Many thanks goes to Betty Berry for making this page possible! Thank you, Betty! This is not a complete listing of the Rush Cemetery but lists the BRUTON's, POOLE's and SINCLAIR's that are listed. I will be adding the POOLE's and SINCLAIR's later.
Directions to Rush Cemetery, near DeKalb, Kemper Co., Ms
From DeKalb,Ms, take Hwy 39 S for 2-3 miles; turn left on Kipling Road, going abt 2 miles, turn left on Warrentown Rd going abt 1/2 - 1 mile until you see a sign on the left for Rush Cem; take this little winding gravel road on the left into the woods and you will soon come upon a clearing that has a well-kept, fenced-in cemetery among huge old oak trees, complete with an old, ornate and decorative bench for contemplation or conversation. The first time I came upon it, I felt like I was in an enchanted place. It was so quiet, secluded and peaceful. Also, behind it and outside the fence are other gravestones belonging to black people. I suppose it is also called Rush Cemetery. The Rush cemetery for white people is not very large and there are several old markers, but they are all readable. I have only written down or made pictures of the Pooles, Brutons and Sinclair markers and have not developed the Sinclair pictures yet. The last, William S. Bruton, is my 3rd great-grandfather! It was so exciting to find this gravestone because I had no idea he was buried here! He is the son of Jacob Bruton (b. 1792 in Montgomery Co. NC - d. between 1840 - 1846 in Richmond Co, NC - according to Eric) Jacob is the son of Rev. William Bruton and Elizabeth Ozier. William S. Bruton had a son, Charlie Bruton m. Sarah Wells, (I don't have their dates and have not found their graves yet) who was the father of my great-grandmother, Mary Jane "Mollie" Bruton, b. March 4, 1862 d. March 15, 1940, married January 22, 1880 Atlas Franklin Poole, b. January 27, 1851 - d. February 12, 1938.
