I have a marriage license for a Hannah PARROTT to a Alexander J. ?. They were married at the Church Of Christ by J. M Judson on June 30, 1853. Can anyone tell me where this church is in Huron County and does the church still have the records of the marriage ?
Ken Shute Look Up Results - I could find only two references to a "Church of Christ" in our Huron County, Ohio publications. One is in Fairfield Township; the other is in Greenwich Township. The one in Fairfield Township can be found in the History of the Firelands, by W.W. Williams, 1879 on page 357 under the heading of "Second Advent Church." In describing the Second Advent Church (apparently synonymous with Church of Christ in this context ?), the article states that it was located "a mile and a quarter east of the center (of the village of North Fairfield) upon lot 37, section 2." Continuing, the article states, "The church was organized in June 1855. The constituent members of the Church of Christ in Fairfield and vicinity were (names 12 persons). The first minister of this church was Rev. John M. Judson." (This Rev. John M. Judson would seem to be the same J.M. Judson whom you cite as officiating at the marriage of Hannah PARROTT.) (Further note- Our Atlas of Huron County, Ohio, 1873 actually shows "Second Advent Ch" as located on lot 31 (not 37), secton 2, of Fairfield Township. The small square denoting the location of this church appears within the property bounds of lot 31, 100 acres, owned by an I.P. Wicks.) The one in Greenwich Township can be found in two articles written by Henry Timmins in his Just Like Old Times series, published originally by the Norwalk Reflector. One article is titled "100 Plus Years of History at Greenwich" and is on page 95 of his Book III. The other is titled "Greenwich Was a Wild Place in its Youth" and appears on page 62 of Book IV. Between the two articles, the pertinent information is- The farmhouse of Hiram Townsend still stands next to the Church of Christ and is used as its parsonage . It was built about 1845, and faces Townsend Street.
Benjamin MILL and family is listed in the 1840 Huron Co., census in Clarksfield Twp., ag 40-50. In the same 1840 census my gr-gr-grandfather, Johann Heinrich MILL b 1799 Hamilton Twp., Northampton/Monroe Co., PA and wf Elisabeth KISER/KAISER, (who migrated from Upper Mt. Bethel Twp, Northampton Co., PA.. abt 1834) is listed in New Haven Twp. Interestingly enough, Johann Heinrich MILL b 1799 had an uncle named Benjamin MILL b abt 1785 in Northampton Co. but I cannot prove that this is the same Benjamin. Can you send me off on some tangent to prove that this was Uncle Ben?
Ken Shute Lookup Results-- Sorry, but I was unable to find any definite link between the Benjamin MILL in the 1840 Clarksfield, Huron County, Ohio Census, and your Heinrich (Henry) MILL in the New Haven, Huron County, Ohio Census of the same year. I checked our Huron County, Ohio publications and the internet. In poking around the internet, however, I did find some references which you might be interested in, if you don't already have them. All of these can be found in Ancestry.com. In the Index to the 1840 U.S. Federal Census, there is one other another Benjamin MILL listed. I am interested in any or all information whatsoever regarding the RUNYAN family of New London, Ohio. I am probably one of the last direct descendants on my mothers side from Nathaniel RUNYAN. I do know that my great, great grandmother was a granddaughter of Nathaniel RUNYAN (her name was Emma LOVE (b1859/d.1962 and went to Wisconsin, then Kansas and then Oklahoma Territory. We would have been the western branch of the family. I have a long detailed letter in my possession from Mr. George F. RUNYAN, who I believe would have been Emma's first cousin, written in 1926 re his connections with the "western" relatives. Since Emma was born in Sparta, Wisconsin, her mother was Nathaniel's daughter and was born and grew up in New London Ohio in the 1850s. I believe this is Alvira or Elvira. My great grandmothers middle name was Elvira, however I cannot be sure this was the daughter as there is no one left alive who remembers her name! I am especially interested in the New London RUNYAN G.A.R. Post#127. This information is important to me as I do know that Emma had an Uncle Edwin who was killed during the war and an Uncle Martin (or Mart) RUNYAN who lost a leg at the Battle of Chickamauga or Battle of Murfreesboro Tennessee in 1863. Also another Uncle named Myron, I believe. I am attempting to acquire membership in the Sons of the Union and I need the pertinent genealogical proof of direct or collateral descent from a Union soldier or soldiers. As my great grandmother Bessie (Emma's daughter) told me stories of her Uncle Mart (great uncle) and other Ohio relatives fighting for the Union during the Civil War, I have always been fascinated and these good people unfortunately have passed on. She said that Emma made several visits to New London with her mother during and after the Civil War and remembered how New London was draped in black after Lincoln's death, how the women wore wide hoop skirts and how they would have to sit in them, etc. Any information that anyone in Huron County or elsewhere can provide about the RUNYAN family and their lives in New London would be greatly appreciated. I have quite a few pictures of the New London family for identification. Thanks again for listening to my ramble and if anyone has information, thanks again even more
I have been looking for my ancestor Frank (or Franz) SCHENCK for a Long time. I finally found him in the 1880 census. He is listed in Sherman Township in the household of Thaddeus and Christina MARSH. Frank is 76 yrs old and retired at this time. As he had several children living in the area. I am curious why he is living with another family. I think Frank may have died about 1884. Does anybody on the list have any information on Thaddeus and Christina MARSH? Maybe her maiden name? Also, I have searched the Huron County Cemetery Inscription Book and can't find Frank anywhere. Any other ideas? Thaddeus and Christina MARSH aren't listed in there either.
