Notes on Scottish Parish Records

SOURCE: The information posted here came from the Old Parish Records in Edinburgh, Scotland by way of an on-line search service. This is an excellent service; one which I would recommend to anyone trying to find Scots ancestors.

TIME PERIOD(S): These are not consistent but in general will cover a period from the late 1580s to 1854. Records after 1855 are available through the same on-line service.

PARENTS' NAMES: In general, mother's names were not listed in the early birth/christening records; however, I was astonished at the number of female names posted as the mother of a child. If they were cited in the search results, I included them here.

DUPLICATE RECORDS: In a few cases, I found marriages recorded in two different parishes. When I asked for an explanation on the Dumfries-Galloway mailing list, I received the following reply:

"When bride and groom were from different villages, the calling of Banns on three successive Sabbaths was to make public Proclamation of intent to wed in both of the relevant congregations. Gave a chance to jilted partners or pregnant girls, to make claim. And of course, it got in the way of bigamous contracts.

Sometimes the bairns were baptised in either parish. Often the first born would be baptised in mother's parish even if those later, allied to father's.

Allegiance to a congregation was not merely a matter of faith or piety. In those days of no taxes there were no pensions or other social services. You needed to know your own parish for it was there and nowhere else, that you were entitled to Charity. "

I stand indebted to Alistair (Alec) M. Cameron, Bundanoon, NSW, Australia for his informative response.
