The Hearin Hotel was built c. 1890's by William L. Hearin and his wife Permilia Jane Russell Hearin.

Mary Sherwood's father Len Allen stayed there with his grandparents to attend school in Dixon and helped at the hotel after school and on weekends. He later went into the hotel business in Nebraska, but was always proud of his Kentucky roots.
