        187.  James²¹ Clopton, The Elder (William²⁰, Walter¹⁹, William¹⁸, Walter¹⁷, William¹⁶, William¹⁵, Walter¹⁴, William¹³, Richard¹², William¹¹, John¹⁰, William⁹, Thomas⁸, Walter⁷, William⁶, Walter⁵, William⁴, Walter³, William², Guillaume¹ Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born January 5, 1782 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Bef. June 20, 1850 in New Kent County, Virginia¹⁹⁹.  He married Martha Winfree August 5, 1807.  She was born July 15, 1789, and died December 24, 1848 in New Kent County, Virginia.  She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church, New Kent County²⁰⁰.

        Ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1818, Elder James served as the pastor of Charles City Baptist Church (now Emmaus Baptist Church) and served for 31 years.  He was also active in church work in the area between Richmond and Williamsburg.

 

TRIBUTE OF RESPECT

 

At a church meeting held at Emmaus church in the county of New Kent, on Saturday, the 18th of May, 1850, the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted:

 

        Whereas, it has pleased Almight God, in the ordering of his wise and mysterious providence, to remove from our midst our venerable and beloved pastor, Elder James CLOPTON; Therefore,

        1.     Resolved, That in this dispensation the church has lost one of its most devoted friends and most efficient and useful servants, and the county of New Kent one of its best, most valuable and respected citizens.

        2.     Resolved, That as a church, we will ever cherish in our memories the recollection of the long, ardaous, and disinterested labors of our beloved Pastor.

        3.     Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the records of this church, and a copy thereof be forward to the family of the deceased, with the expression of our siincere condolence with them in this sad and afflicting dispensation, and the high regard and estimation in which we hold the character and memory of the deceased.

        4.     Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the Religious Herald for publication.

On the night of the 24th

 

DIED, On the night of the 24th of December last, in the county of New Kent, Mrs. MARTHA CLOPTON, wife of Rev. James Clopton, in the 61st year of her age.  Sister Clopton had been for forty years a member of the Baptist church.  In all the relations of life, she manifested the sincerity of her profession.  As a minister's wife, she was a bright example; ever ready and willing to make any sacrifice to promote the usefulness of her husband.  As a mother, she was most affectioinate and tender.  As a mistress, kind and forbearing, almost to a fault.  As a neighbor, she was always ready to discharge the obligation imposed upon her by that relation.  The community in which she lived has sustained a severe loss in her death, and especially the church to which she belonged.  She ever felt a deep interest in the prosperity of Zion.  But a few weeks before her death, she remarded that the condition of the Church of Christ gave her more unhappiness than any thing else.  She could cheerfully give up a beloved son to go far hence to the Gentiles, that he might labor for the advancement of the Redeemer's kingdom; and when the melancoholy tidings of the sudden and unexpect death of that son rreached her ears, she could meekly bow her head in submission to the diviine will:  but when she thought of the low estate of Zion, her heart was troubled, and she could adopt the languate of the prophet, and say, "Oh that my head werre waters."  But now her prayers and her tears and all her sorrows have ceased, and we may say,

 

        "Dearest Sister, thou hast left, us -

        Here they loss we deeply feel;

        But 'tis God that hath bereft us -

        He can all our sorrows heal."

        483           iii.    Samuel Cornelius Clopton, Missionary to China, born January 7, 1816 in New Kent County, Virginia; died July 7, 1847 in Canton, China and buried there.  He was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church²⁰².  He married Keziah F. Turpin, of "Dove Hill" April 14, 1846 in "Dove Hill," Henrico County, Virginia by Elder J. O. Turpin²⁰³; born in Virginia, and was a member of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, New Kent County, Virginia.

 

                               ELDER S. C. CLOPTON.

 

               We this week have the painful duty to discharge of announcing the death of one of our missionaries, brother S. C. Clopton.  He died at Canton, China, on the 7th July, after an illness of ten days, leaving an afflicted widow and child.

