Text of award reads: "For heroism while participating in aerial flight: Major Stewart distinguished himself by heroic action on 9 August 1965 while serving as an aerial observer in the Republic of Vietnam. When a friendly force was ambushed by the Viet Cong while moving along a highway, Major Stewart's aircraft immediately proceeded to the scene of the action and began reporting enemy movements to the friendly ground commander. After the regular forward air controller developed radio trouble, Major Stewart assumed the duties of the controller and for over two hours continuously directed air strikes against the communist forces. With intense ground fire directed at all of the aircraft one Air Force fighter was disabled and the pilot was forced to eject over hostile territory. Disregarding personal safety, Major Stewart and his pilot proceeded to the area in which the downed pilot had landed and after locating him they continued to circle the area, though extremely low on fuel, providing protective fire until rescue aircraft arrived. Major Stewart's professional competence and calm observations while subjected to heavy insurgent fire contributed significantly to the success of the ground operation and the saving of an American pilot's life. Major Stewart's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service."
