while participating in aerial flight" on 9 Aug 1965 in Republic of
Vietnam. "When a friendly force was ambushed by the Viet Cong while moving
along a highway, Major Stewart's aircraft immediately proceeded to the scene of
the action and began reporting enemy movements to the friendly ground
commander. After the regular forward air controller developed radio trouble,
Major Stewart assumed the duties of the controller and for over two hours
continuously directed air strikes against the communist forces. With intense
ground fire directed at all of the aircraft one Air Force fighter was disabled
and the pilot was forced to eject over hostile territory. Disregarding personal
safety, Major Stewart and his pilot proceeded to the area in which the downed
pilot had landed and after locating him they continued to circle the area,
though extremely low on fuel, providing protective fire until rescue aircraft
arrived. Major Stewart's professional competence and calm observations while
subjected to heavy insurgent fire contributed significantly to the success of
the ground operation and the saving of an American pilot's life. Major
Stewart's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the
United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military
service;".303 He was commended for his
participation in the Duc Co Victory, along with "all the units of
Operation Dan Thang 7 which caused heavy losses of casualties and weapons of
the enemy highlighting the honor of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces"
Sub-Brigadier General Cao Hao Hon certified that he was worthy of being praised
by the Lieutenant General, Chairman of the National Leadership Committee on 3 Sep
1965 in Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant-Colonel, U.S. Army, 20 Feb 1968.304

He died of a massive coronary, while at work on a new house at Lake Maloney, 7 miles South of North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska. He was 60 years, 11 months & 7 days old. He simply hated doctors andd not had a thorough physical since he had gone to work for Douglas Aircraft, during WWII. Yes, I'd call that stubborn.322,323 He was buried in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, North Platte, Nebraska. Music was his life. Eleanor asked the Musician's Union to provide Pallbearers. Most were lifelong friends.324

He graduated on 29 May 1934 in North Platte, Nebraska, from Voyle graduated from North Platte Senior High School in 1934, 2 years late due to illnesses.327 He registered for the draft on 16 Oct 1940 in North Platte, Nebraska.328
