English Interests
Although I am still actively collecting information on all U.S. branches of the
Elam family, my personal research activities are turning in the direction of
England. If anyone else out there is actively working on the English branch of the
family, I would like to know. If I can get a handle on what has already been done
and what is ongoing, maybe we can organize some sort of coordinated "attack" and
reduce the amount of duplicated efforts.
I have recently corresponded with Malcolm Elam of Huddersfield, who says that
the only known concentration of Elams in the UK is now in Leeds, rather than
Huddersfield (where they appear to have been in the 1600s). He also mentioned
that he and his brother were contacted by an Edgar Elam about 25 years ago who
was working on compiling a complete family tree. Unfortunately, as best we can tell,
Edgar seems no longer to be with us. I have written to several Elams in his former
town in hopes that one of them may be related to Edgar and know the whereabouts
of his work.
Malcolm and I are of the opinion that the easiest (and possibly the only) way to
get back much farther than the late 1500s will be through family Bible and other
such records. With that in mind, I am going to attempt to systematically contact
every English Elam I can find. If anyone is interested in helping, I will be glad to
share part of my mailing list. Any other suggestions or English research pointers
will be greatly appreciated.