               This is indeed a mournful bereavement.   In June, 1816, he left our city, buoyant with health, and fondly hoping that he might have the high privilege of proclaiming the Saviour he loved, as a sure refuge to the perishing heathen.  Young, ardent, long to be useful, blessed with a grand constitution, he might naturally have expected a long and useful career.  He was only permitted, however, to give for a brief space of the vast field before him, to survey the magnitute of the enterprise on which he was entering, and to feel the full responsibility of being a messenger of glad tidings to those countless millions, ere he is summoned to a higher and -?- sphere of enjoyment.  His sojornge amongst the Chinese had been too brief to permit him to acquire the language, and he therefore was debarred from the privilege of preaching Christ and him crucified to that  -?- nation; yet he was -?- engaged in preparing himself for this ardeous duty; and by his presence in their midst, he evinced an interest in their welfare, and a readiness to spend and be spent in their service.

               We sympathize with the Board and the Convention in this afflicting event.  Just entering on a new and responsible work, one of the few agents on whom they depended to carry out their plans, and give stately to their enterprise, is suddently and unexpectedly removed, and another -?- by -?-.  These are discouraging -?- well fitted to try our faith and love.  God has said that the heathen shall be given to his Son for an inheritance; and the promise must and will be fulfilled.  Adverse events are sometimes permitted to -?- -?- fidelity to the cause, and indeed a stronger -?????- the great Head of the Church.  Others -??????- efforts, yet have gloriously succeeded - The Hindus -?-, the Germans, the Greenland, the South Seas, had -?-their faith severely -?- by -?- disappointments yet they perserveared, and God bless their labors.  -????????- the strneth of the Lord go on, and that with increased Zeal.

               Our lamented brother was 31 years old.  He was born in New Kent, and was the third son of our esteemd brother Elder James Clopton.  The child of pious parents, he was brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and at an early age became a member of Emmaus church; of which his father was the pastor.  Feeling it his duty to devote himself to the ministry, he became a student in the Va. Baptist Seminary.  He subsequently entered Columbian College, of which he was a graduate.  On leaving that Institution, he accepted an apointment as teacher of the preparatory department of Richmond College.  Desitous to qualifying himself thoroughly for the work of the ministry, he resigned his office, and became a student in Newton Theological Institution.  When the unhappy separation was place[ed] betwixt the North and South, on the decision of the Boston Board, he, with some other Southern students, left that institution.

               In the interval betwext leaving that Institution and his acceptance as a missionary by the Board, he was actively engaged in preaching to different churches.  In the fall of 1815, he was accepted as a missionary, and by direction of the Board, he visited several churches and with a view to awaken a deeper interest in the -?- -?-

               A few weeks before he embarked he was united in marriage to sister Frances Turpin, a daughter of the late beloved pastor of Four Mile Creek church, in this county.

               Amiable in his deportment, and courteous in his intercourse with his fellow-men, as a man he was loved and esteemed.  Devotedly pious, and conspicuous for a fervent zeal, as a Christian, he won the confidence and esteem of all with whom he associated.  but his pilgrimage is ended.  Like the early dew, he vanished in the morning of life; yet it is our duty to bow submissively to the stroke, and say, Surely will not the Judge of all do that which is right.

        485            v.    John Christian Clopton, of Albemarle County, born December 16, 1819; died March 3, 1871 in Selina, Albemarle County, Virginia of paralysis of the brain.  He was a member of Free Union Baptist Church²⁰⁴.  He married Marietta Thompson January 29, 1846; died Aft. April 6, 1871 in Selina, Albemarle County, Virginia, probably²⁰⁵.

               Died on Friday, 3d of march, 1871, at Selina, Albemarle Co., Va., of paralysis of the brain, JOHN C. CLOPTON, in the 51st year of his age.  In early life  he embraced the hope of the gospel, andsoon identified himself with God's people, by joining the Baptist church.  He was vary anxious to become a minister of the gospel, but his early opportunities for acquiring an education haad been limited, and a feeble physical constitution disqualified him for the toil necessary for the pulpit.  He, however, devoted many years to the work of a colporter, and took great pleasure, not only in circulating religious books, tracts, ac., but in his travels aas colporter, seldom failed to speak of the importance of practical piety, exemplifying in his own life the blessedness of the Christian hope.  Many a word of consolation did he speak to the broken-hearted; and many a word of warning to the impre-?-tent.  He was a member of Free Union Baptist church, which took its name froom the house in which the church was constituted, which was ocupied alternately by ifferent denominations of Christians.

