Mary Allgood, great-granddaughter of Lorenzo Haas, wrote in an e-mail the following about his emigration from Germany to America.14

Dorothy had Lorenzo out of wedlock. The old newspapers said she was married before, but that is not true. I don't know who his father was, and I guess because of all of this I never will. Dorothy left Germany to come to America and left Lorenzo behind. Lorenzo's school master in Germany helped Lorenzo get passage to come to America when he was 12 to find her. Back then you had to go through England before you could come here. When he was in England he was abducted and held in some sort of factory as slave labor for 2 years. One night there was a heavy fog and he was able to escape. He made his way to the ship yard and talked another German family into saying that he was their son. It worked and he made it over here. He found his mother's house (she was now married to Peter Urick) in Indianapolis and spied on the house for awhile. When he finally knocked on the door, she chased him away and told him to never come back. Later her guilt got to her and she went to him. They made up and ended up in the Pendleton/Lapel area.
.
The 1920 Madison county, Indiana, census gives his immigration year as 1860 and naturalization year as 1912. In 1912, Lorenzo Haas made a petition for naturalization in Madison county, Indiana, on which he states that he was born in "Wurtenberg, Germany" and emigrated to the United States from Stuttgart, Germany on or about the 1 April 1860. On his petition, Lorenzo stated that he arrived at the port of New York in the United States on the vessel Florence Nightingale. This author is currently making the assumption that the date of 1 April 1860 is an estimation of the date Lorenzo arrived in New York, not of the date he left Germany. Verification of these dates can be obtained by checking his application for emigration that he would of made in Wuerttemberg at the age of 12 (presumably with the help of his schoolmaster) and the ship's passenger lists for the Florence Nightingale in April 1860. The latter may be more difficult to trace if he traveled under an assumed name with another family, as is stated in family history. However, there is always a possiblity that when Lorenzo arrived in New York, he used his own name once he left the ship.25,27

Lorenzo Haas left a will on 23 April 1931 in Pendleton, Madison county, Indiana.31
