DESCRIPTION OF THE BRUTON/BREWTON DNA STUDY |
A group of Bruton/Brewton family researchers is collaborating on this DNA study with four objectives:
• First, we aim to determine if five colonial Carolina Bruton families were related;
• Second, we aim to verify that other early Brutons/Brewtons in the southeastern United States believed to be related to any of the five colonial families are in fact related;
• Third, we aim to assist Bruton/Brewton researchers who have been unable to trace their families back to the colonial era to establish to which, if any, of the early families they relate.
• Fourth, we aim to have Brutons/Brewtons participate whose families lived in other parts of the United States and the world, to establish the migration patterns of the Carolina Bruton families and to identify their European origins. We especially seek the participation of any Bruton descendants from the Bruton families of Gloucestershire in England and of any Bruton families in France.
Broughton researchers should visit the separate Surname Project page for that name and variants (Braughton, Brawton, Brotton, and Broughton).

REQUIREMENTS OF THE BRUTON/BREWTON DNA STUDY |
Since a Surname Project in essence traces members of a family that share a common surname, and females (a) don't carry their father's Y-DNA, and (b) acquire a new surname by the way of marriage, in order to be relevant to the Surname Project, the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his paternal line (father's father's father's...). The test to be ordered is either the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37, and females should look for a brother or cousin with that surname to be tested. Females can also order a test for themselves, which will be the mtDNA or mtDNAPlus, but the results of this test cannot be tied to the Surname Project. If you are female, but wish to be a part of this study, you will need to find the nearest member of your family who is a male Bruton/Brewton. A female can pay for the study, and have the male submit the DNA sample, with the female being the contact person. Only males can be the donors, however a female can be the contact person for that male. Example: Cathy Cranford is the contact person for the dna that her brother submitted for the Cranford DNA study. She paid for the test, the brother swabbed his cheek, gave the sample to Cathy, who sent the test back, and hence became the contact person. She will be the one one who is contacted when there is a match. She is considered the contact person, the brother is a donor. He chose not to be contacted, he does not do family research, and so he was listed "private" for his name as the donor, with Cathy Cranford's name and email address, as the contact person.

TEST COSTS FOR THE BRUTON/BREWTON DNA STUDY |
There are three tests that can be ordered. They are all the same test, but the cost changes with the higher marker listing. The test can be upgraded at any time by sending in additional monies with no need to take the test again. The test results are kept at the FTDNA lab and if wishes to upgrade from a 12 marker test to a 25 or 35 marker, all one needs to do is send in the additional money and request to be upgraded. To do that, click the link below. It is recommended that one take the 25 marker, as the likelihood of matching to other surnames is high and the 25 marker rules this out much better than the 12 marker test. One can however, order the 12 marker test, send in their dna sample, and upgrade later, at any time, to a higher marker test, without the need to send in another sample
