Lamar230 October 15, 1839 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia231.  She was born January 5, 1823 in Georgia232, and died in Montgomery, Alabama and buried Oakwood Cemetery.

Life was precarious for little ones in the antebellum South.  A glance at the Bible of Waldegrave James “J. W.” Clopton and his wife Frances D. Lamar, reveal the terrible and tragic drama of tiny lives born and then too quickly lost.  The Bible records the birth of eight children, four were to die before or shortly after their fifth birthday  The first hurtle for babies of this period was to be born.  The good news was that doctors had entered the field of obstetrics and infant care.  The bad news was that they didn’t know what they were doing.  Although physicians understood there existed a correlation between the mother’s activities and the baby in her womb, they were a little fuzzy about the details.  The wonder is not that four of J. W. and Frances’ children died, it is that four survived.  See Ragged Rebbles and the Killkenny Cat

The people of Putnam County, Georgia, survived the destruction of their land and way of life.  Following the Civil War, William Henry Harrison Clopton and his wife, Martha Isabel Lancaster faced daunting hardship with grace and a sense of humor, evident in the many delightful letters which have survived the years.  Their children had a rollicking good time, whether they were scandalizing the neighbors, entertaining the preacher, or exploring untamed Florida.  See Of Possums and Land Barons and Wonders of the Sea

"The old home has two rooms on the first and second floors, one room deep, with no central hall.  The two rooms in the basement were originally used for storage, potato cellar, wine, etc.  It had a diret floor and there were no windows.  Later, the basement was remodeled, windows installed, flooring, etc., and now has the appearance of an English basement with a kitchen and dining room.  The hand-hewn white oak beams pegged with wooden pins in the basement ceiling are original.  Up to the time of remodeling, the kitchen was detached from the main dwelling and stood in the side yard.  The two rooms on the main floor have high ceilings and are 20 feet square, with old English powder rooms on one side of each chimney.

The first year of taxes, 1782, shows Mary Mills with 270 acres.  By 1814 her name disappears and John Nicholas Mill's name appears 'conveyed from Estate of Benjamin Mills.'"

Dr. Jack Wiley and his twin brother, Laird Harris Wiley, Kaare both buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia.  Each man's tombstone shows the same date of birth, November, 21, 1803; yet Dr. Jack's says the place of birth was Hancock County, while Laird's says his was Baldwin County.  After they were born a section of one of these counties was shifted to the other which would explain the inconsistency.

Martin enlisted in the Confederate Army August 11, 1863, in Co. D. 61st Alabama Infantry for the duration of the War, butler County, Alabama by Captain J. F. Family story handed down says that her name "Lee" was taken from General

Robert E. Lee.  She died from burns when her clothes caught fire helping her

grandfather Greathouse clear land.  Her grave is the oldest in the family

cemetery.

Upon the death of Judge David C. Clopton, in 1892, a great flurry of commentary blanketed newspapers throughout the South.  In addition to the expected recitation of his career, his ancestry from a “conspicuous Virginia Family,” was duly noted, and, oddly, the shape of his head, complexion and eyes received praise.  Of his wives, it was his third who is best remembered, the unflappable Virginia Caroline Tunstall, widow of Clement Claiborne Clay, who was himself, a descendant of the ancient Cloptons.  See The Death of an Old Land Mark

"As a theologian the "Old Doctor" (his father) rated him above any of his sons.  His ministerial life was checkered owing largely to his delicate nervous organism.  The closing years of his life were characterized by a humility and gentleness.  Shortly before his death he removed to Texas where he spent his last days in the home of his son (John Foster Pierce), who achieved great success as a minister of the Gospel.  Thus far away from his native Georgia and quite aloof from his old conference associated, Dr. James L. Pierce entered into rest."

Andrew and his Marianne gave the unmarried  Mary Harris and her son, Joel Chandler Harris a home and paid for the young Joel's education. Much has been made of the influence of professional writers on the creator of "Uncle Remus," however, seldom is more than a nod directed towards the kith and ken who undoubtedly made the greatest impression on him from his birth through young adulthood.  Possibly no family in Putnam County held any greater fascination to the writer than the Reids and the Cloptons.  A family named Clopton play a prominent role in one of his delightful novels.  See A Tempest In The Briar Patch.

