1. John1 Hollinshead1,2 was born on 6 Jan 1798 in Jersey City, Bergen County, New Jersey. He married Elizabeth Rush, possibly the daughter of Dr. James Rush and Julia Ann (Rush), on 5 Sep 1826 in Ontario, Canada.3,4 (She is identified as the grandniece of Dr. Benjamin Rush in histories as early as 1877.) He died on 18 Mar 1845 in Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois, at age 47. He was buried in the Hollinshead Family Cemetery, Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.
He met Elizabeth Rush in Philadelphia and brought her and her mother, Julia Ann Rush, back to King Township before 1826.5 He was disowned for marrying Elizabeth on 14 May 1829 in Yong Street Quaker Monthly Meeting, King Township, Ontario, Canada.6 He was participant in the rebellion known as the Patriot War, also known as the MacKenzie Rebellion, or the Rebellion of 1837 between 6 Dec 1837 and 1839 in Canada.7,8,9 This “Spirit of Rebellion” from an otherwise Quaker upbringing may have come from the Rush families patriotism, and the willingness to fight for what’s believed in. On the failure of the Rebellion, he immigrated in Jun 1839 to Clyde Township, Whiteside County, Illinois. He relocated in 1840 and came to reside in Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois. He purchased 40 acres for the price of $1.25/acre on 1 Apr 1842 in SWNE 07/ 22-N 4-E, Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.10 He was issued the patent for the purchase of 40 acres of Public Lands at $1.25/acre on 1 May 1843 in SWNE 07/ 22-N 4-E, Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.11
