John, I have only read your history of the Chalmers surname so far but found it really interesting. I am of the Aberdeenshire/Banffshire Chalmers and my Family Tree can be found at http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/decfam/CHALMERS/d0/i0000240.htm#i240 I read somewhere that the reason why the Chalmers are part of the Cameron Clan is because one of the Camerons fled to France to escape persecution and adopted the alias de la Chambre. He then returned to Scotland later in his life and raised a family. This information may be useful unfortunately I can't remember the source I wish you success with your website Kind Regards Peter

It may well be a source of linking some families together that at first glance may not appear connected. It may help to inspire us to dig deeper. I have the Book of the Barclay dynasties in which very old Chalmers families are mentioned. However,as I am not ready to include them now I will do so later. My father's mother was born Margaret Stuart CHALMERS. Her father Thomas Galloway CHALMERS was born in Scotland in 1870. He married Rachel SHAW. They emigrated to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) at the end of the 1800s. M S Chalmers was born around 1905 in S Rhodesia. In 1905 there was a James CHALMERS living at 175 Duke Street, Dennistown, Glasgow. I believe James may have been one of T G Chalmers' brothers. In 1905 James was married with one child. I would be interested in obtaining details of the Chalmers from this family branch from before or after T G Chalmers' death. There were also Valarie and Cynthia Chalmers living in Bedford UK, born early 1900s, who appear to be part of the same family branch, as well as someone called Annie who lived in Canada and was possibly a sister of T G Chalmers. If anyone is related and can help with any info this would be much appreciated.

I have just discovered your web page. I saw your notice on the Chalmers name board at Ancestry.com. I am impressed. Your page looks great. I am descended from Mary Chalmers christened in 1790 in Markinch, Fife. Her parents were David Chalmers and Jannet Robertson. She married George Donaldson on the 9th of Nov. 1815. Their marriage bann was in the Birse Parish Records. She came to Canada as a widow, we think. She came with one of her sons, Charles born 18 June 1836 in Banffshire. Mary Chalmers is my 3xgreat grandmother.

A really useful site for me a born & bred southerner who is looking for information and background on her Chalmers relatives. I have traced my family back from my G-G-Grandfather, Andrew Chalmers, born 6th May 1856 in Eassie & Nevay, to his parents, James Chalmers & Ann Davidson who were married the day after Andrew was born. The family moved from Scotland to Northamtonshire, and then on to Merstham/Gatton in Surrey, where James worked as a Farm Bailiff. Andrew was a master Blacksmith and his brother John a Coachbuilder. As far as I can make out the family stayed in Surrey. James & Ann are buried in Gatton churchyard. Andrew is buried in Merstham churchyard. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has information on the Chalmers family in Angus.

While I had wandered by your homepage before, I didn't discover until a couple of days ago that I'm descended from the Chalmers of Gadgirth (thank you so much for displaying their arms on your homepage). James Chalmers (1766-1826), son of Ronald Chalmers and Lady Janet Hamilton of Gadgirth in Ayrshire, emigrated to Halifax County, Virginia, in the late 1700s. I'm not sure his grandson, James Ronald Chalmers, had ever heard of James Chalmers of Gadgirth's boldness towards Mary of Guise (queen regent and mother of Mary, Queen of Scots). But I'm sure the Northern forces during the Civil War were very familar with the boldness of Confederate General Chalmers. Keep up the good work! Quid mon Deo juvante

Hi John, like many others have already said - excellent site. I have only just been pointed at it today, and in truth am not much of a geneaologist, but it has sparked an interest my ancestors. Trying to find out more about our great grandmother, Helen Chalmers, married Hugh Stewart of Hurkledale c.1890, Dumfries. Her son (James) was brought up with his Chalmers cousins as she appears to have died quite young. We have letters from his cousin Marshal Chalmers an officer who was serving in the 2nd world war. We have a leather bound Victorian book about Dr Chalmers who somewhere along the line is related to us. Thanks for the great website. I hope many contribute as we can only be of help if we communicate what we know. So far, what I know about my little branch of the Chalmers family is this: My grandfather, William, came to Australia, landing in Sydney from the "Austral" in 1888. He was accompanied by his mother Jane (nee Reid) and his siblings Elizabeth, Ellen, George and Jane. Their father James had apparently arrived some time before, but I can find no record. They settled in or near Cessnock NSW where James was a coalminer. James and Jane both died at Cessnock. James was apparently the son of James Chalmers and Helen Haddow (married 1850) and Jane belonged to Willliam Reid and Elizabeth Walker. The relevant areas of Scotland seem to be Limerigg, Polmont, Stirling and New Monkland, Lanark. Does this ring a bell with anyone? If so, I'd love to hear from you.

