James Willis1
b. 18 August 1858, d. 26 January 1932
He devoted much of his life as evangelist. He traveled the midwest in his old buckboard wagon. His grandaughter Geraldine Mae Thorne recalls him arriving unannounced one cold night in a blizzard. He would sing and play the piano with much gusto. His grandaughter Dorothy Willis-Giaque, remembers He would be working out in the field & you could see him walking around talking & praying outloud with outstretched hands (holding his Bible) talking to the Lord. This He would do this to practice his sermons. She remembers him getting on his horse to ride off to his weekly meetings. He was really a devout man. Apparently he would get on my grandad Charlie for not raising his kids in a MORE religous fashion. They were raised in a religous manner, but they were just taught to be subtle about it.
He had NO middle name or initial.
In 1900 James was farming near York, NE & in 1931, he moved to Brush, Co. At some point, He & family were in Broken Bow, NE, running an ice cream parlor.
From James Willis' homestead application, No. 17045 (dated 21 July 1888) comes the following info: He moved onto his homestead farm in York County on 19 July 1883. In that same month He had his home constructed by a W.L. Morgan for $900.00. This house was of frame construction, consisting of 4 rooms. The dwelling was 30 feet long, 18 feet wide & 14 feet high. It had a frame barn or stable valued at $100.00. The foregoing home is the house, within which, all of his children would have been born. His mailing address, as well as his voting location, according to this application was Palo, York County, Nebraska. This was merely a post office at the Herman Smith home plus the old church at Palo, that is the burial location of father Benjamin, son John & probably mother Anne Jane Donnelly.
My grandmom, Lillie Willis-Thorne, always gave her place of birth as having been NEAR Palo, York County, Nebraska. The exact legal description of this property is the north 1/2 of the south east 1/4 of section no. 32, township no. 12 north, of range no. 1, west of the 6th P.M. That is my grandmom's precise location of birth!!
According to this homestead application, James Willis' farm implements were as follows: 2 stirring plows, 2 cultivators, 1 harrow mowing machine, self binding? harvester, 1 new wagon, & 1 buggy. His personal property at this time consisted of: 1 organ, 1 bureau, sofa, 3 bed steads & bedding, 2 stoves, 2 tables & 6 chairs.
At the time of this application He had completed 5 crops consisiting corn & oats & currently had a crop consisting of 30 acres of corn with the balance being timothy & clover.
In this application Jim Willis also makes the statement that He had never been in the employ of others.
A Witness to this document, Daniel Heaton, age 70 stated: 'Known him 16 years, lived with his Father in York County & for the last 5 years He has lived on his Homestead--'.1 James Willis and May (Miriam) Amanda Knight were married by H.F. Gilbert, Minister, Marriage License No. 10144 (original document is missing).1 James Willis was born on 18 August 1858 at Coldwater, Mendote, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. Death certificate with Chas Elmer Willis as informant, shows BP as Kingston, Ontario. He was baptized on 19 August 1858 at Mendote Township, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada; He was Baptised in Mendote by Reverend A. Milliken of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Canada. He emigrated from from Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada, leaving 1863. He married May (Miriam) Amanda Knight, daughter of Charles Crooker Knight and Julia Ann Hollinshead, on 24 December 1884 at Clinton County, Iowa.1 James Willis was farming near York in 1900 at Nebraska.1 He relocated to Brush, Morgan County, Colorado, in 1931.1 He died on 26 January 1932 at Brush, Morgan County, Colorado, at age 73 years, 5 months and 8 days. Per death cert cause of death was apoplexy & chronic nephritus (liver). His residence at death was farm 13 miles SE of Brush, CO. He died in Brush, name of hospital was Elivn? (This per death certificate).1 James Willis was buried in Brush, Morgan County, Colorado.
He had NO middle name or initial.