February 24, 1887 in Virginia and buried at "Oakland," New Kent County, Virginia390.

For many years it was thought that this William Edmund Clopton, Jr. had died in infancy but nothing could be further from the truth.  A letter written by his brother, Dr. John Fielding Clopton, Sr. to his sister, Henrietta Adelaide Clopton, mentions his older brother.  Family Bible records, newspaper notices, and letters also indicate that this William is the individual mentioned on his daughter, Cordelia Belle's tombstone in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

William served in the Third Virginia Calvary under William F. Lee. He was captured while on furlough at home.  He was taken to Johnsons Island for nine months, and was one of the last soldiers exchanged.

Of her mother, Ellen Hesseltine Hill, Cordelia tells us:  "(she had a) forceful and lovely character, a member of the Hill family of King and Queen County; prominent in early Colonial days, her father was born in King William County.  Pieces of furniture, glassware, etc. that are still in her family having come from her grandfather's home are evidences of his prosperity and culture.  (She was) educated in the best schools of her day, was fond of teaching and had private schools to educate her own children; she filled well all positions she was called on to fill, won the respect of all she came in contact with and love of many.

One of her slaves went to New York after the civil war.  The northern lady who employed the former slave in writing to the colored relatives south, expressed a desire to meet Ellen Clopton, a delicate but evident compliment."

Cordelia continued, "Coming to her country home from Richmond after her marriage her husband like so many southern men, was a sporting huntsman, killed many birds with beautiful plumage.  Ellen Clopton conceived the idea (entirely original) of preserving them and making something of them.

When Dr. John Fielding Clopton began his fourteen years of service at Williamsburg’s Eastern State Hospital for the Insane, the method of treatment for the mentally ill consisted of “employment of fresh air, generous diet, exercise, personal cleanliness, constant occupation and rational amusements.”  An experiment attempting to ease the inmates back into society by permitting them to go out into the community to socialize, so shocked the good citizens that many of the administration and staff were fired.  He had a deep appreciation for the ladies, but once he met the lovely young Wilhelmina Somerville Piggott, he had eyes for no other.  Dr. Clopton courted her madly and eventually won her heart.  They would end their days together at Norge, Virginia.  See All This Nonsense

FORM ER FOX HUNTERS TO BE HONORED AT PONY SHOW SEPT. 9

The fall show of the Gloucester Pony Club will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 beginning at 10 A.M. at Botetourt School.  The program will honor Gloucester fox hunters of the late nineteenth century, a spokesman for the organization said. Each class will be dedicated to the memory of one outstanding fox hunter of that period and the winning trophy will be awarded by a member of his family.

Those to be honored include:  Joseph Bryan of "Eagle Point," Naxera; Dr. Thomas Clopton of "Havers Hall," Belroi; Albert Eastwood of Singpine; John Farinholt of Freeport; Charles Jones of "Cedar Hill," Gloucester; Richard Jones of "Lands Eng," Naxera; Goodall A. Minor of Bena; Mrs. Blanche Dimmock Noland of "Sherwood," Selden; Capt. Richard Page of "Greenway" and "Shelly," Coke; Maj. Jefferson Sinclair and son Ashton Wray Sinclair of "Marifield," Naxera; James Jefferson Sinclair, "Bay Cottage," Naxera, James Lyons Taliaferro of "Church Hill," Gloucester; Timothy W. Thrift of Woods Cross Roads; Robert Wilkins of "Enfield," Sassafras; and Mrs. Katherine Vandegrift Withers of "Sevenby," Naxera.

Mrs. Elizabeth Mott and Miss Indie Sinclair are co-chairmen of the show.  They state that the fox hunting tradition still goes on in Gloucester but in a very different style.  "Gone are the days of riding ten miles to the casting grounds, accompanied by the hounds on foot - hunting for eight hours and riding home.  Now it is trucks for the hounds and trailers and vans for the horses.  An easy hunting life.!

581            ii.    Brantley Turpin, born August 4, 1891.

Brantley sold protectographs as did his brother, Miles.  He was a great salesman, but unfortunately, he drank a lot as well, so he didn't remember all the sales he made.  He had the reputation of being on of the worst drivers in Virginia.  He'd just stop and park up on the sidewalk and scare the heck out of everyone.