               To the extent of his capacity, Bro. C. sought to build up the interests of Zion; and the paastor and church at Free Union will long remember his ever watchful anxiety for the advancement of the cause.

               His widow, the daughter of Edmund Thompson, Esq., deceased, and granddaughter of Col. Robert Hill, formerly of Madison county, remains with a mother's and grand mother's, and husband's voice, all bidding her to follow them to the "better land."  May this, with all the bereavements she has been called to bear, be sanctified to her highest good.

        188.  Ann²¹ Clopton, of "Knotty Oak" (William²⁰, Walter¹⁹, William¹⁸, Walter¹⁷, William¹⁶, William¹⁵, Walter¹⁴, William¹³, Richard¹², William¹¹, John¹⁰, William⁹, Thomas⁸, Walter⁷, William⁶, Walter⁵, William⁴, Walter³, William², Guillaume¹ Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born 1797 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died October 6, 1833.  She married Isaac Otey, of "Knotty Oak", son of James Otey and Frances Graves.  He was born 1787 in New Kent County, Virginia.

        Following Ann's death in 1833, Issac married Ann Binns, the daughter of Daniel Binns and Ann K. Cooke, who was a daughter of William Cooke and Ann K. Chamberlayne.  By the second marriage there were two children, John O. Otey and Charles Anna Otey.  Isaac Otey and his second wife sought a legal separation, something that was almost unheard of at that time.  The second Mrs. Otey engaged the services of Richmond T. Lacy to serve as her attorney, and the separation was made legal.  She was given a home near Providence Forge as part of the settlement.  The Puritans did not have the corner on strict discipline and the early minute books of Emmaus Baptist Church clearly illustrates that the primary concern of the congregation was the punishment for a wide assortment of transgressions.  The church constitution called for a business meeting to be held on the Saturday preceding the third Sunday of each month and charges could be brought before the members.   An appointed committee would visit the member accused of violating one of the many, often trivial rules of conduct, and seek an explanation.  One offense viewed as grounds for excommunication was to simply not attend church on a regular basis, so it is easy to see why Issac got in hot water when the reason his wife left became common knowledge.  A committee composed of James Clopton, Pastor; Dr. Carter, James F. Gray, Ira Coles, E. Pollard, F. T. Crump, William Howle, A. S. Crowder, John O. (?) Clopton, Tazewell Pomfrey, James A. Oakley, J. F. Parkinson, and B. M. McKenzie rendered their report on the Saturday before 3rd Sunday, July 1840. "Upon investigation of and deliberation on Bro. Otey's case and upon his acknowledgement of error in having striked his wife with a switch with a confession of sorrow for the same The Church determined to retain him in fellowship."  (It should be pointed out that only males could vote.)

        498             i.    A.²² Perrin, born December 25, 1840 in Harrison County, Kentucky.  He married Mary E. Perrin 1868.

A. Perrin, lawyer, PO Cynthiana, was born Christmas Day 1840 in Harrison County, near Robinson Station, K.C.R. He is a son of Joseph and N.E. Baldwin Perrin, daughter of Jonah Baldwin of Springfield, Ohio. His father is a native of the county, a prosperous farmer, who still lives to enjoy the confidence of his neighbors, and the companionship of his faithful wife. The grandfather of our sketch was Josephus Perrin. He attended the common schools of the county until he had acquired the rudiments of a common English education, when he entered the Kentucky Military Institute from which he was graduated in the class of 1861. He then taught school for a year, when the War breaking out, he enlisted in Colonel E. F. Clay's Battalion of Confederate Calvary and was desperately wounded the very next day at the Battle of Cynthiana and was confined to his bed until the close of the war. He read law with W. W. Trimble and was admitted to the bar in 1868. He was elected County Attorney in August 1870 and re-elected in 1874. Served as Master Commissioner of the Harrison Circuit Court for ten years. In October 1881 Mr. Perrin renewed the publication of the Cynthiana Democrat, which has been suspended and of which he now the editor and proprietor. He was married in 1868 to Miss Mary E. Perrin, who died June 2, 1875. He is a member of the Presbyterian church and stands high in the estimation of those who know him.

A 1858 graduate of the University of South Carolina, and from the Medical College of Alabama at Mobile, Dr. Perrin served as Chief Surgeon of General Pillow's Division of Cavalry, during the Civil War.

