SAMUEL T. BARTLETT, dry goods, drug store and farmer, P. O. Irving; born in Henry County, KY in 1819 [b. Dec. 11, 1818]. He is the second son of a family of eight, born to Samuel and Elizabeth (OWENS) BARTLETT, natives of Virginia. Samuel was born about the year 1777; came to Kentucky when a young man, and settled in Henry County, where he farmed and taught school. In 1833 [1830], he came to Illinois, where he died April 29, 1835. His wife Elizabeth was born about the year 1786 [1785], and died in Illinois in 1858. Subject received his education principally in Illinois in the common schools. In Montgomery County, October 2, 1838 [1836], he married Martha MAXEY, who was born in Warren County [b. Barren Co.], KY about the year 1820 [Dec. 10, 1819]. She is the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (BERRY)[Nancy BARRY] MAXEY . He was a Virginian by birth, removed to Kentucky, then came to Illinois, where he died in 1860 [Nov. 7, 1859]. His wife was a native of Kentucky [Virginia], and also died in Illinois in 1837 [Oct. 20, 1843]. To Mr. and Mrs. BARTLETT have been born nine children, seven now living--John, Charles L., Edward, Henry, Hiram, Douglas [Samuel Douglass] and Mary; George and Jane, deceased.
Note: Samuel T. BARTLETT died Aug. 27, 1893 and Martha died Jan. 20, 1894. Both are buried in Irving Cemetery, Montgomery Co., IL.

CHARLES L. BARTLETT, grocer, Hillsboro, was born in Montgomery County December 20, 1839; son of Samuel T. and Martha (MAXEY) BARTLETT. Samuel T. was born in Henry County, KY in 1818. He removed to Illinois about the year 1835 [1830], and is now living at Irving, where he owns and manages a large farm and a general store. His wife, who is still living, was born near Bowling Green, KY in 1819. Our subject is the second son of a family of seven sons and two daughters. He received his education chiefly at Irving, Ill., and began life as a farmer; but, after being three years in that occupation, he abandoned it and engaged in the mercantile business in Irving, where he remained four years. He left Irving in 1872, and came to Hillsboro, where he has since been engaged in the grocery business. He started in business with but small capital, but by his tact and enterprise, he has built up and is now enjoying a lucrative trade. In Hillsboro, in 1868, he married Emily E. ALLEN, born in Hillsboro in 1839, daughter of William and Mary K. (KILLINGSWORTH) ALLEN, the former born in Tennessee, and died in Hillsboro in 1863; the latter, still living, was also born in Tennessee, in 1812. Mr. and Mrs. BARTLETT are the parents of two children--Charles William and Nellie; Carry Bell, their first child, died in infancy. Mr. BARTLETT has filled the offices of Deputy Sheriff and Jailer of Montgomery County for two years. In politics he is a Democrat. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and the I. O. O. F. They are members of the Presbyterian Church.
Note: In 1890 Charles moved to Joplin, Jasper Co., MO, remaining there until about 1895 when he moved to Jacksonville, Morgan Co., IL. He lived in Jacksonville, owning and operating an ice manufacturing plant until 1907, when he returned to Joplin where he died in 1908.

HARRY L. BARTLETT, manager and part owner of the A. H. BARTLETT Hardware Company of Irving, Ill., is one of the live business men of the county. He was born at Irving, January 4, 1887, a son of H. Rand [Hiram Rountree] and Susan (KEAS) BARTLETT. H. R. BARTLETT was born in Illinois, a son of Samuel [T.] BARTLETT, who came to Montgomery County at an early day and brought his family with him1. Susan KEAS was born at Brighton, Ill., and she and H. R. BARTLETT were married at that place2 and lived in Kentucky for a year, and then moved to Irving, Ill., which has since continued their home. They became the parents of nine children, eight of whom survive, namely: Belle, who is Mrs. D. H. MCCALLUM of Decatur, Ill.; Augusta, who lives at Decatur, Ill.; Arthur H., who lives at Hillsboro, Ill.; Frank S. [Samuel Franklin], who lives at Alton, Ill.; Elmer J. [John Elmer], who lives at Muskogee, Okla.; Harry L.; Earl, who died at the age of fourteen years; Marie, who is Mrs. Elmer CRANE of Decatur, Ill.; and Edna, who is a teacher at Hillsboro.3 The family belongs to the Presbyterian Church. In politics, Mr. BARTLETT is a Democrat.

All of his children were born in Montgomery Co., IL. 2 Susanana "Susie" KEAS and her family moved from Brighton, Macoupin Co., IL to Grayson Springs, Grayson Co., KY when she was a child and she was reared there (her father, Isaac Newton KEAS had been born in KY). She and Hiram married in Grayson Springs and resided there for about a year before returning to Montgomery Co., IL. 3 In 1921 Belle BARTLETT MCCALLUM, Marie BARTLETT CRANE and Edna BARTLETT BOTKIN (wife of Walter BOTKIN) were residing in Decatur, Macon Co., IL; Augusta "Gussie" was in San Antonio, TX; Arthur H. was the County Clerk of Montgomery Co., IL, residing in Hillsboro, and in 1940 was the Postmaster; Harry L. was in Cement, Caddo Co., OK; Frank was in Detroit, MI; and, John Elmer was in Memphis, TN.

ARTHUR HIRAM BARTLETT, county clerk of Montgomery County, residing at Hillsboro, is one of the leading men of this section. He was born at Hillsboro, Ill, December 10, 1878, a son of Hiram and Susie (KEAS/KEYS) BARTLETT, natives of Illinois. Their children were as follows: Belle, who is the wife of Dan MCCALLUM of Decatur, Ill.; Augusta, who lives at Decatur, Ill; Arthur H., who lives at Hillsboro; Frank, who lives at Alton, Ill.; Harry, who lives at Irving, Ill.; John E., who lives at Muskogee, Okla.; Marie, who is the wife of Elmer CRANE of Decatur, Ill.; Earl, who died when about sixteen years old;1 Edna, who is at home; and two who died in infancy.
1Walter Earl died of diabetes Sep. 20, 1903 at age fourteen.
