I am looking for information on SUSAN (SUSANNAH) Elam, b Dec 14 1778; d abt 1826 in Russell (now Wise) Co VA. She was married to Oliver I. POWERS, Mar 19 1805 in Russell Co (now Wise) Co VA. Their children were: Jeremiah, Lucy, Harmon and Rueben H. I have recently seen a suggestion that my Susannah was the daughter of GILBERT Elam III and Susannah HILL. Listed children of Gilbert and Susannah are: WILLIAM, FRANCISNA, BENJAMIN, WALTER (WALTUS), SUSANNAH and JEREMIAH. Does anyone know any details of this family? Thanks.
I have seen assertions, but not documentation, that Phebe, the wife of JOEL Elam is the daughter of William HILL and Phebe BRANCH. Here is the circumstantial evidence I am aware of. Does anyone have anything else to add?

Evidence that the wife of Joel Elam, Phebe was the daughter of Phebe Branch:
1. The will of William Hill, probated in Mechlenberg co., VA. makes a substantial bequest to "JAMES Elam, the son of Joel and Phebe Elam." The will does not state the relationship, if any, between William Hill and Phebe Elam, but there is some basis for theorizing that Phebe was William's daughter. Otherwise, why would William Hill make such a bequest if it were not to a close relative?
2. The will of Mary Branch, probated in Chesterfield co, VA names Phebe Hill as one of her daughters. Chesterfield co. is near Mechlenberg co. Thus, we know that Mary's daughter Phebe married a man named Hill. If we assume that William Hill had a daughter named Phebe, it would make him a strong possible candidate for being the husband of Phebe Branch, and it points to the possibility that Phebe Hill Elam was named after her mother, Phebe Branch Hill. Also, these two women were one generation apart in their ages.
3. There is other background circumstantial evidence that shows connections between the Elam and Branch families. In 1638, Christopher Branch paid for the transportation of ROBERT Elam from England to VA. Christopher Branch was the great grandfather of Phebe Branch. Robert Elam most certainly was related to Joel Elam, and may have been his great-grandfather. Further, there are documented intermarriages between the Elam and Branch families.

MATILDA C. Elam, born in 1822 in Virginia. Married Eli DILES in Lawrence County, Kentucky on Sept. 17, 1846. Probably died in Arkansas.
I am trying to research my own family, unrelated to Elam. However, I was just in an antique shop in Ojai, CA and I saw the most wonderful scrapbook - wooden bound - of an Elam family in the Ojai/Ventura area, with old photos from the 1920-1930 time period, along with obits, news articles, old valentines, etc. Somebody has to have this. There were several pictures of a AUSTIN Elam. It would be a crime for the right family not to have this treasure. It's located at the Treasures of Ojai, (805) 646-2852, and I think they want $25.00 for it. If you have come across the name Austin Elam in your research, can you please forward this information to the right people??? Thanks.

I'm looking for information on the family of MARTHA Elam b. abt. 1832. She was the daughter of LORENZO and Sarah VICKERS Elam. Martha married Moses SHAFFER. Would love information on her children, and the families of her brother(s) JAMES H. and WILLIAM Elam. Thanks for anything you can send my way!
My ggg grandfather was CHARLES Elam of Macon Co., Mo. I believe that he was the son of ARMSTEAD Elam and Elizabeth RHODES. Charles was born July 4, 1843 and died Feb. 24,1905 and is buried in White Oak cemetery, where many other Elam's are buried. This family came from Vi. I am trying to put this family together. Arms was murdered when Charles was a small boy and JEMINA and EDMUND showed up on the census records as living with Charles and his mother. I believe that these, Edmund and Jemina, were Arms parents. To this day many of the Elam's that came from Vi. live in the Macon Co., area. Old family stories say that the Elam's came from Vi. and all lived around Elam River. Does this sound familiar? I can not find this on any map. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

I am searching for the parents of HIRAM Elam of Bibb Co., AL. My wife is descended from him as follows: Hiram > JOHN Monroe (moved to Lauderdale Co. MS bet. 1880 and 1900) > JOHN Henry (moved to Clarke Co., MS about 1910) > LEILA Pearl md. James Arthur BRASHIER > James Harold Brashier > Jimmye Ruth Brashier, my wife. I have found Hiram's 1840 and 1850 Bibb Co. AL Census records, but no earlier Elams in Bibb Co.
JOHN Henderson Elam (1863-1938) and wife, Marion Hortense HAYNES (Elam) (1866-1940) of Holmes and other counties in Miss.; Fannin & Wichita Counties in Texas. Their son was FRANK Haynes Elam (my grandfather) b. Aug. 4, 1898 prob. in Kosiusco, Miss. and d. Sept. 27, 1967 in Dallas, Tx. In 1921 in Dallas, he married Nan Oriel Victoria MCGHEE (my grandmother) (b. Oct. 25, 1901 in Vernon, Tx and d. Feb 27, 1991 in Houston). Both are buried in Dallas. Their daughter, NAN Alice Elam (Phillips) Hamby is my mother, b. in Wichita Falls, Tx and her first husband was my birth father, Wesley Harvey PHILLIPS, 1923-1961. They mar. in Dallas, Tx. in 1945. Nan Alice Elam (Phillips) Hamby's second marriage was to Jamie Earl HAMBY, 1931-1987. They married in San Antonio, Tx in Aug., 1957. My name is Katherine Alice Phillips Hamby Clark, and I am married to Michael Duane CLARK. We have one son, Christopher Michael Clark. Other children of Nan Alice Elam: Nancy Carol (Phillips) Hamby (from first marriage). of 2nd mar.: James Franklin Hamby mar. Vickie MALONEY. They have 2 children, Jimmy and Kaitlyn. Of 2nd mar.: Michele Jamie Hamby mar. David FEUERBORN. Also child of Jamie Earl Hamby's first marriage: Brenda Claire Hamby mar. David MACE. MARY L. Elam married James PRATER on October 20, 1836 in or about McMinnville, TN (Cannon County) where James was born on March 4, 1816. (From family bible record). I am interested in where she fit into the Elam family. James Prater is my great great grandfather. They had two children who survived birth, a daughter Minerva and a son George Washington Prater born February 5, 1850, in Springfield Missouri.
