William, Dedham, a physician, or apothecary, probably both, arrived 1654, had William, b. about 1646; Mary; Robert, about 1649; Jonathan, 26 May 1653; Rachel; Hannah, 27 Sep 1660; and Ebenezer, 24 Nov 1663, who probably died young, as he is not named in the will of his father 15 Oct 1683. He was a lieutenant 1673 of the town’s company and freeman 1677. Possibly the bookseller mentioned by Thomas in his Hist. II. 411, certainly the representative for Springfield 1669, and he died at Boston 18 Mar 1687, aged about 65. His wife, Margaret had died 28 Sep 1678. Of the daughters, Mary married 5 Nov 1666 James Tisdale; Rachel married 22 May 1676, William Sumner; and Hannah married the same day, Benjamin Dyer.2

Lieutenant William Avery, M.D., of Dedham and Boston, Massachusetts; b. 1622, in England; d. 18 March, 1686, and his tombstone stands in King’s Chapel burying ground, Boston; came to Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1650, bringing his wife Margaret, who died 28 September, 1678, and three children from Barkham County, Berkshire, England. He is designated as Sergeant in 1669 and was a Deputy to the General Court, 1669, from Springfield; Lieutenant of Dedham County, 1673; Member of Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company; he was the earliest educated physician known to have taken up his life in Dedham; married (secondly) Mrs. Mary (Woodmansey) Tapping, daughter of Robert (probably) Woodmansey.4, Vol. I; pgs. 31-34
