158. Finley McKinnon⁷ Smock (2654) (David Van Cleave⁶, Samuel V.⁵, Jacob⁴, Jan³, Matthyse Hendrickse², Hendrick Matthyse¹)¹²³ was born on 18 February 1844 in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana. He married Mary Elizabeth Stranahan (2675), daughter of Alexander Stranahan (2676) and Elizabeth Allen (2677), on 31 December 1867 in Signourey, Keokuk County, Iowa. He died on 19 March 1922 in Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa, at age 78; dying of a stroke shortly after his retirement. He was buried in Keota Cemetery, Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa.

He was an apprentice in a wagon shop and was mastering this useful branch of mechanics when the call to arms sounded through the land, calling on all loyal citizens to throw down the implements used in peaceful pursuits, to shoulder a musket in support of our flag and country in 1859. He was described as being five foot nine and half inches tall, dark complexioned, grey eyes, and brown hair in 1861. He began military service in June 1861 enlisting in Company F, Fifth Iowa Infantry volunteers, and serving under Capt. E. S. Sampson and Col. C. L. Matthies in that organization for more than three years. He was badly wounded at Champion Hills, Miss., May 16, 1863, shot through both thighs by a musket ball. In August, 1864, with other members of his company, he was transferred to Company G, Fifth Iowa Cavalry volunteers, under Capt. J. M. Limbocker and Col. W. W. Lowe. He ended military service in August 1865; he finished his service in the war with his participating in Gen. J. H. Wilson's last cavalry raid of the war in Alabama and Georgia, then mustering out of service (with Army Pension Record Certificate No. 112585). He was back again at the wagon shop, becoming a wagon maker between August 1865 and 1877 in Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa. He was elected Deputy Postmaster, and moved his family into the post office building in 1882 in Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa. He was the clerk of the district court of Keokuk county with the republican party between 1894 and 1902. He was secretary for the Firm of Singmaser & Sons, importers of draft horses between 1900 and 1921. He was engaged with a real estate practice after 1902.

Mary Elizabeth Stranahan (2675) was born on 27 April 1844 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was christened on 2 October 1844 in Scots Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She accompanied Alexander Stranahan (2676) when Alexander relocated in 1855 and came to reside in Signourey, Keokuk County, Iowa. He died on 20 July 1889 at age 75; He was taken sick with something like a sunstroke and paralysis, and did not think much of it until taken to his bed, which he never left. He was buried in Belle Vernon Cemetery, Belle Vernon, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; His funeral took place Monday morning at 10 o'clock, and the remains placed in the Bellevernon cemetery. The pallbearers were all grandchildren of the deceased. The last sad rites had been performed, when words similar to the following came to the minds of the mourners and brought relief."Weep not for him who dieth, For he sleeps and is at rest, And the couch whereon he lieth Is the green earth's quiet breast."

His transition from earth to eternity was sudden, and without a struggle his eyes were closed in death and opened to behold the Son of Righteousness in all his glory. He was buried in Belle Vernon Cemetery, Belle Vernon, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

He was the Main Street grocer in 1893 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

ii. Mary (2997) was born in 1836 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

She was taken into her grandmother's, Aunt Polly's, family when she was 11 years old, and remained with her until death separated them, a period of 41 years. In joy or sorrow, in sickness or health, Mary was ever alert in that household, and when her kind old grandmother was worn out by age and affliction, she was the ministering angel that soothed her pains and made soft her pillows until God took her dear one home in 1847. She witnessed the death of Mary Smock (2958) on 6 January 1888 in Belle Vernon, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

iii. Baker (3012) was born after 1836. He died in 1837; Said to have died quite young.

John Matthew⁷ Smock (2989) (John⁶, Abraham⁵, Leonard⁴, Barent³, Leonard Hendrickse², Hendrick Matthyse¹) was born on 24 October 1829 in Greencastle, Fairfield County, Ohio; My source was unsure of county or state. Seeing the family was based in Ohio, and that other Ohio locations are further linked to this group, I will assume Fairfield County, Ohio for this particular Greencastle. He married Mary Virginia Russell (2990), daughter of William Russell (3036) and Catharina Wenner (3037), on 13 March 1858. He died on 13 June 1901 in Shawnee, Allen County, Ohio, at age 71.

He began military service in May 1863 serving in the Army during the Civil War. He ended military service in October 1863; upon which he volunteered with the O.N.G. (Ohio National Guard?) and served four (4) months in the Shenendoah Valley under General Siegle when he was honorably discharged and returned home. He was a farmer before 1872 in Shawnee, Ohio. He was a teamster (teaming at Five Mile Furnace south of Logan, Hocking County and later at XX Furnace, Shawnee, Fairfield County after 1872 in Five Mile Furnace.

Mary Virginia Russell (2990) was born in 1836. She died on 18 March 1895 in Shawnee, Allen County, Ohio.

i. William L.⁸ (3026) was born circa 1860. He died circa 1928.
ii. Elmer Ellsworth (3027) was born in 1861 in Bremen, Fairfield County, Ohio. He married Cora Ellen Davis (3624), daughter of John Davis (3625) and Chloinda Short (3626), on 1 May 1896; by Ephraim Teal. He died in 1922 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.

He and Cora Ellen Davis (3624) had two other children lost in miscarriages, for thirteen children total after 1897.

iii. Sarah Catherine (3028); was born in 1862. She married George A. Wharff (3627) on 24 May 1885; by Reverend W. C. Holliday.
iv. Emma L. (3029); was born in 1864. She married Joseph T. Holliday (3628) on 6 July 1885; by Reverence W. C. Holliday.
v. Harriet V. (3030); was born in 1866. She married Charles E. Galbraith (3629) on 4 May 1890; by C. B. Longman.

207. William⁷ Smock (2191) (Peter⁶, Leonard⁵, Leonard⁴, Barent³, Leonard Hendrickse², Hendrick Matthyse¹)⁸⁹ was born on 9 April 1832. He married Susannah Anderson (2192), daughter of Samuel Anderson (3270), before 1855. He died on 12 March 1904 at age 71.

Susannah Anderson (2192) was born on 27 July 1833. She died in 1914.⁸⁹

208. Cornelius⁷ Boerum (2886) (Abraham⁶, John⁵, Aaron Arie⁴, Johannes³, Sarah Hendrickse²Smock, Hendrick Matthyse¹) was born on 27 March 1843 in Margaretta, Erie County, Ohio. He married Emma Linda Carver (2888) on 24 November 1870 in Wyalusing, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He died on 13 June 1905 in Dorchester, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, at age 62. He was buried in Chesire, New Haven County, Connecticut.

He served in in the Civil War as a Corporal, in Troop L, 2nd Regmt., of the US Cavalry circa 1865.

Emma Linda Carver (2888) was born on 6 November 1850. She died on 10 August 1911 at age 60.
