Henry and Barbara Haas, with three young children and a baby on the way,
emigrated in October 1851 from Wuerttemberg, Germany, The 1900 census
states that Henry Haas, Jr., their son, was born "at sea" in October 1851,
immigrated in 1851, and had lived in the United States for 48 years.10,11,12,5,2,3,6 Their vessel of emigration and
port of entry have not been determined, but it is known that they spent
several years in Pennsylvania before coming to Indiana. Helen Hensley,
granddaughter of Barbara Ellen Haas Wilson, daugher of Henry and Barbara,
stated that her grandmother was born in Philadelphia, which has not yet
been verified. Census records do, however, state that she was born in
Pennsylvania in August 1854.13,14
Henry Haas left a will on 18 August 1894 in Pendleton, Madison
county, Indiana, which was probated on 6 January 1899 in which he states
the maiden name of his beloved wife as Barbara Gankel (which we've got to
love him for), and lists the names of his children as Gothfried Haas,
Johann Haas, Heinrich Haas, Maria Cumins, Barbara Wilson, and Elizabeth
Fischer. It is from this will that we find his full name as Heinrich Jacob
Friedrich Haas, which could help immensely when research is performed in
German records.1

The 1900 census entry of brother Henry shows that Henry Haas, Jr., was born "at sea" in Oct 1851, immigrated in 1851, and has lived in the US for 48 years. This contradicts the 1900 census entry for Godfrey Haas himself, which states that his year of immigration to US was 1853 and years in US was 47.
