Lammetje
Probasco
NOTES: Also found as Lammertje.
Some older sources state the Lammetje was the second of four wives
to Jan, a confusion first published in the Somerset County
Historical Quarterly. The error may have occurred due to the
number of Jans in the family, and the various spellings of Lammetje
which are found. A thorough search by Edward Vanarsdale, of West
Hempstead, New York, leaving "no stone unturned," shows
that Lammetje was the only known wife of Jan van Arsdale. Jan's
will, naming patterns, and baptismal records all support Edward's
findings.

NOTES: Macy, "Juriaen
Probasco's Place of Origin," New York Genealogical and
Biblographical Record," Volume 125 Number 4 (October
1994), wherein Juriaen is found abourd the ship Peartree,
arriving in New Netherland 1654. He stated, 17 June 1654, that
he was from Breslau, Silesia, giving his name as Jurrien Probatski.
This was after his evacuation from Brazil following the Portuguese
takeover of the Dutch colony there. The evacuees were transported
back to Holland, whence many of them chose to immigrate again,
to New Netherland. If Juriaen were from Spain or elsewhere, as
has often been speculated, it is unlikely he would have named
Breslau as his place of origin. Finding Juriaen on the Peartree
also lays to rest the myth that he was on the same ship as Dominus
Polhemus, which was waylaid by pirates.
Most likely Juriaen was
a part of the Dutch colony at Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, and
most likely that is where all the children were baptized. Some
have concluded without proof that Dominus Polhemus performed the
baptisms.