+      582           iii.    Miles Turpin, born December 11, 1873 in Richmond, Virginia; died April 28, 1934 in Chicago, Ilinois and buried April 30, 1934 at Graceland Cemetery, Chicago.

583           iv.    Edward Clopton Turpin, born August 14, 1875.

"Eddie was sort of the black sheep of the family.  He was once engaged to a girl from a very good family, and the night before the wedding he got really drunk and he and his friends picked up a bunch of prostitutes and drove all over town in a wagon.  It was a huge scandal and the wedding was cancelled and Eddie figured he should just leave town.  And he disappeared for 25 years.  He became a seaman.  Eddie's brother, Marshall, and his other brother, Miles, had always said he could stay with them.  So once when he hit town in San Pedro, he looked up Marshall in the phone book and came to stay.  That was the first anyone had heard from Eddie in years.  I think Marshall got Eddie a job, but that didn't last.  Marshall and Eddie had a bar in San Pedro together (called Marshall and Eddie's).  Eddie met a woman and got married.  She was as tough as he was.  They argued and fought and did everything together.  She worked in the Cannery I think.  She was a big woman about 200 pounds.  I remember going on the bus with them to Denver to see his mother.  We went on the bus in those days, that's how we did it then.  And Eddie came in the room and his mother just sat there and cried and held him.  She hadn't seen or heard from him in 25 years."  Martine Brooks Evans

Child of James Clopton and Carrie Vernon is:

588             i.    Anne Vernon22 Clopton433, born Abt. April 24, 1891; died Abt. April 25, 1891 in Virginia and buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, on April 26.

        265.  John Jones21 Clopton (Edward Andrew Jackson20, Edwin J.19, George18, William17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham)434 was born November 20, 1858 in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia435, and died December 20, 1930 in Lexington, Kentucky, by his own hand, and buried Lexington Cemetery436.  He married Irene Cabell Horsley437 Bef. December 10, 1891 in Trinity Church, Nelson County,  Virginia, by the Rev. George S. Somerville438, daughter of Nicholas Horsley and Nannie Dean.  She was born September 1869 in Virginia, and died Bet. 1910 and 1912 in Baltimore, Maryland, and buried, probably, at Sparrow's Point, Maryland439.

Decades before her death in 1987, Irene Horsley (Clopton) Waters wrote a very candid and touching essay regarding her early years.   She tells of the rollicking adventures of herself and two of her sisters, Julia H. (Clopton) Cresap and Alice C. (Clopton) Watson.  The family lived in the Rectory of Grace Episcopal Church at Cedar Run Parish, Casanova, Fauquier County, six miles from  Warrenton, Virginia, from January 1899 until August 1907.  In these days of “political correctness,” her terminology may be unsettling, and some of the stories, troubling.  However, her efforts are greatly valued as she eloquently captures and preserves so accurately the mores, fun, and tragedies of rural Virginia in the early twentieth century.  See Three Little Cloptons In Virginia

593            v.    Lucy Clopton.  She married Clarence Stinnett.

        270.  John Skyren21 Lewis (Zachary20, Martha19 Clopton, George18, William17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born January 14, 1809, and died April 14, 1861 in King William County, Virginia.  He married Octavia Claiborne Hill, of "Montrose" November 20, 1834 in Richmond, Virginia, daughter of William Hill and Judith Claiborne.  She was born August 19, 1817 in "Springfield," King William County, and died March 26, 1906 in West Point, Virginia.

Children are listed above under (221) Octavia Claiborne Hill, of "Montrose".

Tisdale.

The Waldegrave James Clopton Family Bible records his age at death as 1 week.  It is not clear where he died.

598            v.    Viola Tisdale, born October 24, 1878 in probably Montgomery, Alabama; died November 1878 in Montgomery, Alabama.

Again, the Family Bible entry for her death is difficult to read.   The date is uncertain.

599           vi.    John Franklin Tisdale, born December 14, 1879 in probably Montgomery, Alabama.

600          vii.    Frances Flora Tisdale, died Abt. May 11, 1887.

Her birth is not recorded in the Family Bible, although her date of burial is listed as May 11, 1887 and notes she was the seventh child.