                                                Following the war, he moved to California, as did his sister, Susan Perrin and her husband, Dr. George Francis Thornton, of "Thornhill."  He acquired large tracts of land throughout California and Arizona, including a 60,000 acre ranch in Fresno County.  He was instrumental in the construction of the upper San Joaquin Canal,  and became President of the Upper San Joaquin Irrigating Canal Company in 1880-1882.  He was also Director Ins. Railroad and Land Company.

Perrin was in the Confederate Calvary under Jeb Stuart and Wade Hampton during the Civil War.

On the day that General Abner Perrin was killed at Spottsylvania Court House General Lee mentioned only three men in his report at the end of the day.."The brave General Perrin was killed".

               James Madison Melton enlisted in Company D, 9th Alabama Battalion on February, 1863, shortly before his eighteenth birthday, and proceeded to Tullahoma, Tennessee where they were placed in General Clayton's Brigade and were in several small engagements, chiefly at Hoover's Gap.  In July of 1863 two additional companies were added and the 58th was formed.

               The 58th was consolidated with the 8th Tennessee under Colonel Bushrod Jones, placed in Bate's Brigade and they took part in the Battle of Chickamauga. On the first day of this great conflict, Bate's Brigade assisted in the capture of four pieces of artillery.  On the second day they were in the desperate charge which broke the enemy's line, losing 148 men out of 254 engaged in the battle. This regiment was one of the most distinguished a Chickamauga.

               United with the 32nd Alabama and placed in General Clayton's Brigade in November, 1863, they took part in the Chattanooga-Ringgold Campaign.  Out of 400 present at Missionary Ridge, they lost 250. The Regiment wintered at Dalton and accompanied the Army of Tennessee in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign, engaging in numerous battles and skirmishes.  They fought at Resaca, New Hope, and Kenesaw and lost more than 100 men either wounded or killed in ten days.

               Transferred to Holtzclaw's Brigade, they moved with Hood into Tennessee.  They were severely engaged at Columbia and took part in the terrible battles of Franklin and Nashville.   They then went with the Brigade to Mobile and were sent to assist General Gibson in his brilliant and heroic defense of Spanish Fort on March 31, 1865. They fought gallantly there and at Blakely.

               James Madison Melton appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War of Co. H, 32 and 58 Consolidated Ala. Regiment, Holtzclaw's Brigade, Confederate States Army, commanded by Capt. R. L. Wiggins, surrendered at Citronelle, Ala. by Lieut. Gen. R. Taylor, C.S. A., to Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby, U. S. A., May 4, 1865, and Paroled at Meridian, Miss., May 10, 1865.

               James never spoke much about his Civil War experience, however, his son Gordon G. Melton remembered a humorous story he heard his father tell about going up a hill in Chattanooga. "It seems that my father's Company thought that the Yankees were just over this hill, so they were heading up the hillside to go over and attack the Yankees.  As they got about halfway up the hill, huge boulders came tumbling down toward them.  They turned tail and started running back down.  Dad said there was a soldier about one hundred feet ahead of him wearing a long overcoat.  This overcoat was stretched out like a bird's wing, as the man ran trying to dodge the bullets that had begun to come their way.  Pa was trying to zigzag to keep out of the line of fire that was directed at the fellow with the coat on, but every time Pa zigzagged, so did the other fellow.

               Following their marriage James and Margaret lived on a farm, consisting of 160 acres, located at Wade , Alabama, between Argo and Springville in St. Clair County.  The farm came through Margaret, who inherited it from her father William "Bill" Presley.

               Located on the farm about 150 yards from the house was the Fairfield School, a one-room schoolhouse.  James and Margaret donated the school site and furnished considerable amount of the lumber and labor to build it.  School term was only four or five months during the fall and winter.  That was the only time that the children could be spared from the crops.

