From the "Lakers County Herald News," series, Early Files, 1898 - 1900, this amusing story about an encounter with a bear and a watermelon was recounted in 1985.

One day last week some "furiners" passed through Magnolia with a "bar" and a monkey.  Tom Walters, who works at Clopton's saw mill, had gone to the well for a jug of water [the jug belonging to John Robert Clopton].  The dancing of the bear and antics of the monkey was too much for Tom, so he left his jug and went to the show.  While he was gone someone stole his jug.  Tom, not to be outdone, went to Abney's store and got a large watermelon, thinking that would reconcile Clopton for the loss of the jug.  As he was returning to the mill he got to thinking so hard that in trying to imitate the actions of the bear he let his melon fall and made a total wreck of it.  The next man with a bear that passes Magnolia had better not let Tom Walters get at him or that bear will suffer!
