Notes on Scottish Parish Records
"When bride and groom were from different villages, the calling of Banns on three successive Sabbaths was to make public Proclamation of intent to wed in both of the relevant congregations. Gave a chance to jilted partners or pregnant girls, to make claim. And of course, it got in the way of bigamous contracts.Sometimes the bairns were baptised in either parish. Often the first born would be baptised in mother's parish even if those later, allied to father's.
Allegiance to a congregation was not merely a matter of faith or piety. In those days of no taxes there were no pensions or other social services. You needed to know your own parish for it was there and nowhere else, that you were entitled to Charity. "
