1. Coonrod S.1 Coon;; (various Conrad); born 20 September 1803 in [West] Virginia. His parentage has yet to be determined;1,2,3 died 31 October 1861 in probably Hancock county, Indiana, at age 58 . The recording of death information by Indiana health officers began in 1882. Thus, there is no official Indiana death record for Coonrod. Nor is there an obituary in The Hancock Democrat or The Castle Courier. The only source for his death date is his tombstone, and this date is partially verified by the dates of his will and his will probate;4,5 buried in Harlan Cemetery, Brown township, Hancock county, Indiana. Coonrod made a will on 6 February 1861 which was probated on 11 Nov 1861,
Greenfield, Hancock county, Indiana. In it, he mentions his "beloved wife
Barbary Coon" and his "sons Joseph, James, and Joshua." He directs that
after the death or remarriage of his wife, his property is to be equally
divided among all of his heirs.11 The property distributions
were handled in a series of deeds (primarily quit claim) by his heirs that
were filed in both Hancock and Henry counties, Indiana, between 1862 and

Barbara Radabaugh was born between 1802 and 1805 in Harrison county, [West] Virginia. Her parentage has yet to be determined.12,13,14,15 She was a member of the, which was organized on between 1852 and 1882; a Baptist.16 She died on 2 September 1882 in at the home of her son on Duck Creek, Greensboro, Greensboro township, Henry county, Indiana, of pulmonary consumption [tuberculosis]. Coonrod and Barbara removed from Harrison county, [West] Virginia to
Hancock county, Indiana possibly with the families of the brothers Daniel
S., Lemuel, and Cicero Wilkinson. In a 1902 biography of a son of Daniel S.
Wilkinson by Bowen, Daniel was stated to have been born in Harrison county,
Virginia, and in 1835, removed from there to "the line between Hancock and
Henry counties, [Indiana]." The biography states that "an old Virginia
friend, Coonrod Coon, had land adjoining the Wilkinson tract on the north
and a family by the name of Davis lived about one mile and a half distant.
They each erected cabins that first winter." One could assume from the text
of the biography that the Wilkinsons and the Coons knew each other in
Virginia, and could conclude that they migrated together. More research is
necessary to determine a connection with the Coons and the Wilkinsons prior
to their removal to Indiana. Removal date range can be estimated as being
between 17 September 1833 (birthdate of son Marion, who was born in
Virginia) and about 1836 (birth year of daughter Jane, who was born in
Indiana).19,20
There are several misconceptions about the lives of Coonrod Coon
and Barbara Radabaugh Coon which have been perpetuated by a microfilmed
manuscript held by the Family History Library which was compiled by Cline
Morgan Koon in 1970.21 First and foremost is Cline
Morgan Koon's statement that Barbara died in 1825 in Marietta, Washington
county, Ohio.21 This is disproved by the 1899
Henry county, Indiana death record of Mark Coon
which records his parents as K. Coon and Barbara Ridinbow.22 This death record combined
with census records give Mark Coon's year of birth as 1832, and show that
he was born in Virginia [probably West Virginia], making it impossible for
Barbara (Radabaugh) Coon, wife of Coonrod Coon, to have died in 1825.19,23,24,25
Additionally, the obituary of Mark Coon mentions
his brother Jonathan Coon.26 According to census records,
Jonathan Coon was born circa 1825 in Virginia[probably West Virginia].27,28,29 Thus, it is unlikely (albeit,
not impossible) that his mother died that same year in Ohio.
So,
did Coonrod and Barbara (Radabaugh) Coon remove from [West] Virginia to
Indiana, or did they remove to Washington county, Ohio, as is claimed by
Cline Morgan Koon? The answer can be found in a series of quit claim deeds
in Hancock and Henry counties, Indiana, of the heirs of Coonrod S. Coon to
handle the distribution of his real property after his death.30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45,46 By tracing the deed transfers
(see deed analysis), it is shown that one of the
heirs of Coonrod S. Coon is a Mark Coon who married a Catharine (see
particularly Hancock U:512 and Henry 6:463 where Mark and Catharine Coon transfer
the land previously owned by Coonrod S. Coon to George Coon).35,31 This is the
same Mark Coon of the above mentioned death record and obituary, son of K.
Coon and Barbara Ridinbow.
Second, disproving the 1825 death of
Barbara (Radabaugh) Coon also disproves Cline Morgan Koon's presumed second
marriage of her husband Coonrod Coon to a Nancy Coon on 19 December 1825
[presumably also in Ohio]. If there were a Coonrod Coon who married a Nancy
Coon in Ohio, then it was not the same Coonrod Coon who was married to
Barbara Radabaugh.21
Third, the children
of Coonrod and Barbara (Radabaugh) Coon as listed by Cline Morgan Koon are
doubtful. Coonrod and Barbara removed to Indiana in 1835. If Harrison H.
Koon, b. 1823, and Weedon Koon, b. 25 February 1825, ages 12 and 10 in 1835
respectively, are the children of this couple, then it is likely that the
couple would have taken them to Indiana when they removed that year.
However, it appears, according to Koon's manuscript, that Harrison remained
in Harrison county, [West] Virginia, and Weedon removed to Washington
county, Ohio before 1851, and died there in 1899.47,48
As has already been
stated, Coonrod Coon, the husband of Barbara Radabaugh and the focus of
this text, died in Hancock county, Indiana, in 1861. According to Cline
Morgan Koon, there was a Coonrod Coon who died in Marietta, Ohio, on 31
August 1850. He was quite possibly the father of a Harrison and Weedon
Koon, but he was not the husband of Barbara Radabaugh, nor was she
their mother.
Finally, Cline Morgan Koon traces the ancestry of the
Coonrod Coon who married Barbara Radabaugh back to the progenitor Phillip
Coon. Given that there was probably more than one Coonrod Coon in the same
place at the same time, and the errors of Koon's manuscript as already
described, this ancestry is flawed. A complete sorting out of all of the
Coonrod Coon families will be required before it can be determined which,
if any, was the son of Joseph Coon, and how the others may be descended
from Phillip Coon.49

