William Richard Wallace
William Richard Wallace
This photo had been published on a calendar many years ago. Carolyn (Wallace) Chilton, who is the granddaughter of William Richard Wallace has the original photo. She does not know who published it, or when or where, but the calendar had an interesting bio of W.R. Wallace and a description of his uniform. At the end of the bio, it mentions that the fate of Private W.R. Wallace was "unknown". They apparently asked the wrong people, as we know what happened to him after the war. He had a long and prosperous life.

William Richard Wallace was born 4 December 1842 at Clay, KY, the son of James Curry Wallace and Amanda Price. He died 17 January 1927, Pine Grove, Washington County, Arkansas. He married #1 Martha Jane Withers 14 April 1868 Webster County, KY. She was born 22 March 1848, Union County, KY, the daughter of Rev. John Withers and Syrena (Wallace) Withers. There were six children born to this marriage. Martha died 11 February 1886, Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas.

William Richard Wallace married #2 Stella M. Bennett 25 June 1891. She was born 23 May 1865, Tazewell County, Illinois and died 14 September 1937. Two children were born to this marriage.

Click here to read a part of the military record of William Richard Wallace and his father, James Curry Wallace. Unfortunately, his military records are incomplete and the fate of Private Wallace is not known. In this ambrotype, he is pictured wearing a black felt hat and gray, seven-button shell jacket. He is carrying two revolvers in holsters and holds a 36 caliber 1851 Colt Navy or a Confederate manufactured Griswold revolver. His belt plate is a captured U.S. belt plate which he has turned upside-down - a common Confederate practice and sign of disrespect and also formed an "SN" for "Southern Nation."