Melton of the state and county above named, for the affection and regard we have for schools and education in our vicinity have released and by this deed do convey unto the Trustee of Public schools and their successors in office of the fraction of part of Township 15 south Range 1 east in said county and State a lot of land near our residence on the public road leading from Springville and Trussville containing one acre more or less, the same being bounded as follows, commencing at a point on the East side of the Public road leading from Springville to Trussville. Sixty ft., south of where the North boundary line of the SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Sec. 14 Township 15 south Range l East, crosses the said public Road thence south parallel with said Public road 241 ft. to next corner, thence south east 209 ft. to next corner, thence North East parallel with said Public road 209 ft. to next corner thence North west 209 ft. to the beginning corner being a part of the South East 1/4 of SW 1/4of sec 14 Township 15 South Range 1 East containing one acre more or less,  The said Trustees and their successor in office, to have and to hold the same lands afore said, for school purposes forever.   In testimony  where  of we have unto set our hands and affix our seals this 25th day of December 1894.

               James and Margaret raised five sons and four daughters.  One son Gordon G. Melton mentioned in his memoirs that one of the most valuable things that he ever owned in his life was the good name that his parents passed on to him.

        He served with the 19th Regiment, Company H, Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Tennessee from Paulding County, Georgia.   He entered service on June 25, 1861 as a private in what was known as the Cotton Guards.  He was admitted to C.S.A. General Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia, December 9, 1862, "on account of disability."  He returned to active duty December 10, 1862.  He was later sent to a hospital at Wilmington, North Carolina in 1865.

        Daniel Elbert Clopton was the son of William Pitt Clopton and Catherine Elizabeth Campbell Clopton.  A direct descendant of the first William Clopton, Gentleman, and his wife, Ann (Booth) Dennett Clopton, Daniel was born in 1853.  He married Mary E. Brown.  Both the Clopton and Brown families migrated from Tennessee to Missouri.  According to Missouri, Mother of the West, while hunting at the age of 15, he was wounded by a pistol shot and spent much of his life an invalid.  He tried his hand at farming, but his poor health forced him to abandon this enterprise and move with his family to Dadeville, where he clerked in a store until his death at age 36 in 1889.

        A copy of original Bible records located Clopton Family Archives, does not have a cover sheet.  The information on the three pages appears to have been entered by one hand using the same pen, with the exception of the names of who the children married and the date and place of death for Guy and Melissa.  Therefore, we can assume the Bible belonged to this couple and that one of them made most of the entries.  Place of birth for all the children except Cecil, was given as "Mourissi."  Someone attempted to correct the spelling by overwriting and came up with several more creative ways to spell Missouri.  The only recorded death was that of Elves Clopton.

        The family moved from Dade County, Missouri about 1901 and relocated in Oklahoma.  They settled on a farm about eleven miles east of Lawton.  All of the sons became farmers.

        Sources disagree on the dates of Benjamin Michaux Clopton's birth and death.  His grave marker shows the dates, 1828 to 1897. Several sources give the year as 1835, which is more likely.  The 1850 census shows him living in Rutherford County, Tennessee and working as a tailor.  He opened the first drug store in Rice.  The U.S. War Department records show that he was a private in Company B, Nelson's Regiment, 10th Texas Infantry, Confederate States Army.  He enlisted in late April or early May 1862 at Springfield, Texas and was captured January 11, 1863.  He was hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia and exchanged May 5, 1863.  The 1870 census for Navarro County, Texas identified him as a merchant and values his real property at $4,000 and his personal property at $300.  It indicates the family was living near Chatfield.

April 31, 1862, listed as 1st Sergt., October 31, 1862.  He was captured at Gettysburg, June 5, 1863 and sent to Fort Delaware July 1863.  From Fort Delaware he was sent to Point Lookout on October 26, 1863.  Exchanged at Point Lookout, May 3, 1864.

        Hoggatt Clopton was a Lieutenant in Albert W. Johnson's Regiment in 1862.  He was a Mason and was active in the Democratic Party.  He resided at "Clopton Hall."  When "Clopton Hall" was sold,  this advertisement appeared in the Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas newspaper:

        Jesse Perkins Clopton was a graduate of the College at Lebanon, Tennessee.  His study of medicine was interrupted by the start of the Civil War, and he enlisted in 1861 in the 15th Arkansas Regiment, Cleburn's Command.  During the war he was wounded, and after rejoining his Regiment after a four month hospital stay, was captured.  He was exchanged and fought in the battle of Helena.

