IONIA COUNTY CEMETERIES
The Michigan Cemetery Atlas lists 55
cemeteries in the county of Ionia. Some are tiny family plots and others are new, modern
final resting places. The majority of these cemeteries have been transcribed and are
available for your research.
The Master Cemetery Database for Ionia County,
Michigan now holds the names, death dates, etc. of
over 32,058 individuals.
Berlin Township
- Alderman (Alleman/Schnabel) Cemetery
is located in Sec. 36, off State Road/M-66 in Ionia near the I-96 overpass. There are 26
burials from 1859 to 1920 transcribed for this cemetery.
- Balcom Cemetery is located in
Section 36, on North Tuttle Road, Ionia. This is a very large cemetery with 2094
transcribed burials. Burials are from the mid 1800s to the present. This cemetery
was last read in the late 1970s.
- Letts Cemetery is located in Section
13, on Peck Lake Road, Ionia. There are 312 transcribed burials for this cemetery.
- Ionia County Infirmary is located
in Section 34, on North Riverside Drive. The land is now part of the Ionia Recreation
Area. This cemetery is no longer used. There is a large stone with a plaque on it that
lists the names of those people buried there. There are 36 transcribed burials for this
little cemetery..
Boston
Township
- Saranac Cemetery is located in Sections 1 and 12, on David
Highway in Saranac. Conversion from written record to computer database is in
progress
- South Boston Cemetery is located in Section 20 on Grand River
Avenue and Kyser Rd. in Saranac. Conversion from written record to computer
database is in progress.
- White (Toles) Cemetery is located in
Section 3 on Centerline Road in Saranac. There are 101 transcribed burials for this
cemetery.
Campbell
Township
- Clarksville Cemetery is located
in Section 15 on Nash and Peddler Lake Roads in Clarksville. There are 1444 burials
transcribed for this cemetery. The burials are from the early 1800s to the present.
The cemetery was last transcribed in the mid 1970s.
Danby
Township
- Danby Township Cemetery is located in
Section 28 on Charlotte Highway in Mulliken. The burials in this cemetery are from the
early 1800s to the present. The cemetery was last transcribed in the mid
1970s. There are 1486 burials transcribed for this cemetery.
Easton
Township
- Easton Cemetery is located in
Section 8 on Johnson Road in Ionia. This cemetery holds burials from the early 1800s
to the present. There are 638 burials transcribed. The cemetery was last walked for
transcription in 1974.
- Oakhill Cemetery is located in Section
24 on Yeomans Street in Ionia. This cemetery is Ionias first cemetery. Many of Ionia
Countys founders are buried here. Conversion of written record to computer database
is in progress
Ionia
Township
- Highland Park Cemetery is located
in Section 16 on E. Main and Prairie Creek Roads in Ionia. This huge cemetery hold the
burials of over 3000 people. Transcription for 2971 burials. This cemetery was last walked
for transcription in 1974.
- Sunset Memorial Gardens is located in Section 31 on S. State
Road/M-66 in Ionia. This cemetery is a new cemetery. The cemetery sextons are Howard and
Luann Curtiss; 5800 E. Davison, Detroit, Michigan 48212
- Tuttle Cemetery is located in
Section 32 on Kelsey and Tuttle Roads in Ionia. This cemetery has 899 transcribed burials.
Keene
Township
- Marble Cemetery is located in
Section 17 on Richmond and Marble Roads in Belding. There are 236 transcribed burials.
Lyons
Township
- Muir Cemetery is located in Section 18
on Bluewater Highway in Muir. There are 914 transcribed burials
- Pewamo Cemetery is located in
Section 14 on Pewamo Road in Pewamo. there are 153 transcribed burials
North
Plains Township
- North Plains Cemetery is located in
Section 31 on Olmstead and Germain Roads in Hubbardston. Last transcribed in 1973.
Conversion of transcriptions from written record to computer database format are in
progress.
- Woodward Cemetery is located
in Section 15 on Borden Road in Hubbardston ( last burial in 1860) This cemetery is a tiny
abandoned site. There are three known headstones.
