Lessons Learned

(Spelling, Pg 5)

*

What were the lessons?  There were two for me.  Your experience may be different.

*

Lesson 1: My Name Didn't Change

The spelling variations did not mean my family's surname, which had been Crossland for hundreds of years, had been changed according to design.  The records clearly do not support such conclusion.

In stead, the variations were merely the Crossland name spelled according to different phonetic spelling practices of various professional scribes of the day (i.e., clerks, ministers, etc.).

The conclusion: My name didn't change.  It was just spelt differently.  I am a Crossland and a Crosslin.  There is no difference!   :+)

Lessons 2: Don't Assume

I must carefully evaluate all potential genealogical records regardless of how the surname is spelled!

Many times in the past, I have had to re-obtain and re-examine records I had otherwise prematurely discarded because the surname spelling had not accorded with my Crosslin spelling expectation.  Not anymore.  I no longer assume that Crosslin is the only spelling applicable to me.

Comment:  If you are aware of documentation that would expand understanding of Crossland spelling variations, expecially use of the Old English long (or leading) "S"  or if you would like to partner with me in developing this page, please contact me here: crosslin@dslextreme.com