        433.  William Capers²¹ Clopton (John Hoggatt "Jack"²⁰, Anthony¹⁹, Benjamin¹⁸, Walter¹⁷, William¹⁶, William¹⁵, Walter¹⁴, William¹³, Richard¹², William¹¹, John¹⁰, William⁹, Thomas⁸, Walter⁷, William⁶, Walter⁵, William⁴, Walter³, William², Guillaume¹ Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born March 16, 1853 in Holly Springs, Mississippi³⁵³, and died March 12, 1926 in Hotel Stafford, Baltimore, Maryland and buried March 14, 1926 Belfontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri³⁵⁴.  He married before 1879 (1) Mary Frances Garth, daughter of David Garth and Susan Chapman.  She died June 9, 1895.  He married after 1900 (2) Louise Espenschied, daughter of Louis Espenscheid and Catherine von Paul she died after March 14, 1926.   

        Judge Clopton was as well known for his collections of art and violins as for his legal abilities.  He amassed one of the finest violin collects in the world.  A death notice appearing in the Post Dispatch stated the collection was worth $500,000.  He lent instruments from his collection to renowned artists, and when he lived in New York, his home was a rendezvous for famous violinists, including Ysaye, Ondericek, Marteau, and Rivardi.”  On one occasion a talented young man was allowed to see the collection and to play one of the violins.  When he expressed an interest in owning the violin, Judge Clopton presented it to him.  See An Honorable and Contrite Heart

        434.  Anthony²¹ Clopton, Sr., C.S.A. (Benjamin Michaux²⁰, Anthony¹⁹, Benjamin¹⁸, Walter¹⁷, William¹⁶, William¹⁵, Walter¹⁴, William¹³, Richard¹², William¹¹, John¹⁰, William⁹, Thomas⁸, Walter⁷, William⁶, Walter⁵, William⁴, Walter³, William², Guillaume¹ Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham)³⁵⁵ was born July 20, 1837 in Tennessee³⁵⁶, and died November 6, 1877 in Wimberley, Hays County, Texas and buried Wimberley Village Cemetery³⁵⁷.  He married Margaret Sophronia Mayes³⁵⁸ December 31, 1861 in Hays, Texas³⁵⁹, daughter of Dan Mayes and Nancy Meeks.  She was born June 7, 1842 in Missouri³⁵⁹, and died October 6, 1927 in Wimberley,  Hays County, Texas and buried Wimberley Village Cemetery³⁶⁰.

        In 1862 or '63, Anthony enlisted in the confederate States Army with Company D, Davidson's (afterward Daly's and, finally, Ragsdale's) Battalion, Texas Cavalry.  Records from that period show him as serving in various capacities including:  the Quartermaster's office as clerk, Quartermaster Sergeant, and Wagon Master.

The 1870 United States Census lists Anthony as a farmer.  He also worked in his father's blacksmith shop.  He was a furniture maker.  He made a bed for his wife and it is still in the possession of his descendants.  He purchased 70 acres of land in Hays County Texas on May 4, 1877.  This land was located on the west side of Cypress fork at Jacob's Well.  The property was sold by his children in 1933.

        864           iii.    Agnes Sophronia Clopton³⁶⁶, born October 28, 1866 in Hays County, Texas³⁶⁷; died March 31, 1944 in Texas and is buried at Jacob's Well, Wimberley³⁶⁸.  She married W. R. McCuistion; died in Texas and buried at Jacob's Well, Wimberley.

        865           iv.    Daniel Benjamin Clopton³⁶⁹, born July 17, 1868 in Wimberly, Hays County, Texas³⁷⁰; died October 4, 1954.  He married Minnie Amelia Wegner; born February 4, 1875 in Blanco, Texas; died October 18, 1958.

        866            v.    Justina Leora Clopton, born March 8, 1871 in Hays County, Texas³⁷⁰; died October 10, 1950 in Texas, probably, and buried at Wimberley Village Cemetery, Texas.  She married (1) Wyatt T. Brooks.  She married (2) James Smith.

        867           vi.    Sarah Elizabeth Clopton, of Wimberley, Texas, born September 22, 1873 in Hays County, Texas³⁷⁰; died January 29, 1937 in Texas, probably, and buried at Wimberley Village Cemetery, Texas³⁷¹.  She married Alonzo Mack Tanner.