Ken Shute Look Up Results - I could find no footprints of Frank SCHENCK (born abt. 1804) in any of our Huron County, Ohio publications. The closest I could come was a reference to a Frank SCHENK (1835-1898), and his wife Margaret BALL (1843-1910) in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book. I had better luck with Thaddeus and Christina MARSH (also found as "MARCH"). In the 1880 Census you cite, Thaddeus MARSH is listed as a farmer, and Frank SCHENCK is listed as a retired farmer. In our Huron County, Ohio Atlas of 1873, I find a "T. MARSH" owning 12 acres of land in Sherman Township. However, I could find no record of a Frank SCHENCK in either our Plat Book of 1845, or our Atlas of 1873. I also find Thaddeus MARSH (1839-1922) and Christina MARSH (1846-1929) in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions Book, but listed as "MARCH." They have an infant son named Walter F. I was unable to find either Thaddeus or Christina MARSH/MARCH in the web site for the Ohio Death Certificate Index, or in the R.B. Hayes Obituary Index. Frank SCHENCK did not appear in our Death Index for Huron County, 1867-1908, or in the R.B. Hayes Obit Index. Our Marriages of Huron County, Ohio, by Scheuer Publications, shows "Thalteus" MARCH married Christina HEITZMAN 12 Feb 1867. An Individual Record in FamilySearch.org shows Thaddeus MARCH was born 9 Aug 1839 in Bremgarten, Baden and died 22 Dec 1922 in Peru Township, Huron County, OH. His spouse was Christina HEITZMANN whom he married 12 Feb 1867 in St. Joseph's Church, Monroeville, OH. Christina HEITZMANN was born 8 Feb 1846 in Baden, and died 18 Dec 1929 in Norwalk, OH. This Individual Record was submitted by: "Dieter Schimmelpfennig, Steinsieken 14 24811 Owschlag." Dieter also gives the URL for his genealogical site as- "http://www.genealogie-schimmelpfennig.de."
If someone on the list has the cemetery book and would do a lookup on page 831 for Vera L. SMITH and Chas. E. SMITH, I would appreciate it. I am also curious about p. 269 which also has a Chas. E. SMITH, although I realize that his was not an uncommon name and there could well be two different individuals with that name buried in Huron County.

Is anyone on the list familiar with the HAYES family of New Haven, Huron County? They are listed in the 1860 Census for Huron County, township, New Haven. My interest comes from that census list. There is a domestic listed, age 17 at the time, Mary J. FRANCIS from Ireland. I was curious to know if perhaps Mr. John or Mrs. Ellen HAYES was related to her. She seems to appear from nowhere immigrating (by herself??) during the 1850s from Ireland. She marries William CARR of Ripley in 1861.
I found your list of Cemetery Inscriptions for Huron County on-line and have found 5 generations of my ancestors there. I am looking to find out what cemeteries they are buried at. I have the names and page numbers. I live in Kettering, Ohio (Dayton) and am coming to Norwalk for a short visit. Any help would be most appreciated. Ora LEE page 630 & 684; Leonard J. LEE - 684; Nelson BAILEY - 467; Sarah BAILEY - 467; Jane EMERSON - 467; Reuban EMERSON - 467; Orrin CARTWRIGHT - 469; Lydia Hunter CARTWRIGHT - 469; Milo CARTWRIGHT - 469; Susan DeForest CARTWRIGHT - 469. I am also looking for any information on a Julius LEE (Father of Leonard J. LEE) and his wife. Leonard J. LEE is my great-grandfather and we have absolutely no information on him or his family prior to marrying Ora BAILEY.
Charlotte Fulfer Lookup Results-- We have similar relatives. My great grandmother Charlotte Ann BAILEY is the daughter of Nelson and Sarah BAILEY. I can not find my notes yet. Charlotte Ann married William PHILLIPS and they had 11 children. They had a house in Collins, where all 11 children were born and two of them lived until they died.
I have probate from Ohio and notation from St. Sebastians Church (in german) of death of Jacob BAKER who died 25 Sept 1886 in the home of his daughter and son-in-law Jacob FRISH. The church does not have any records of where they are buried.I cannot find where he or his wife (Magdalene) are buried. I would be extremely grateful of any help in this matter and I can share Jacob's probate record if anyone can use it in their research. I also have land records where Jacob bought 100 acres in Huron Co., OH.
Ken Shute Lookup Results-- The closest I could come to the burial location for your Jacob BAKER was in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetry Inscriptions book, but I'm afraid it might be a "leaner" and not a "ringer:" St. Sebastian Catholic Cemetery, Sherman Township. Page 839. Section B-- Row 12. 5 Jacob BECKER d. 2 Oct 1886 age 26. The age at death is questionable because of the underline. The year of death (1886) and the church affiliation (St. Sebastian) matches what you give, but the date of death (2 Oct) is about a week off from what you give (25 Sep). I find in queries from the BAKER forum in genforum.genealogy.com that BAECKER, BECKER and BAKKER are variations on the surname Baker. I was unable to find a burial location for Magdalene, Jacob's wife. In case you don't already have it, I found the following BAKER family in our 1870 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio which might be yours They appear on census page 570A for Sherman Township. Read first name, age, and place of birth. Jacob, 64, Bav(aria), James, 27, PA, John, 1, OH, Magdalen, 64, Bav(aria), Rosa, 25, Bav(aria).
