BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A year after Joseph and Mary's marriage in 1864, Joseph's sister, Ada OLIVER, married Mary's brother, William WILSON.

Joseph and Mary's second son, James, died in January 1870, aged 1 year and 10 months. Joseph and his three surviving children emigrated to New South Wales sometime in the 1880s. I don't know yet whether his wife, Mary, emigrated as well, or whether she had died. They settled in the coal mining area of Newcastle, NSW, and Mary (the daughter) later moved to Sydney where she married John Robert HAMILTON in 1896. Thomas was in Coolgardie, Western Australia, in June 1914 when his sister Mary died. James (mark II) married Caroline Amelia POWELL in 1895 in Stockton, NSW. Joseph (the father) lived in Carrington (a suburb of Newcastle) until his death in 1900, where his brothers, Butson and Dawson OLIVER, and his nephew James OLIVER (son of his brother John OLIVER) also stayed.
