In the late 1850's three families of Ashley's, all related, came to Kentucky from Granville Co. North Carolina in a covered wagon. They arrived in Hopkins County, Kentucky first but were in the 1860 Webster Co. Kentucky census. With them came this old trunk that was handed down through the Arthur Ashley family. The trunk may have belonged to Clarence Ashley and Rebecca Baxter (Arthur's parents). After hearing about the old trunk, Joann Cummings went in search of it and found it not too far from her own home. It is still in excellent shape, but is minus the lining and the leather handles. It has small rollers on the bottom for easy rolling. See the trunk from other angles: open view; back view; side view
The trunk is still in possession of Ashley descendants. Through Arthur Ashley's daughter, Dausie Belle Ashley, who married John Henry Jones, Joann found the trunk at the late Raymond and Gladys Jones's house in Hopkins County Kentucky.
The three families of Ashley's are in the 1860/1870 Webster County Kentucky census. Clarence Ashley's family listing can be read by clicking here
