|
| Location | The Cloud Family Association will be meeting in Duluth, Georgia this summer. Duluth is about 20 miles from downtown Atlanta. It offers easy access to the many venues in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina. | |
| Access | The Wyndham is located at exit 44 off I-85 North. The drive from the airport
is about 50 miles. However, if you do not want to rent a car, catch the MARTA train North to the Doraville station. Doraville is the last stop on the train and takes about 45 minutes from the airport. An entrance to a MARTA station is inside the airport terminal (watch for signs in the baggage-claim area). Other MARTA stations are located in downtown Atlanta (Georgia Dome/CNN, Underground Atlanta, High Museum, etc.) and in several suburbs (Lennox Square, Sandy Springs, Decatur, College Park, etc.). We will arrange for taxi service from the Doraville station; however, you must indicate on your registration form if you will need this service and also indicate your flight number and time of arrival into Hartsfield International Airport. The hotel offers free shuttle rides to more than 30 restaurants and shopping areas. |
|
| Hotel Reservations |
Please make your reservations directly with the hotel. The Cloud Family Association has been extended the $64 rate (plus a 12% occupancy tax) which includes breakfast for the first two people in the room. This is not a continental breakfast, but a full chef prepared breakfast. Check in is 3 p.m. and check out is 12 noon.
| Friday 7/16/99 | There will be informal gatherings and visits to local sites of interest on Friday. During the afternoon a meeting room and registration desk will be set up in the hotel for the convenience of attendees. This is a good time to greet old friends and long-lost cousins, meet members of various Cloud families, and enjoy the fellowship and enlightenment available. | |
| Friday Evening Session |
We will gather on Friday night for our family introductions and have
presentations by several of our members. They will be discussing family directly involved
with the Civil War. The Cloud Family Association records as well as the back issues of the Journal will be available during the weekend. |
|
| Saturday Luncheon |
The Annual CFA business meeting on Saturday will start at 10:00 a.m. and
be followed by the annual luncheon. The Luncheon will cost $21.00 for adults and $12.50 for children between 5 and 12. Saturday's luncheon speaker will be William Scaife, a Civil War historian. He has published several books on the subject and serves as a Historical Consultant to many nationally recognized organizations and magazines. |
|
| Saturday Evening Workshop |
On Saturday evening we have a genealogical research interactive workshop led by Jane Splawn. She is a regular lecturer at the National Archives Branch in Atlanta. She will talk about what the archives have to offer and then spend much of her lecture on Military Records in general with some emphasis on the Civil War.
| Sunday Trips | While there is much to do in the Atlanta area and many things are accessible
in 30-60 minutes, there is no one outing that relates directly to the Cloud Family. We do
not have a group trip planned for Sunday but I hope that you will consider visiting one of
the many attractions in
the Atlanta area. Just a few suggestions are Stone Mountain, the Jimmy Carter Center, CNN, Coca-Cola Museum, High Museum, Six Flags over Georgia, or the Kennesaw Battlefield. The list is endless. Golfers will find several courses within an easy drive, and shoppers are in just the right place. There is much to see and do in Atlanta. |
|
| Contact | Any questions about the weekend can be forwarded to Jane Ellison via email at jelli@inetnow.net, phone 770.967.4554 or mail: 5004 Strickland Rd, Gainesville, GA 30507. | |
| Register | Please return the registration form and payment for the luncheon to Linda Boose 508 Crestwood, Eastland, TX 76448. Make checks payable to: Cloud Family Association. | |
| Who will be there? | The gathering usually consists of regular attendees, sometime attendees, and
first-timers in about even numbers. Interest can substitute for CFA membership, but
joining CFA is certainly easy. There will be some CFA members here who have been getting together over a period of over 20 years. Some of these are clearly related, some have searched in vain for 20 years without finding kinship, and some don't care.
|
|
| How will we benefit? | Everyone meets new people, everyone shares at least one interest, everyone has a
chance to talk with folks who can tell them something new about one Cloud family or
another, and most everyone comes away with new knowledge of Cloud family histories
and resources for learning more. There will be journals and other literature to review and possibly copy, maps to inspect, possibly a book or two to buy, Internet sites and addresses to note, and possibly disks to copy. But, buying stuff has never been a big part of these meetings. |
|
| How will they dress? | There will probably be someone to show up in a tie, and he will probably be introduced as a guest speaker. Everyone else will be dressed comfortably for a leisurely summer weekend. (See photos.) | |
| Invitation | "We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in
Georgia." --- Jane Ellison, CFA VP and host for this gathering |
