your petitioners ask that guardians be appointed, and whom they herein make defendants, upon whom her real and personal estate descendants, between them to be equally divided, as tenants in common, each of its petitioners, John F. New, James P. New, Mary New and Wyatt Hart and wife, Matilda being entitled to one-eighth thereof, David New one-eighth thereof, the infant defendant, John William New, one-eighth , the seven children of Nancy Cloud each one-seventh of one-eighth, and the nine children of Martha Burge each one-ninth of one-eighth thereof, which said defendants having refused and still do refuse to join your petitioners in this prayer for the sale of this intestate Martha's real and personal property.
Your petitioners further show, that the said intestate at the time of her death was seized of a tract of land, in fee simple, in the County of Stokes, North Carolina, on the broad branch of Peter's Creek, containing forty-nine acres or thereabouts, and your petitioners further show that the said intestate was possessed of and held as her own right two negro slaves named Sarah and Ruth; and your petitioner, John F. New, administrator as aforesaid, respectfully showeth that he is the administrator of Mary New, dec'd, and that there is a sufficiency of other property belonging to the intestate to pay all her debts and liabilities without the said slaves, and that her administrator consents to the sale of said slaves.
Your petitioners further show that they desire to have partitions of said negro slaves and said land made amongst them, according to their and the defendant's respective rights and interests therein, but that owing to the number of the said slaves and to the size of the said tract of land, the number of the parties interested, the nature and quality of the soil, and other causes, it is impossible that actual partition thereof can be made without serious injury to the parties interested. To the end, therefore, that the said defendants may answer this premise that said land and slaves may, by a decree of this Honorable Court, be sold on such terms as your Honor shall deem just and reasonable, and that the proceeds of said sale may be divided among your petitioners and the said defendants, according to their respective interests in said land and negro slaves, and may be paid to or secured for them respectively, according to law and the course of this Court. May it please your Honor to order publication to be made as to the said David New, John William New, Columbus Cloud, Mary Ann Gililand, George L. Cloud, Rachel Ridge, Jennie Cloud, Susan Cloud, William Cloud, John William Burge, Nancy Burge, Richard Burge, Calvin Burge, Mary Burge, George D. Burge, Martha H. Burge, Woody C. Burge and Matilda C. Burge, who reside beyond the limits of this state, notifying them of the filing of this petition, and directing them to appear, answer or demur, and stand to abide by and perform such orders and decrees as this Court may make in this . And your petitioners are duty bound, with privy.