Odessa
Township
- Lakeside (Lakewood) Cemetery is
located in Section 34 on Cemetery Road in Lake Odessa. This is a huge cemetery with 5,145
transcribed burials.
Orange
Township
- Steel (Steele) Cemetery is located in Section 20 on Peck Lake
and Kelsey Roads
Orleans
Township
- Greenop (Orleans/Hurd) Cemetery is
located in Sections 15 and 16 on Orleans Road in Orleans. This cemetery was transcribed
from the sextons records in 1973. There are 588 burials transcribed. There is also a
Hurd Cemetery Annex for which records were transcribed in 1973. There are 252 burials
transcribed.
- Green Cemetery is located in Section
17 on Johnson Road in Orleans (about 3 miles east of the city of Belding. Burials are
listed from the mid-1800s thru 1965. 443 burials have been transcribed.
- Higbee (Old Higbee) Cemetery is
located in Section 36 on Peterson Road. Burials are from the early 1840s. 141
burials have been transcribed
Otisco
Township
- Free Methodist (Old Belding) is
located in Section 14 on e. Belding Road/M-44 in Belding These gravestones were last
copies in August of 1963. many of the stones are broken and many inscriptions are not
readable. Originally this cemetery belonged to a Mr. William Wilson, and Mr. Wilsons
first wife is buried there. When he remarried and decided to return to New York to live,
the cemetery was given to the church. This is the final resting place for approximately
400 people. Earliest burials were in the early 1800s and the last in 1957.
- Smyrna Cemetery is located in
Section 21 on Whites Bridge Road in Smyrna - 346 transcribed burials
- Belding Cemetery is located in Section 14 on E. Belding
Road/M-44 in Belding
- Otisco Cemetery is located in
Section 9 on Whites Bridge and Ellis Roads in Cooks Corners. 848 burials have been
transcribed
- Rest Haven Memory Gardens is located in Section 4 on North
Storey Highway/M-91 in Belding
- St. Josephs Cemetery
is located in Section 14 on Zahm Road in Belding. The last reading was done in May of 1974
with 369 transcribed burials
- St. Marys Cemetery is located in
Section 33 and 34 on Krupp Road in Smyrna. There are 373 transcribed burials
Portland
Township
- Pioneer (Maple Corners) Cemetery is located in Section 2 off
Maple Road (Site obliterated)
- Portland City Cemetery is located in Section 33 on Bridge
Street in Portland. Conversion from written record to computer database is in
progress at this time.
- Brown Grave is located in Section 9 on David Highway in
Portland
- Catholic Cemetery is located in Section 28 in Portland. The
site is now obliterated. Reinterred in Portland Cemetery in 1900
- Goodwin Cemetery is located in Section 2 on Maple Road in
Portland. Some 50 to 100 graves were bulldozed about 1950. Some reburials in Portland
Cemetery
- Union (Musser) Cemetery is located in Section 19 on Keefer
Highway in Portland (last burial 1900)
Ronald
Township
- Snows Cemetery is located in Section
20 on Stedman Road in Shiloh. This cemetery is no longer active. There are 33 burials
transcribed for this cemetery
- Woodard Lake Cemetery is located in
Section 18 on Woodard Road in Palo. There are 186 burials transcribed.
- Palo Cemetery is located in
Section 2 on Judville Road in Palo. This cemetery is a very large cemetery with 1358
transcribed burials. It was last transcribed in 1961.
Sebewa
Township
- Ingalls Grave is located in Section 25 on Keefer Road in
Sunfield. Jonothan Ingalls, soldier of the Revolutionary War, is buried in a single
roadside grave. The grave is maintained by Sebewa Township. The marker is engraved:
Jonathon Ingalls, Soldier of the Revolution 1762-1843. The marker was erected in 1921 by
Stevens Thompson Mason Charter D.A.R.
- Reeder Cemetery is located in Section 32 on Tupper Lake and
Kimmel Roads in Sunfield. Bodies were moved to the East Sebewa Cemetery. Site obliterated
- Showerman Graves are located in Section 21 (site contains the
two graves of Lucius Showermans children)
- Treece Children Graves are located in Section 3
- Unknown Grave is located in Section 16

as well as an index sorted by individual name.
