HOME SURNAME LIST NAME INDEX GEDCOM FILE EMAIL US | The Noble Family of Chalmers of GadgirthThese pages outline the history of the 'noble' family of CHALMERS of GADGIRTH, as perceived by Alexander Nisbet in his appendix to "A System of Heraldry" first published in 1816. Much of Nisbet's findings are very debatable, as there are differences in his Chalmers family of Vol I and that of Volume II in his two volume set, the second volume obviously written some time after volume one. The <unknown01 - 05> generations in the following pages are guesswork on my part, as Nisbet states: "By the various accidents that hath happened to this ancient family, as well as many others have had the same fate, their first and most ancient charters of their estates are lost, at least are amissing, which occassions a hiatus in the line and succession of the family"- in the period from 1160 until 1296 (136 years) Nisbet has no references, and encompasses a period in which five or six generations could have lived through. Two other references also offer no clue as to this intervening period. My thanks to Alison Durry of Port Chalmers, New Zealand, who kindly send the extract from Nisbet Table of Contents
