HANCOCK COUNTY, GA
LAND - TAX RECORDS

LAND LOTTERY

Georgia had a land lottery five different times to encourage settlement of areas newly obtained from the Indians. There were different residency requirements for each lottery, which I won't go into. However, I am sending with this e-mail the BARTLETTs from Hancock Co. who were lucky in certain lotteries:

John BARTLETT from Scotts Militia district in Hanc. Co., Ga. drew lot #171 in section 7 (now Gwinnett Co., Ga.) in the 1820 lottery. He was eligible for 2 draws.

Bennett BARTLETT from the same district and county drew #508 in section 11 which is now Irwin Co., Ga.

Sterling (Starling) BARTLETT got two draws but was not a winner in 1820.

1827 Land Lottery. Sterling BARTLETT won lot #32 in the 9th district of Ga. which is now Troup Co. Ga. (plat available at Ga. archives).

1827 Land Lottery. Campbell BARTLETT was on the July 1825 list enabling him to be elligible for one draw in Captain ALFORD's District #107 in 1827.

In the 1832 Land Lottery, BARTLETTs from Hancock Co. who were eligible to draw included:
Rhoda BARTLETT, 118th district, widow of Revolutionary Soldier ...got 1 draw.
Burwell B. BARTLETT from the 113th district, Hancock Co., was eligible for 1 draw.
William BARTLETT, from the 113th district, Hancock Co., was eligible for 2 draws.

In the 1832 Gold Lottery, BARTLETTs who were eligible to draw from Hancock Co. Ga. included:
Rhoda BARTLETT, widow. - 1 draw.
Sterling BARTLETT, 2 draws. (both 118th district.)
John BARTLETT, Sr. 113th district, Hancock Co., 2 draws.
