Martin Rice (1839-1924) was the son of John E. Rice and Jane Martin of Muhlenberg and Hopkins Counties KY. Martin married Emma F. Parker (1843-1900), daughter of William B. Parker and Mary Jane Crabtree, in Hopkins County on Nov. 13, 1867. About 1886, Martin and family moved to property on the Tradewater River purchased from the Cullen family (including a sawmill), just outside Providence, near Green Grove Hill.

In October 1900, Emma Parker Rice accidentally drowned in the Tradewater River. Martin and Emma Rice are buried at Big Hill Cemetery, Providence. Children of Martin Rice and Emma Parker:
Ina Rice (1868-1952) buried Big Hill Cemetery, Minnie, Martha E. (Mattie), Nell, Parker, and Chesley .
