Boyds of Castleblaney, Monaghan, Northern Ireland to Lisbon, NY. My gr gr grandfather, John Boyd, was married to ______ Campbell, and lived somewhere in Ireland, presumably in North Ireland. They had six children, three of which come over to Northern New York, 2 girls (Mary & Jane) probably came in the 1840's, or earlier, with a brother William (my grgrandfather born in 1807/17) coming in the early 1850s. William's first wife died in Ireland after having a son David, born about 1837. William then married Mary Jane Thompson and had 2 sons William Henry, born in 1853, and Robert, born in Dec. 1855. In 1856 Mary Jane died and was buried in the town of Lisbon, NY. William Henry grew up and married Jennie McConnell around 1880. Between then and 1900 they had seven children - the middle one, Esmond Arthur, being the only son & with six sisters, was my father. Robert died young in 1872, and David was, seemingly, lost track of. William died in 1884 and W. Henry died in 1920, both being buried there in Lisbon, where I grew up. Going back to Mary and Jane Boyd, they seemingly married after coming over to the Lisbon area. Jane is supposed to have married Andrew Megans, but that is all we know about her. Mary married William Hall, and the 1860 census shows them having seven children between the ages of 18 yrs. and 2 mos., all having been born in NY. ("The World Book of Boyds" shows that a Mary and Jane Boyd were "Passengers to New Brunswick: The Custom House...", the New Brunswick Genealogical Sty. 1987. 483p.. -arriving in St. John, New Brunswick in 1834, - on pp.92 & 138. Whether they are the same ones, who knows?) My dad's oldest sister claimed that she understood that most/all of our ancestors, Boyds and others (McConnells, Chapmans, McLane/McLeans, & Thompsons), came from the same area of Ireland. My gr gr grandmother, Nancy McLean or McLane, born in 1835, according to her obituary in 1923, was born in Castleblayney, Ireland, which is now in County Monaghan. She came over in 1849 with 2 aunts and Uncle William Chapman, to New York City. Not too long after that Nancy married RobertMcConnell (from Ireland) there and about a year later moved to northern NY. Her aunts and uncle had gone to northern NY, also, and her Aunt Margaret married William Boyd and helped raise his children. Sometime along there Nancy's mother, JaneMcLane or McLean, presumably a widow by then, came over with the rest of her several children. The Chapmans and McConnells, etc. all lived within a couple of miles of the Boyds. Then the McConnell family, except for Jennie Boyd, moved to Nebraska in the early-mid 1890's. Jennie died in Mar. 1902, from gallstones. Anyway, there are quite a few of my ancestors - parents, aunts and uncles, etc. buried in that one Campbell Cemetery in the town of Lisbon. (Although Nancy McConnell's obit states that she was born of Scottish parents, the census for 1860-1880 in Lisbon show all those families were born in Ireland as were all their parents.) My dad was always very adamant about being Irish, not Scottish. Now I can see why.) I just wish I had asked a lot more questions when I was much younger!! He died in 1982 at 89 yrs. I do not know of any current relatives with the name of Boyd. My only brother, Arthur Boyd,
never married, so the Boyd name is dying out of this line. As much as I
have tried to find anything on these Boyds, and these other ancestors
in Ireland through the IGI, nothing has come up. I am now
wondering if there might be any parish records there in Castleblayney,
Monaghan, Ireland, that could help. The Boyds, and probably the others,
also, were Presbyterian. (I guess I need to check with the
Family History Library to see if those parish records are available.)
