The Elam Exchange
(Created by Janet Elam Crowley)
Exchanges Submitted for April thru June 1999
I am looking for infromation on my grandmother HELEN Elam, married to Oden
MCBRIDE. She was born in Fulton Co, Kewanee. Ill and is buried there at
the Pacific View Cemetery. She died Sept 21, 1936, she was born about 1900.
If any of this ring a bell please contact me.
JOHN Elam came from VA to Logan/Warren Co KY by 1795. by 1812 He was in
Bedford Co. TN with WILLIAM Elam, Sr., William Elam, Jr., and JESSE Elam.
My ancestor JAMES H. Elam was son of either John or William Elam, Sr. James
H. Elam b. c1800 KY lived Warren Co. TN many years. Can you help??
I am very interested in finding out more about my lineage, where my family
comes from and how they got here. I was shocked, however, to see that most
of the Elam pictures on the website are of white people. From what I could
see, all of the members of the Elam side of my family were/are black, and
I have not heard of any white people on that side of my family. I thought
perhaps the web page might give me a little bit more information about
where my family is from, how we got the name and what it means, but I am
even more confused than ever. I do know that the majority of the Elam's
in my family are from Rock Hill and Chester, SC. My father is DAVID Elam,
son of ROOSEVELT and Sally Mae Elam. I know my father's aunt was ESTHER,
but was married and I am unsure of her married name. Esther died in the
late eighties, but lived in Chester at the time of her death. Any other
information that you think might be connected to my inquiries is greatly
appreciated. Thanks so much.

on Sunday, June 6, 1999 includes these names: ALEXANDER
H, BURWELL, CEATON,
COFFEY, DAVIS,
DELIAH D, GILBERT,
HATCHER, KEETON,
LOCKETT, ROBERT,
SEATON, SURILDA
J
After pouring over Wayne County, KY records, I post the following possible
lineage for my line:
GILBERT Elam (s/o ROBERT Elam) who d 1784 Chesterfield Co, VA mentions
a young son named BURWELL in his will. A sale of property by the heirs
of Richard LOCKETT, 1805 Chesterfield Co, VA mentions Mabel Elam, wife
of Burwell. Burwell Elam is on the 1810 Wayne County, KY census. Wayne
Co is in SE KY on the TN line. A sale of property of Burwell Elam in 1815
mentions a son Burwell Elam. (Note Burwell is spelled numerous ways in
the records.) In 1827 Burwell Elam marries Elizabeth W. DAVIS, d/o James
S. Davis and Polly. This may be a 2nd marriage for him. By first wife Elizabeth
"Betsy" COFFEY, dec'd, he seems to have 2 children, SURILDA Jane and ALEXANDER
Hamilton Elam. In 1848, DELIAH Davis Elam marries Joseph Arthur SEATON
(CEATON/KEETON) and Burwell Elam is on bond. Does anyone have any more
on this line to this point? Are their any other records to establish descent?
A partial line in brief: Robert Elam
..Ann Elam and Gilbert Elam
....Gilbert Elam, Jr and Mary HATCHER
Robert Elam (s/o Gilbert Elam, Jr.)
..Gilbert Elam (IV?) and Susannah
....Burwell Elam and Mabel Lockett
......Burwell Elam and Elizabeth W. Davis
........Delilah Davis Elam and Joseph Arthur Seaton (my 3greats grandparents)
E-mail me if you have anything else on this line, or if you perceive
errors in my suggested line. Thanks.
I am researching my connection to SARAH E. Elam. Born Aug 19, 1859 Died
about 1900 Paducah, Kentucky. Daughter of JAMES T. Elam and Susan E. GRIFFIN.
Sarah had a son HENRY Lee Elam - possibly illegitimate. I'm searching for
Henry Lee's father or proof that he was born out of wedlock or any information
regarding this.
I am looking for information about the ancestors of ANNIE Elam. We believe
she is the daughter of HODIJAH Elam and Mary DAVENPORT. We have the names
of her sister also. Does anyone have any information that may help up in
our research.
I have been researching my Elam tree. While visiting my husband's grave
in Stokes Cemetery in Bartlesville, OK, I discovered some Elams there that
are unfamiliar to me. Does anyone recognize these names?
TERRESSA Elam, wife of JH Elam, died Feb 27 1888, age of 24 years,
6 months, 28 days RICHARD A. Elam, died Feb 28 1888, age of 66 years, 5
months, 5 days. Infant Elam, son of Terressa Elam, died June 19 1886.
The Elam Page has been of immeasurable benefit to me and my family. I have
found five new people to add to the family tree; and gone two generations
back from leads and the help of some very nice people who read The Elam
Page and corresponded with me. But now it's time to move backwards ! and
find the parents of BEVERLY Elam (male) born circa 1780 ?? probably in
Powhatan or Chesterfield county VA. I feel like I'm really getting close
to one of the Gilbert's, Robert's or Joel's. Any help will be appreciated
and a special Thanks to Janet Crowley for hunting down Beverly.
I have WILLIAM Elam who married Judith? as my 6th ggrandfather. I have
no dates or places but I think they were from VA. William and Judith's
daughter FRANCES is my ancestor. She married Peter WORD in Charlotte,VA
on May 7, 1782. There were 3 other children that I know of. MARTIN, JOHN,
and ELIZABETH. Does anyone have any other information that would help me
fill in the blanks? Would anyone know who Judith was, or who William's
parents were, birthdates, etc? I would really appreciate any info. And
will also share what little I have on this family. Thank you.
