The Elam Exchange
(Created by Janet Elam Crowley)
Exchanges Submitted for April thru July 1998
In the January 1930 issue of the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical
Magazine, I found a reference to Elam genealogies found in the Edward Pleasants
VALENTINE Papers (Abstracts of Records in the Local and General Archives
of Virginia Relating to the Families of Allen, Bacon, Ballard, Batchelder,
Blouet, Brassieur (Brashear), Cary, Crenshaw, Dabney, Exum, Ferris, Fontaine,
Gray, Hardy, Isham (Henrico County), Jordan, Langston, Lyddal, Mann, Mosby,
Palmer, Pasteur, Pleasants, Povall, Randolph, Satterwhite, Scott, Smith
(the family of Francis Smith of Hanover County), Valentine, Waddy, Watts,
Winston, Wormack, Woodson) published in four volumes (price $30.00 per
set) by The Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA, distributed by Genealogical
Bureau of Virginia, P.O. Box 244, Richmond, VA. The volumes are supposedly
well indexed. Has anyone seen these and checked on what they have on Elam?

DAVID, IVA, JIMMIE,

My father was THURMAN O'dean Elam and mother was Lavine. Dad's father was
Arthor Elam and his mother was Emily Pearl (CARTER) Elam. This is my first
experience at this but I am looking for information about my family past.
If anyone can help me I would be grateful. Dad's brothers and sisters are:
WILLIAM, MATTIE, IVA, JIMMIE, LEON, MARGARET, JOHNNIE, QUENTIN, BEATRICE
and MAXINE. Dad's father ARTHUR possibly had or has half brothers and sister,
DAVID, MYRTLE, and TED. I have two brothers, JOE Elam and TOM Elam. Thanks
for this opportunity and the help if it's out there.
Looking for the parents of a KESIAH or KEZIAH Elam who reportedly married
a James Franklin NUNNALLY. She may have been born in Virginia and died
in Elbert Co, GA in 1810. Her husband was born 3 Jan 1760 in Virginia and
died 2 Dec 1838 in Elbert Co GA. Any information about her or her family
would be appreciated.
I am seeking information on an ancestor by the name of RICHARD Elam who
supposedly came to the US with his two brothers, SAMUEL Elam and JOHN A.
Elam from Scotland(?) sometime before 1780. About 1780, Richard's son LLEWELLYN
(aka LOU Allen, LUALLEN, etc.) was born in Campbell Co. VA. Llewellyn married
Mary (Polly) EANES, in Campbell Co. VA, 15 Feb 1806. They moved to Butler
Co. KY before 1820 and then on to Marshall Co. IL about 1825. We believe
Llewellyn died in Marshall Co. IL about 1835. Any information would be
greatly appreciated.
Hi wondering if anyone knows more about a PEGGY Elam 1772-1845 married
to a Seth WOOLDRIDGE May 7, 1793 in Chesterfield County, Va.. I believe
Peggy was the daughter of DANIEL Elam. Thanks
My father, JAMES Willis Elam, was born December 5, 1893 (death: 1951).
I know very little about his family, only that he had numerous brothers
and sisters, all of whom are now deceased, I believe. His mother was a
HARGRAVES or HARGREAVES, I think. He married my mother, Mary Jessie Elam,
in Missouri, which is where most of his family lived. I don't know how
to proceed with my search.
My great-grandfather was ALFORD Richard Elam (everyone called him Dick).
I was told he was born in Hamilton Co., TN but don't know for certain.
He was born 2-19-1849 and died 12-8-1911 in Hunt Co., TX. He was married
to Harriet Elizabeth RUNNION (born 1-1-1852 in Hamilton Co., TN and died
12-14-1916 in Hunt Co., TX) He shows on Fannin Co. land grants in 1879
and the 1880 census for Fannin Co., TX. I have no info on parents or siblings.
LDS researcher said father was RICHARD Elam and mother was Barbara ENGLAR.
Can anyone help?
Seeking to trace family tree of Elam's residing in Conroe, TX. Family tracked
to pre-Civil War family of FRANCIS Marion Elam, a southern civil war veteran
who moved to TX from one of southern states prior to war and fought for
Terry's Texas Rangers. M. F. Elam was listed in pre-war census as a female
child family member due to feminine sound of name. In fact, for all historians
who know better, he was undoubtedly named after American Revolution hero
Gen. Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox) who served under George Washington
in the War of Independence. This name was common in the south, particularly
South Carolina where Marion's troops sought to honor him after the war
by naming children and places after him. We haven't been able to trace
M. F. Elam's family much beyond 1850s. It may be apocryphal, but Francis
Marion Elam was supposedly known for the large number of horses he had
shot out from under during the war. Any of this sound familiar. Would love
to hear from you.
I'm looking for ancestral information for SARAH Oliver Elam (b. 1806 in
VA) who married Ransom SEAY c. 1825 in SC/GA. She had a brother named WILLIS.
Elam. In the 1870's, she came to Texas with her daughter Martha Elizabeth
SEAY KITE SMITH. She lived with her son Alexander Marion Seay in Mithchell
CO, TX. She died in Mitchell CO, TX and is buried in Nocona, TX. I believe
her mother's maiden name was Vaughn. Family lore is that the Vaughn connection
is Cherokee. Any information would be helpful.
Looking for HIRAM Elam or his father or both. First seen in Bibb County
Ala ... 1826 ... believed either from Ten or Ken. May be spelled HYRAM
but he signed his papers in Ala with Hiram.