Evening to all those Chalmers's out there. I have just done a research on the Chalmers. I found out that my Grand Father who was a black man name Willie K. Chalmers from Halifax, Va had a white father who owned slaves who inturn had my Great Grand mother whos name was Matha Woods.Martha was a Black slave from some where in Afica who work his land some where in 1860's...My Grand father Willie K Chalmers had two wife's. The first was Earlee Boman from Clover,VA , whom he had three girls and one son. He's second wife was Mary J. Shipp who was born Feb, 23, 1900 and died June 1976. together Willie and Mary had 13 children.I am the product of Willie and Mary Chalmers who is my Grandparents from my dads side of the family. I am looking to trace the roots of my Grandfather Robert Felix Chalmers from Rhodesia because in the 1970's an article appeared in the newspaper appealing for his name and the name of my father Hudson Anthony Chalmers regarding an inheritance or estate to be claimed, and because this was during the war years my father did nothing about it, as he thought it would be an expensive business for him to sort out however I would be very interested to find out just what it was and trace my Scottish roots.

Looking for relatives of my paternal grandfather Edward Dempsey Chalmers born April 10 1911....always thought he was born in Scotland but recently found out it was actually Ireland but his family were Scottish and lived in Glasgow Scotland. He died in 1944 in wwII so we don't have much info to go on...his parents were a David Chalmers and I think mother was Mary Campbell ...not sure though. There is sketchy information in the few papers we have. He had 5 or so brothers one named Duncan and a sister named Jean I think.....he came to Canada and later was in the military. Any info from anyone thinking they may be related would be wonderful.

Great website! I've traced my CHALMERS ancestry back to James CHALMERS and Agnes [Ann] PARKER, whose son, James Williamson CHALMERS, was born in Aug 1835 at Perth, Scotland, though not baptised until a few years later on 26 Dec 1841 at Lethendy & Kinloch, Perthshire. I'm still trying to find a marriage (or indeed ANYTHING!) for James CHALMERS senior and Agnes PARKER. All I know is that James and Agnes are purported to have died before 1861, and that James was a Land Factor. James Williamson CHALMERS married Janet "Jessie" BISSET at Broughty Ferry, Angus in 1861 - they had at least six children, and the family lived at Dundee.

My husband, John Parker’s, grandmother was Jeanne Chalmers, born in c.1898 in Usal, CA . She was married to Marryat F. Parker June 3, 1920 in Oakland. John’s dad, Marryat F. Would welcome any news on James Chalmers (my father) born Maryhill, Glasgow 1920. His Father was Albert Chalmers, born 1875. James enlisted in Royal Marines 1939-45. Arrived in Wales 1964 and married my mother 1965 (died 91). The story is that Albert had an affair with a waitress but brought James back to live in the family home thus his wife left to live in Canada. Any info welcome especially given the war years as landed on D Day.

my Chalmers family comes from balnacriag an cult according to my family tree written by a relative in london in the late 60's. my grandfather (Colin Chalmers) married a maid in the house, my grandmother, sometime between the first an the second world war an was banished to canada do to the english class system at the time. my grandfathers brother was already here in canada for the same thing, his name was Eric Chalmers. my grandfathers dad's name was William Bryce Chalmers which seems to be quite a popular name in my family tree. there was a lady by the name of gemmell in kingslynn UK that contacted us here in canada. She was doing a family tree, an found us here. she must of done some real good research, because my grandfather an his brother were forgotten,an erased from the family because they married beneath the family. what i understand my branch of the family were tea merchants an were very wealthy at the time, but my great grandfather got TB an made some bad in! vestments an lost the money, my great grandfather (William Bryce Chalmers)was still alive in 1939 to my understanding. by the way Angela Chalmers the olympic medal winner for canada in spain is my cousin. i dug up the letter that Mrs Shiela Gemmell wrote to my dad in Canada. it saids my dads grandfather name was William Bryce Chalmers, an he married Alice Jane Hall on Feb 22 1872 an they had 9 kids an there names are, Graham, Marjorie, Eric, Colin,died early 1950's age around 72(my grandfather an my dads dad) Jean, Phillis, Alan,(lived at 135 holland park ave,london when he was alive an wrote the family tree we have here in Canada he died in the 1980's i think) an the last child was Alexander Douglas (Mrs Shiela Gemmell father) Willian Bryce father was Rev Dr William Chalmers DD, principal at presbyterian College in London an there was a church built for him too, called Marylebone,(i think thats how its spelled) an he married Emily Bryce, which gives us a connection to the marguis of Montrose an Robert the Bruce through her, the wedding is said to be known as Bonnie Jean of mugdoc(i think its how it is spelled) castle, one of the castles belonging to Graham of Montrose! . the Rev father was William Chalmers MA, MD HEI CS, he was the one of the first if not the first surgeon in the employment of the honourable East India Company. there is a couple nic names of some of our relatives to, like buffalo Chalmers an explorer in Africa, an tamato Chalmers it saids in my family tree that he was eaten by cannabil's but doesn't give there given names.