        288.  Harriet Isabel22 Clopton (William Henry Harrison "Billy"21, Thomas B.20, Waldegrave19, Waldegrave18, William17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born December 7, 1860 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, and died October 21, 1891 in Miami, Dade County, Florida and buried Concord United Methodist Church444.  She married William Horne Girtman December 1888 in Kissimmee, Florida, son of John Girtman and Zelma Guilford.  He was born August 15, 1867 in Eufaula, Alabama, and died December 18, 1904 in Miami, Dade County, Florida.

Child of Harriet Clopton and William Girtman is:

601             i.    Zelma Bell23 Girtman, born December 15, 1889 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia.  She married Edwin Mury Jones, M.D. July 30, 1913.

Zelma Belle was called "Rosebud."  The story goes that her uncle, Harvey Gordon Clopton, was a little boy when she was born.  He peered into her cradle and said, "She looks just like a rosebud!"  Thereafter that was what she was called.  Both her mother and father died young.  She was raised in Miami by her uncle and aunt, Gabriel Harrison Clopton and his wife, Elizabeth Celine Girtman.  The Jones' family was interesting, to say the least. Dr. Jones would periodically loose his license to practice.  Family tradition maintains he was involved with drugs.  The three girls were accomplished musicians, but, otherwise, were a mess.  They were  hippies before anyone ever heard of such a thing.  Once they all piled into a convertible in their swimsuits and rode all the way to New Orleans with their boyfriends.  This was in 1935.  They all were married several times but had no children.  Bylee was a composer and pianist, and Inez, a pianist and organist.

        289.  William Thomas "Boo"22 Clopton (William Henry Harrison "Billy"21, Thomas B.20, Waldegrave19, Waldegrave18, William17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham)445 was born April 25, 1863 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia446, and died September 6, 1955 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church447.  He married Minnie Flora King448 November 15, 1893 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia449, daughter of Elisha King and Elizabeth Johnston.  She was born January 7, 1869 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia450, and died April 10, 1942 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church451.

Georgia had barely recovered from the Civil War when the boll weevil hit.  Too much row cropping, and poor plowing techniques had brought tremendous loss of the fertile topsoil, bringing a decline in cotton production.  The boll weevil found a home in the fields and bolls.  This ruined the agricultural system throughout much of the South.  Then a larger economic depression gripped the Nation, and what cotton was produced was almost worthless.  William Thomas “Boo” Clopton and his wife, Minnie Flora King, both of Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, found themselves as poor as church mice with six boys to raise.  What they lacked in material possessions they made up for in love.  It was a good thing, too, the boys were raised on a farm because this big boisterous family needed all the space they could get, as they careened down the halls of the house in roller skates, or sailed little brother off the roof to see if he could fly.  See Minnie’s Boys

Children of William Clopton and Minnie King are:

Cuyler Clopton, a true pillar of Concord Church.  He has been a member of the church all of his life and at times he and his family were the only  ones in attendance for Sunday services.  Concord has seen many lean years.  So lean, in fact, that there was a time that there was some talk of consolidating Concord with one of the other churches on the charge.  It was through the untiring and uncomplaining efforts of Mr. Clopton that Concord is still standing.  There were many years when there was no money in the till and there was work to be done on the church building.  Mr. Clopton did the work and paid for the materials out of his pocket. Very few people are aware of just how much this one person has done for this church and the members of this church.  It is worthy that we take this opportunity to honor one of our oldest and most faithful members.  A person who has spent his entire life in this church and has given everything that we asked of him and more when needed.  See Oh Worship The King

Although the family had been told by the War Department Rufus was missing in action in 1942, they did not receive confirmation he was alive and captured by the Japanese, until 1943; his mother had been dead for 13 months.  While Rufus was held captive, his family kept his mother's death a secret.  They were able to send him boxes and mail from time to time.  In the first box sent him they tucked a letter his mother had written to him just before her death.  He clung to a future of returning to his parents and brothers.  When he returned to the States, Rufus picked up his mail and only then learned his mother was dead from a letter from the family.  He wasn't really surprised.  Although he had received 16 additional letters while held prisoner, no more came from her.  They hadn't told him,  "They figured I had enough bad news."  See With Quiet Grace and Dignity
