Four generations of Claffey Men in Washington County Pennsylvania


WilliamClaffey Sr, my great grandfather, was born in 1836,Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Mounts McDaniel, daughter of Andrew and Eliza Mounts McDaniel. During the Civil War, William served as Corporal with 100th Pa Volunteer Regiment, known as "Roundheads". His father Thomas and paternal Grandparents, James and Jane Claffey all came from Longford County, Ireland in 1817. William Claffey died 1901 and is buried in Washington Cemetery. Two brothers, David and James also served in the Civil War.

William Claffey Jr, my grandfather was born June 23, 1874 in Washington Pa.
He lived his entire life in West End Washington Pa, married Mary Arabelle Miller, daughter of Joseph Allison Miller and Sara Elizabeth Burwell Miller. During his lifetime William Jr. worked as a Glass Bottle Blower at the Hazel Atlas Glass Plant #2, operated a small candy store in West end. I'm told that he was also responsible for the building of Eighth Ward Playground in early 1920's. He died May 31, 1930 and is buried in Washington Cemetery.

Joseph Harold "BUS" Claffey, my father, was middle son of 5, born May 25, 1903 in Washington, PA, to William Claffey Jr. and Mary B Miller Claffey. He married Doris Katherine Perry, daughter Samuel Tipton Perry and Nora Tabor Perry. He (like his father) worked at Hazel Atlas Glass Plant #2, and as a drummer and sometime singer with several small dance bands during 1930's & 40's. He died April 23, 1976 and like his father & grandfather is buried in Washington Cemetery.

Edwin Arthur 'Art' Claffey, my younger brother was born April 13, 1931, in Washington County, Pennsylvania to Doris Perry and Joseph Harold 'Bus' Claffey. He graduated from Washington High School in 1950, while there playing in school band. He continued musical interest in military band of Pa National Gaurd and served in Germany during Korean Conflict. On July 31, 1953, he married Laura Mae Briggs, who survives along with two children and four grandchildren. He moved his family to Richmond Va. about 1967, then three years later moved on to Texas. He died January 21, 1997 in Houston, Texas and is buried there in Harris County.
