This tintype photo is Virginia Arabell "Belle" Jones Wiley, who was born
in Dixon, Webster County, KY in 1862. Belle appears to be between ages ten and twelve
in this photo.
Virginia Arabell "Belle" Jones Wiley was the youngest daughter of Wiley Jones and Dorcas Liles. Of Cherokee ancestry, Dorcas' father was John Liles born 1781 in NC and her mother was Dorcas Land born 1782 in SC.
Wiley Jones was the son of Lavinia Sugg and Richard Jones. Richard Jones was of Quaker ancestry and both he and Lavinia's families were from North Carolina.
Belle Jones married her neighbor Edwin A. Wiley when she was thirteen and he was
seventeen. Edwin Wiley was the son of Wilkerson Wiley and Hannah Elizabeth
Trusty-Wiley.
Sadly, Belle died in her 32nd year due to childbirth complications. She left
five young children - Mary, who never married; Tina, Janet's great-grandmother who married Wm.
Lee Shelton, son of Joseph Alexander Shelton, son of Wilson Albert Shelton;
Robert; Floy (a girl); and Dexter. All of the children were taken by their
father, Edwin Wiley, to Dorcas Jones's house in Dixon to be raised by her. Most
or all of the children moved to Indianapolis when they were older as did
Edwin Wiley.

Janet has much of the ancestry of the above families and their descendency and will be happy to share. However, the name(s) of the Cherokee woman who married into these lines aren't known at this time. This Liles line most likely descends from the Indian Trader Liles in Fairfield, Co. SC in 1750.
This project was inspired by the terrific
Sumner County TN Family Album.