Sarah Johnson; (various Mum)129,130,131,132 was born on 1 January 1833
in probably Iredell county, North Carolina.133,107,134,135,116,136,137 She died
on 22 July 1917 in home of Obe Dallas and Minnie (Kuhn) VanDuyn, Wilkinson,
Hancock county, Indiana, at age 84 of gangrene of the foot contributed to
by diabetes.138,121,139,140,141 Her funeral occured on 24
July 1917 Hancock county, Indiana.142 She was buried on 24 July
1917 in Harlan Cemetery, Brown township, Hancock county, Indiana. For

county, Indiana, . Myrtle (Kuhn) Larmore wrote that Sarah Johnson Kuhn

Mark and Catharine were charter members of Church of Christ at Wilkinson in Hancock county, Indiana which was formed on 1 January 1899.155,156 Although Mark and Catharine were charter members of the Wilkinson Church of Christ, Mark's funeral occured on 30 October 1899 at the Friends church, Wilkinson, Hancock county, Indiana, where Elder D. W. Campbell, of the Christian church officiated. Richman states that the Friends Church at Wilkinson, which had been in use since 1886, had a seating capacity of 250, but that the Church of Christ had been meeting in a building for ten years that "was not entirely satisfactory, and [in 1899], it was abandoned by the congregation and sold." With it's large seating capacity, it appears that the Friends Church may have been the most appropriate location in Wilkinson for a public gathering such as a funeral.26,157
Catharine Rhyneer was born between 1830 and 1836 in Pennsylvania.158,159,160 She died at about 2:00 p.m on 3 August 1899 in Brown township, Hancock county, Indiana.161,153 Her funeral occured at 2:00 p.m on 5 August 1899 the Friends church [which Richman states had a seating capacity of about 250], Wilkinson, Hancock county, Indiana, where Elder Johnson and T. H. Kuhn officiated.153 She was buried on 5 August 1899 in Harlan Cemetery, Brown township, Hancock county, Indiana. No stone has been found at Harlan Cemetery for Catharine Coon.153

Richman wrote that a Joseph Coon had a shoe shop in a unplatted town of Sugar Creek township, Hancock county, Indiana called Gem. The town was never surveyed, but it had a post office which "...was maintained until 1902...." Is this him?205
