Cole Families of
Deep Fork and Luther Townships
Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma Territory
When the Unassigned Lands were opened for settlement in 1889, several Cole families descended on the Deep Fork Township, which was along the eastern boundary of the newly-opened lands, in the northeastern portion of present-day Oklahoma Co., OK. When the adjacent Iowa Lands were opened in 1891, some of them moved eastward to Luther Township. Tradition has it that most were [if not all] were connected if we can just trace back far enough to find the links. I've presented them below as family units [husband, wife, and children].
Listmembers with COLEs in this area include:
Al Cole, descendant of homesteader Joseph Dill COLE. Will COLE was J.D.'s brother and Tolbert was his uncle. All came to O.T. from Neodesha, KS and trace their roots back through KY & TN to SC.
Sharon McAllister, descendant of Deep Fork homesteader William A. "Bob" COLE, and his son Otho who homesteaded in Luther Township. They also came to O.T. from Neodesha, KS, and trace their roots back to KY & TN.
We have considerably more information on some of these families, but have provided only a brief description of the ones we can place in these two townships in Territorial days.
A. E. COLE lived in northeastern Oklahoma County at the turn of the century. His birth date and location are unknown, as is his death date. His wife's maiden name was CRUM.
They had two known children:
Amanda E. COLE, b. 1862; m. Thomas, February 25, 1903, Oklahoma Co., OK; d. Aft. 1954, in Luther, OK.
Ed COLE, b. March 03, 1867; d. August 31, 1941.

Charles COLE. Circumstantial evidence from census records supports the identification as William "Uncle Bobby" Cole's first cousin, the son of Marvel COLE of Obion Co., TN. Identification of his children and wives is suggested by the census records but is mostly conjecture. His homestead was the SE4 of 25-14-1W. He first married an unknown woman from TENNESEE Bef. 1863. He married (2) UNKNOWN KENTUCKY Bef. 1875. He married (3) UNKNOWN TENNESSEE Abt. 1884. He married (4) LAURA "COLE" Abt. 1888.
Child of CHARLES COLE and UNKNOWN "COLE" is:
EMERSON5 COLE, b. November 1864, Kentucky; d. Aft. 1900.
Children of CHARLES COLE and UNKNOWN KENTUCKY are:
ARLEY COLE, b. March 1876, Illinois; d. Unknown.
LOU COLE, b. September 1882, Kansas; d. Unknown.
Children of CHARLES COLE and UNKNOWN TENNESSEE are:
CLIDE H. COLE, b. January 1885, Kansas; d. Unknown.
DADRILL H. COLE, b. February 1887, Kansas; d. Unknown.
Children of CHARLES COLE and LAURA "COLE" are:
HETTIE A. COLE, b. July 1889, Kansas; d. Unknown.
FRED W. COLE, b. August 1895, Oklahoma; d. Unknown.
LESLIE COLE, b. August 1898.
D. COLE. Mentioned several times in The Luther Register from 1901-1903 and described as "one of Deep Fork's prosperous farmers". Mrs. D. COLE is listed as the owner of the plot in Valley View / Luther cemetery next to that of J. D. COLE and members of the J. D. COLE family are buried there so it is quite possible that Joseph Dill COLE was known locally as just "D.".
EMERSON COLE was born November 1864 in Kentucky, and died Aft. 1900. He married RHOBECCA Abt. 1889. His homestead was the NW4 of 25-14-1W, in Deep Fork Township. This was in the same section as William A. "Bob" COLE and Charles COLE, and tradition has it that he was Charles' son.

i. EMERSON COLE, b. April 1890.
ii. ANDREW COLE, b. June 1892.

M.E. COLE. The Luther Register mentioned the sale of his farm animals and equipment in 1901. From the description, his place must have been quite near the intersection that divides Oklahoma County's Deep Fork and Luther Townships from Logan County's Springvale and Iowa Townships.

Children of WILLIAM COLE and ELLEN CROCKETT are:
1. EMMA DICK COLE, b. October 01, 1863; d. April 19, 1865.

Census records look like "L.", while land records look like a "T" -- but from the time and place they must be the same man. His homestead was the SE4 of 27-14-1W, in Deep Fork Township. [This is one of Al Cole's collateral lines.]
